Hess replaced our HW heater due to a leak in Sept 2024. They never filed a permit and nothing on our paperwork said anything about one. Then we had our HVAC system replaced Feb. 2025, by another contractor since Hess quoted almost $16,000 and the other contractor charged us $9600. And the HVAC contractor paid for the permits. When the township came out to inspect the HVAC he saw the HW heater was not permitted. I called Hess and told them they had to file. I got a msg. back from them saying they would file but we had to pick it up and pay for it. I told them I would not pay. The owner, Jack Hess said then don't. He was rude and sarcastic. He said they don't pay for permits. I told him nothing was written about that on the proposal or invoice. He did not care. Turns out we had to pay since if the contractor does not pay the homeowner will be fined $2000 per day by the township. Don't use Hess. Since they don't pay for permits that means they don't back up their work. read more

We had an appointment with them but decided to cancel. They showed up the next day, claiming we didn't cancel and demanded some money. Even though my husband showed him the phone log proving that he called the night prior. They stated they were supposedly never called. They never even called ahead to give a heads up they were coming out (even though cancelled). Don't hire these people - all they care about is there money and will show up demanding it even if you cancel. Ridiculous!!! read more

Do NOT contact Hess. I own a property in Brigantine and contacted Hess for a clogged, unflushable toilet after I was referred by another plumbing company. Worst mistake I've made as a homeowner. They showed up on a Friday, almost 30 minutes past the two-hour window initially given. $380 later, Mr. Hess claimed they fixed the clog, claimed they snaked the drain, tried to upsell me $200 on a camera to see the clog, told me after they "fixed" the clog that it was just paper and I wouldn't have needed the camera anyway. Within five days (Wednesday), the toilet would not flush again. I called Mr. Hess to find out if they would come back to fix the job once and for all - he informed me that his company's work is not guaranteed and it would be another $300 to unclog the toilet again. He offered the camera service for free this time (lol). Why would I shell out another $300 to a company that clearly did not finish the job in the first place?!?! I suggested to Mr. Hess that the job was not done correctly the first time around. He was extremely rude and condescending and said that he's "been doing this since before I was born" and "there was no warranty offered." I may not be a plumber or know how to fix toilets, but I have a Masters degree in communication and I know that this is not how you speak to clients, nor is this a proper way to run a business. Not even a week had passed since I was charged nearly $380 by Hess for essentially nothing besides three hours of my time wasted after sitting around waiting for them to show up. If you can't guarantee your work within one week of service, you are clearly not in business to stay in business. The silver lining: I called Barron Plumbing in AC - they came the next day and fixed the toilet and ran the camera for what I would've paid Hess the second time around. Barron's even contacted the gas company on my behalf to fix the pipe that was damaged by their work. Save your money, time and frustration - DO NOT CONTACT HESS. They will overcharge you and speak to you as if you're the idiot - although I beg to differ. read more

I found this family business online. I called them to clean my sewer lines and they did. After 2 or 3 weeks later my sewer lines clogged again I called them to check it out again. Without even going to my home he gave me estimate for $2500 to fix. Another bad part is that he called my tenant and told him that I'm not fixing his sewer lines. I'm looking for handyman to fix. I was initially impressed when i called Hess Plumbing on a Friday and they were able to come the next day (said there was no extra charge for Sat service) to service a "clogged kitchen drain". The owners son came, snaked the drain and 1/2hr-40 min later I paid $280 (that included the $30 online discount coupon) to clear the drain. Later that evening i noticed some water laying in the drain and by the next evening the drain was clogged and my sink was filled with water. Same exact symptoms as the original service call I called Hess Plumbing first thing on Mon AM and scheduled a follow up appt I was told that if they come and find a different cause, there would be an additional charge. The follow up visit was diagnosed as "food stuck in the garbage disposal" at an additional charge of $116 When I called and spoke directly with Mr Hess, the owner I told him i did not feel i should be charged the additional fee and that his son did not thoroughly diagnose the problem on Sat .... Mr Hess could have cared less and he was argumentative and rude ! I would not recommend this company at all ! read more

The gas company that I have a service contract with failed to fix my heater two times in the same cold-cold week. When it broke for a third time that same week, I called Hess Plumbing & Drain Cleaning. They came out right away (vs. waiting 5 days without heat like the gas company), gave me a fair price and most importantly, FIXED IT!!!! I have since cancelled my service contract with the gas company and from now on will call on Hess Plumbing for any needs in the future. read more

