Stopped here while strolling through Heidelberg.
If I had not stopped at the tourist info center to purchase a map, I would have never known what this tower was.
It can be a little difficult to find as it is not on any road. You can spot it from several different angles, but direct access is a mystery.
We went into the university to see if we could find a path to the inner courtyard to see if we could find it. When we got in there, we couldn't see it, so I found a large double door leading that direction. Upon opening it and looking through I couldn't see the tower...until I stepped out and looked back and up...we had come out of it. There are other entrances to the courtyard, so try to use them instead.
This is a tower from the middle ages that was used to lock up thieves and such. Women were also held here, though it has not been proved (based on what I've read) that witches were actually held here.
It's interesting to see and even more fun to discover. With everything else in Heidelberg, this is not a "must-see"...but if in the general area, why not? read more
