Another treasure chest of cable TV programming, this one for do-it-yourselfers fond of home improvement, redecorating, and/or gardening projects, or those who simply enjoy sitting back and watching the travails of others. One of my favorites is 'Sell This House,' in which specialists gently advise desperate housewives without a clue as to why their homes have been on the market for nine months with nary a nibble from prospective buyers. (The reasons usually include garish colors, outdated wallpaper, overwhelming pet odors, ceiling-high debris, deer heads mounted on the master bedroom wall, and/or cracked and faded linoleum on the living room floor.) Another is 'Debbie Travis' Facelift,' wherein the British home-decor diva, whose taste tends to be as good as her accent is delightful, conspires with a homeowner to surprise his or her spouse with a room makeover while the unsuspecting better half is away for a few days. (The time frame in which she has to complete her project is often very narrow, and some of her plans are outrageously ambitious, but only once have I seen Travis and her team fail to finish on time.) Other shows have landscapers or interior designers competing with each other to win the redo job at hand, apartment dwellers revealing their secrets of surviving in claustrophobic spaces, first-time home buyers searching for their dream houses, experts explaining how to turn your trash into someone else's treasure at auction, professionals organizing cluttered closets, and - for those who appreciate history and architecture - a look at renovations that preserved the past while bringing the project into the present. read more