I called to have toilet unclogged, office personnel very nice and Jack could come out right away. He saw toilet paper in toilet and said probably just a bowl clog $179 repeated this a few times. He used plunger a few times said it was ok. We unged it out ourselves before he came!!! Two minutes after he left clogged again! Summery: kept repeating $179 its gonna cost 179 if I have to take the toilet off it'll be double. Wth I can take the toilet off myself. Anyway I've been told his prices are much to high. If you want to be treated with NO respect &like an idiot... this is your company. AWFUL SERVICE WITH NO REGARD FOR THE CUSTOMER. They tech that showed up to my house was an unprofessional rude asshole. I called specifically for an estimate for a toilet repair & define where a leak is coming from in a 2nd bath. His less than 5 min assessment was to replace both at the exorbitant cost of $625 each. When my boyfriend called and asked to speak with the tech he felt he couldn't be bothered to explain and basically hung up on him. I tried to explain I need a gasket on the one toilet and he really didn't provide a resolution for the leak. To which he replied, If I wanted to know where the leak was coming from he'll have to replace the toilet anyway or go through my neighbors downstairs unit and cut a hole in the ceiling. Really???! I was so uncomfortable and disgusted with how I was treated I paid the $90 service fee just to get this jerk out of my house. After taking the day off work, I took matters in my own hands, googled a YouTube video fixed the gasket myself for $12 and the leak for $8.99 (flapper). Buyer beware!!! After the fact, I thought about why did I pay almost $100 for nothing? I called to speak to the only sane person at this company (the receptionist) to explain the situation and see if they would return my money as a courtesy for my awful experience. Owner finally calls over a week later from vacation and starts off with an attitude that I'm trying to blackmail him because I mentioned its shame I had this experience since I was referred by a family friend. I told him I would refrain from a bad review if we can resolve things amicably, but he had same lousy attitude as the tech!!!! Name calling me "oh, you're one of those". No wonder your online review is sub par in low 4s because you're a greedy,lazy owner. I don't expect work for free but when your "solution" is to simply replace something in lieu of diagnosing an issue you're a joke and a crook to boot to charge $500 in labor... thats obscene. Poor workmanship on the replacement of my sewer line by Hess caused $1,000 in damage to my concrete walkway and adjacent asphalt driveway. The walkway settled several inches causing the driveway to buckle becsuse they tunneled under the walkway instead of cutting away the concrete. A pile of dirt was left in front of my house that should have been used as backfill had they cut away the concrete. Hess did not return my calls after I got the final estimate for the repairs. A complaint was filed with the Better Business Bureau and Hess ignored the complaint. A complaint was then filed with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. read more

Woke up at 6AM to a bit of water on my kitchen floor. Got a wrench to tighten the pipes under the sink and the pipes peeled away like aluminum foil. I called them around 6:30AM and was answered within an hour and they offered to be here in as soon as 8AM. I asked that they come later but was happy to know they could accommodate. Turns out not only were the pipes bad but the garbage disposal was cracked as well. Had a 3/4 HP disposal under the sink, but they explained it really wasn't necessary and put in a 1/2 HP disposal. They could have easily sold me something more expensive and unnecessary (as it would appear the previous contractor did). Whole job was done by mid-afternoon. Reasonable price for the turnaround, parts, and labor. Glad I found them. Would call again and would definitely recommend! read more

We called Hess and they were very professional. We received a return call the same day advising when someone would be coming over to help with our sump pump. Mike came over and gave me his business card. He was very pleasant, informative and advised what needed to be done regarding my sump pump. I called and spoke with Jackson (the owner) about reviewing the leak in my upstairs bathrooms. I also had a toilet that was running and needed possible repair. Jackson sent his son to review the issues we had discussed, his son would look at various parts of the bathroom and call his father to describe what he saw and then repeat what his father said. His descriptions were literally 'theres a leak and I don't know where it's coming from, I can't tell' Any question I would ask would be answered with "I don't know I have to ask my Dad" He was able to tell me that his Dad said the toilet needed to be replaced but his answer to the leaking tub and shower was that maybe it was the shower curtain that needed to be replaced. It was clear to myself and the tenants that the leaking was seeping from beneath the tub onto the floor (and the stand up shower doesn't even have a shower curtain) and when I realized that Jack, the son did not know what he was doing or what he was looking for I called his father who was upset that I even called him and said "well haven't you ever seen water come on the floor from a shower curtain? That's a completely logical diagnosis, I don't understand your problem." I described to him where the leak was coming from and never once did he offer to come and look himself. I was disgusted at the lack of professionalism, faulty diagnosis of the problem, and lack of effort on his part to represent his company in a better manner. I was upset and called the front desk and legitimately took it out on the front desk lady who was offended and I apologized to her, I can admit when I'm wrong and the reality is that I was upset about getting hussled for $100, it was foolish and disrespectful to have a professional send his son who doesn't know plumbing or how to assess a bathroom come out and say I need a new shower curtain when several adults can clearly see that the leak was well beyond a shower curtain. I paid the $94.00 assessment fee (for literally telling me that maybe it was the shower curtain that wasn't containing the water) and felt relieved that at least it only cost $94 to get this scam artist away from my home. I felt obliged to warn others to avoid such bad and unprofessional service. read more
