Hertz Car Rental - Lisbon Airport (Portugal) THIS LOCATION IS A TOURIST TRAP. I BELIEVE THIS IS INTENTIONAL. DO NOT RENT HERE. I reserved a car online in advance with UNLIMITED MILEAGE clearly stated. When I arrived at the Lisbon Airport counter, I was told they "only had two cars available." I was under extreme stress because my husband was very ill, and I needed to get on the road quickly in a foreign country. Only afterward did I discover they added a €600 "upgrade" charge without clearly informing me or asking for my consent. This was not explained at the counter. It was simply added. Then came another shock: €429 charged for time and mileage, even though my reservation was explicitly UNLIMITED MILEAGE. This was not a misunderstanding. This was not poor communication. I believe this is intentional. The setup feels designed to take advantage of exhausted, stressed, and vulnerable travelers -- especially tourists who trust a major brand and don't realize what is being slipped into the contract at the counter. When I disputed the charges with Hertz corporate, I was told they could do nothing because this location is "independently owned." The local office refused a refund and hid behind "you signed the contract," despite failing to clearly explain the charges in the first place. This location uses the Hertz name to operate what feels like a predatory tourist trap at an international airport. Protect yourself. Rent from ANY other company at Lisbon Airport. read more

SCAM ALERT - please read Hertz doesn't have their location at the airport listed on Yelp, so I have to use this one. Hertz had our PREPAID reservation for more than 3 months before our trip. When we arrived, exhausted from the overnight trip, they told us that the car that we had reserved and paid for was not available. The only option was to upgrade to a "larger" car or cancel the reservation. We took the larger car at an additional cost of more than $600. When we went into the lot to get our car, they had several dozen of the car we had previously reserved, which was actually larger. When we complained, they said that those weren't available and we had already signed for the upgrade. Too bad. We tried complaining to Hertz, but they said that the location is a franchise location and that they have no control -- even though we made the reservation through Hertz. We tried to contest it through Chase as a fraudulent business practice, but with the signed (coerced) contract, they wouldn't do anything about it. Our only recourse would be to call Hertz in Portugal. We have tried calling and the person answering only says that a manager isn't available and that they would call us back. 3 tries. Never called back. Here is a picture of the car we prepaid (right) and the car they "upgraded" us to. BE WARNED - they have mastered this tourist scam. You will arrive tired and be lied to with no recourse. read more

Scam Alert This is a review for the airport rental location. While it says Hertz, it's a franchisee and and parent company takes no responsibility for anything that happens here, and only directs you to contact Portugal Hertz which is just a waste of time. We dropped off afterhours, and were told a couple of days later that: 1) we had used the wrong gasoline and the car would not start. Despite the fact that we drove the car to the airport with no issues. So they charged us for emptying out the tank and replacing. 2) we had returned the car with empty tank, which was not true, given #1. So they charged us for that as well. As per other comments, this agency acts fraudulently, and it's impossible to deal with them when no longer there. And Hertz takes no responsibility for their actions. So much for us trying to rent from a reputable known name. read more

Don't rent from here!!! Go to others at the airport like National (My friend rented and it was smooth and quick) I have 2 major complaints for the Lisbon city location. 1 - Despite reserving an SUV ahead of time, the car was not ready and the salesperson force a sedan which is at a lower price range. She lied and said that it is the same level as the SUV claiming that it is the engine size that matters. She refuse to let us rent the car that is in the lot and told us to return 1.5 hour later which by that tome we went back and forth is 3 hours from my reservation time. 2 - The sales person pushed insurance on us even though we kept refusing. Then, she pretended she didn't understand our question and claimed that she has to put a hold of 40,000 euros on put credit card if we don't purchase insurance. It turned out that it was only1000 euros for the hold. Overall, it was an extremely upsetting experience. It was horrible to have to deal with this during vacation. Because we wanted an automatic, we had to get a bmw. I had expected something nice, but it's an very old model that is all scratched up. read more
The staff here is pretty nice. They are supposed to close at 6pm but as we got lost finding our hotel (Yelp's map was way off on that but that's another story) and we had a hard time finding gas station (turned out we missed them because, honestly, the smallest drive-through in U.S. is bigger than the two-pump gas stations at the side of the street - nothing disrespectful, just that we didn't have the correct picture in mind of what to look for.) When we pulled in at 6:03, the guy was walking out of the door but he was kind enough to return to his office so we could return the car without paying an extra day's rent. On the other hand, the car we got had so much scratch and dent on it, it's the worst rental we ever got. Even the plastic seal on the window looked warped like someone tried to open the door with a hanger. The staff tried her best to mark everything on the form (though we pointed our a few more), and did send the car back for a wash when we requested, but when we paid more to rent from Hertz, a trusted name from the U.S., instead of some local rental companies, we have higher expectations. BTW the office has outlets for different countries so should you need to a quick charge and don't have the right electrical plug, this may be useful. read more

