As with Italian restaurants, Formby is hardly spoilt for choice when it comes to Indian restaurants, with there being two in the village itself even discounting the nearby Shanti restaurant. However, I recently visited here for a meal as an alternative to going to the Balti House and was pleased with the quality of the food that we had. Zyka boasts an award-winning chef that creates signature dishes unique to the restaurant itself and this is reflected in their food, which is both spicy and full of flavour. When I went I ordered the 'Special Murgh Bahar', which was chicken breast stuffed with mince lamb to create a dish that was interestingly diverse and very tasty, which I would highly recommend. The price of a meal can add up with all the extras (as most good Indians do) but if you're looking for an alternative to the Balti House whilst remaining in the immediate village area, Zyka is an excellent place to visit.

Now that I have firmly established myself as one of the leading sphisticates of the modern age, let me tell you that despite the terrible decor of this place, it is a pretty damn fine Indian restaurant. Given the opportunity to go out for a meal, my father would come here 8 of 10 ten times - the other 2 would probably be one of the Greek tavernas in town, very blokey choices I must say! However I don't find sitting in here all that pleasant as it's a bit neony - I know it's not a word but it aptly describes the 80's wine bar vibe of blue and green strip lighting throughout the place. But the food tastes freshly prepared and is full of flavour not just hot and spicy.

Saffron is one such restaurant that I have visited in the past and continue to visit on a fairly regular basis (regular considering that it's a fifteen minute train journey to go for an Indian meal which I could easily get on my doorstep). That I choose to return to Saffron shows its quality as a restaurant and every time I have been there I have been impressed with both the range of dishes on offer and the quality of each dish I have tried. Their food is rich and full of flavour whilst still maintaining a good level of spice and they do cater for those individuals looking for something a bit milder as well. The price of some meals can be a bit expensive but are still fairly competitive for the area, and the staff are always on hand with a helping hand and friendly disposition. The restaurant is fairly spacious and bright, offering a lovely dining atmosphere in which to enjoy your meal. Saffron also has a range of special offers, including an early bird special between 5pm and 7pm, a lunch-time special between 12pm and 3pm, and a Sunday afternoon buffet; all of which represent excellent value for money.

Oh yeah, and a pint of Tiger or Kingfisher or some other great Indian beer. Unfortunately, despite the tall claim of serving Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi food, the place is far from serving any of these cuisines, inadvertently misleading it's customers. Butter chicken, which happens to be one of the commonest and best known dishes from that part of the World, has been given such a twist that if it could, it would beg the chef to not name it butter chicken. The staff is most complacent and condescending to your woes and concerns. Despite being thoroughly let down by our main course dishes including Tadka dal, the only saving grace was the beautifully done butter naan which was crisp, sumptuous and huge. My one star is for that.
