You can't tell from the outside, but Het Natuurhuis is huge! You walk in and first see the baked goods and cheese area, then you discover aisles filled with tea, coffee, spreads, honey, sauces, grains, cereals, etc. Then to the back left, you have the cold area with all of the fruits and vegetables. I think I echo everyone's sentiments about loving the nuts and grains setup where you can buy by the gram. I love leaving with a lot of small bags filled with different nuts, oats, and dried fruit. Often for breakfast I like to eat granola and Het Natuurhuis's offering makes it easy to try out different combinations without having to always invest in huge portions at a time.
There are a few things I always buy at Het Natuurhuis:
- Black beans!! In America we eat a lot of Mexican and Hispanic food and it took me a while to find a place where I could buy them.
- Corn flour and meal - if you want to make corn tortillas or cornbread (I'm a Georgia girl after all)
- Quinoa (not just in normal form, but also pasta, flakes, and flour), buckwheat, oats, and other grains
- Dried fruit (if you buy dried fruit like dates, figs or cranberries in other supermarkets they're covered in syrup and way too sweet)
- Tea and Coffee (HUGE selection of tea)
- Coconut Oil (I love cooking with this healthy oil but don't always want my food to taste like coconut; at Natuurhuis they sell both regular and unscented; I keep both in my kitchen)
- And of course super foods!
The prices are a bit higher than other supermarkets, but that's to be expected because most products are local and all are organic.
My only complaint would be the hours. Most supermarkets are open until 20:00 in the evening, but Het Natuurhuis closes at 18:30, so I only have the chance to shop here on my day off. read more