Worst experience I've ever had with a rental car company. Poor customer service, misinformation on the battery capacity of the electric car that they recommended to us, electric car only 1/3 charged at the time of pick-up, to not having an electric charge card in the vehicle (that was promised). Instead of having a relaxing 3 1/2-hour drive from Lisboa to Porto, we spent an additional 3-hours trying to figure our how to utilize various on-line apps in order to charge, as well as having to stop twice in order to charge the car. We had to deviate from our travel plans and wasted our entire day. read more

Imagine if a refugee camp and a US post office joined forces share customer service practices, and you'd be better off than this Hertz location, which can best be described as a total black hole. We arrived to what appeared to be a Greyhound Bus-like waiting room of sad souls camped out on luggage, women rocking crying babies, men mindlessly staring into space -- unbeknownst to us, all having processed the situation hours before we arrived and moving through phases of grief, from disbelief to frustration to utter hopelessness. Take a number -- but don't be fooled! That number does not indicate an actual organized process. Ideally, in about 45 minutes, you enter Phase 1 of the rental experience, during which someone who starts every morning eagerly anticipating her lunch break spends 20 minutes pecking letters into the "system." Then, the ultimate question you never want to hear: Furrowed brow, followed by, "Do you have a confirmation number?" Eventually, a manager comes over to rectify the confusion. Type type type. Type type type. Breakthrough! With any luck, you've avoided the up-sell to a more expensive rental and (jackpot!) they ACTUALLY have your car! Proceed to Phase 2. Walk down to the garage, where a lone worker with a clipboard and a safety vest is darting around in a way that implies he's getting things done. Not the case. Take a deep breath -- you have at least another 20 minutes to wait before you flag someone down to help you find your vehicle. (I recommend putting at least three guys on the job for this -- eventually, one will do something.) In our case, we got to wait even longer because the car we reserved had a flat tire, a fact they waited to address until the very moment we were standing in the garage. You know those situations, like when you're on a painfully crowded public bus smashed between unwashed vagrants, shrieking toddlers, and morbidly obese tourists in Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts, and you just have to literally disconnect from your body, mentally, and go into a new level of consciousness? So you close your eyes, slow your breathing and create the sensation of an imaginary forcefield around your body, focusing all of your thoughts on a calming white light somewhere high above the earth? Bring those skills to this Hertz rental car office in Lisbon. You're going to need them. OK, now, finally Phase 3... car arrives. Clipboard guy scours every square inch of the car, taking a full autopsy for any indication of damage. It's now clear that there IS an "Attention to Detail" training module here, and the entire focus is on this specific Phase of the Hertz rental experience. When he's finally finished, you're required to sign more paperwork and give your email address and phone number (fourth time's the charm, folks) before you can finally get the hell out of there. All in, you've lost a minimum of 3 hours of your life you will never get back. On the upside, the rush of the escape does give you a "new lease on life" feeling -- sorta like scaling one of the Seven Summits of the world -- where you realize, "Wow, if I can get through this, I can get through ANYTHING." It was a false positive for us, however. My boyfriend was so fed up by the end of it that he peeled out of there and left his wallet and passport. When he called to retrieve them, he couldn't get a person because -- of course -- it's lunch time! Off the clock! He drove 45 minutes back to find someone to talk with and had to bang on the windows to get someone to put down a sandwich. Wallet retrieved, yet his cash was stolen. Nice touch, team. Now that we are home safe and have been able to reflect on the situation, we keep telling each other that what doesn't destroy you makes you stronger. And we give Hertz Lisbon a lot of credit for testing the limits of our relationship in ways we never thought possible. So, for that we are grateful. At least we have our health, and we have each other. read more

If you want to wait for an extremely long period of time (when renting AND returning the car), if you want to receive a crashed car that looks like it came from a demolition derby (with no discount or even mention that the car you are receiving used to be square but now has rounded edges) if you want to deal with an extremely rude staff that moves around and helps you as quickly as a doped up tortoise, then this is the place for you! read more

This place, especially their manager Monica, wasted a half a day of our vacation. She claimed that we reserved a car with zero miles, that we problem was that our reservation was done 4 months in advance and there is nothing she could do besides increase our reservation price by 50%. She refused to look up if we can change our reservation at the airport and suggested we take s train to our destination in he south of Portugal, where we can get a rental car locally. She proceeded to inform us that she will help us to cancel our current reservation and will make another one. We went to a train station on the other side of the metro line only to find out that there are no direct trains to our destination, ever!!! My husband, who is Gold Hertz member, finally had enough of this "help" and made a new reservation including miles at Hertz Lisbon Airport for the original price!! Then, we had to cross Lisbon yet again to get to the airport where we were helped seamlessly! What s contrast! I will never go to the downtown Hertz! I wish I knew why we were forced to waste so much time! read more

Absolutely avoid using Hertz in Lisbon. I rented here based on my Gold status and getting a good rate. I literally waited 90 minutes just to get my car! A jam packed waiting room of customers waited along with me. Meanwhile, it seemed that only two people were working the rental desk. After waiting one hour, I finally made it to the desk and was completing the paperwork when the person who was helping me said he had to check on something and left. He was gone for at least ten minutes! When he came back I asked him if everything was okay and he said yes, and just continued processing my paperwork like nothing had happened. When I asked him where he had gone, he said he was checking on my car. After the paperwork was completed, I had to wait another 30 minutes to get my car! Just before my car was turned over to me (and as I stood ten feet away with my luggage) a female employee of Hertz rammed the back passenger side of another car into the front driver side of my car. The female got out of the car, looked at the damage, and I never saw her again. A male attendant took pictures of the damage to my car and then handed me the keys telling me not worry about the damage because I would not be charged for it. (I have pictures to prove all of this.) I told him that I wanted another car and he seemed perplexed by this; he later came back and said they would have to see if there was one in my class that was available. I asked how long this would take and he said didn't know. The manager then spoke to me and told me that it might take some time to figure out what car to give me and to switch over my contract. He encouraged me to take the damaged car and pointed out that I had all the pictures to prove I had not caused any of the damage (including ones of him surveying the damage). Another customer waiting nearby said I'll take it if she won't. I literally just had to laugh at that point. Not wanting to spend another hour-plus at this place, I took the car. Usually I rent with Sixt in Europe but this time I used Hertz because of my Gold status (whatever that means to them) and to save a few euros. Never again. read more

Waiting time is horrendous. There are several car rental companies served by the same counters and it feels like the antechamber to hell. We spent more than 2 hours waiting for the car. Without the roaming charges being dropped in Europe, I would have had time to read the 1st volume of War and Peace (in Russian that I do not speak). Highly unrecommended!! read more

The staff is friendly but the lines are long. The gold plus rewards lane is unmanned so despite the privileged status, one must wait.

I was concerned about renting from this location based on other reviews. However, my experience was great. The night before the pickup date, I received an email showing my car (which certainly was a great relief). I picked up the car around 845am on a Tuesday and simply had to give my name and driver license. The car was waiting for me and the whole process took only minutes -- I did discover a chip in the windshield, so Ihad its picture taken. I returned the car at another location so cannot comment on that. read more

Fantastic people. Excellent customer service. It is clear with these people that customer service is the number one priority. Will only rent from hertz, had nothing but good experiences with them. This place holds the standards high. read more

I had two rentals at Hertz and one at Thrifty (which is just a subsidiary from Hertz and even the same counter at LISBOA airport). Each time the cars were not what I booked, "similar" means obviously just the external dimension and nothing else. Once I received an "upgrade", as the booked category was not available, and this caused nearly double the tolls, which is a remarkable amount on the Portuguese highways. Hertz agreed during negotiating this issue on the phone to take over the additional costs, but later nothing was true any more, it was suddenly even claimed, the upgrade would not have been an upgrade (the upgrade was a 4-wheel drive Jeep instead of a BMW1, which I indeed would have preferred), but the booked class, which is definitely not true and had also been confirmed on the phone to be an upgrade. The last car was extremely dirty, even with greasy windshield and instrument panel. The complaint department was answering my complaint completely inapropriately with a standard letter. This was my last booking at Hertz! read more

We had a great experience at the downtown Lisbon Hertz location. It's centrally located making it not only easy to get to, but easy to get out of the city as well. The representative that assisted us (I wish I'd gotten his name) was efficient and extremely helpful, pointing out some interesting stops along our planned route: Lisbon- Setubal-Lagos-Evora-Lisbon. Driving in Portugal was a breeze. I highly recommend getting the optional WiFi and the toll transponder. read more
