I had a terrible experience with Hertz. The staff was rude from the start, and they tried to claim we didn't fill the gas tank--even though we filled it twice and had the receipts to prove it. Instead of helping, they acted like we were the ones causing problems. On top of that, I left something in the car, and when I went back to get it, the employee named Angel was extremely unhelpful and refused to return it or even look into it properly. The lack of professionalism and accountability was honestly shocking. I won't be renting from Hertz again, and I definitely wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Buyer Beware! Our Hertz rental cost us $1,000 more than quoted We went to pick up our car on 12/20/23, at the Hertz Airport location. We were told there was no vehicle for us at the quoted price. We had printed materials showing the quote. After 90 minutes of haggling with managers, they offered us a car at $1,000 more than the quote. First time rented Hertz and reservations were paid for in the U.S. we got to Merida and we were told the security deposit on credit card $10.000. And they charged us all kinds of extra. We walked out and went back home to get refunded. the fellow was super rude and should be supervised or fired. Today rented from Thrifty. We did not know that Hertz's and Dollar car and thrifty were all the same window at the Merida, Yucatan airport. We could not find a phone number online to call to tell Thrifty our flight was delayed. My aunt got to the airport and spoke with the same person we got when we tried to rent from Hertz the last time. She was there also. Short, large fellow and pudgy. She approached the fellow at the booth and told them we were delayed and he told them not to worry. As they were in the waiting area the fellow walked out with his backpack and left the airport 5 minutes later. She tried to call to him and he ignored here. There were no signs of a Thrifty booth or for help or anyone at the Dollar car booth for help or direction! Someone has to look into this. We got two reservation months before the trip. When we arrived the two workers that were helping us decided to have a meeting behind closed doors when they reappeared they informed us they did not have the vehicle anymore and now they only had vehicle that were triple the price of what we had reserved them for. We said that wasn't what was agreed upon and they said well good luck finding what you want at the price you got you're here during busy season. They will try and hustle you. Beware you will be required to purchase their insurance at the counter before you can pick up a car. This same company offers Hertz, Avasa, Dollar, Thrifty, and Firefly car rentals. Prices for coverage are posted using a laminated flyer available for your review ONLY at the counter, so you can't even shop around ahead of time. Cheapest is $70USD/day for lowest coverage. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT insurance from your credit card (Amex, CSR, etc. which is what I usually use and have never had a problem getting accepted). Furthermore they want you to pay w a debit card otherwise you incur additional charges when paying them w a credit card. Booked and confirmed reservation for our rental fully online. I am told at the counter the insurance coverage offered online would not have been accepted anyway. Basically, YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF YOUR AS* AT THE COUNTER. We ended up abandoning the reservation in favor of a smaller local company recommended by a contact. Surprise, surprise: the same exact reservation came out cheaper than the total cost of Hertz insurance alone. BTW, calling Hertz is useless. Their best advice was to ask at the counter for them to place a note on the reservation to refund the insurance costs later. Not a snowball's chance in hell that's happening. Also witnessed three other parties go through the same dispute at the counter. Two caved. One of these did not receive the vehicle they'd reserved; they got manual instead of automatic. Then they did not respect my prepaid reservation even because in their system it was shown as 6am, when my confirmation clearly stated 6pm. If I wanted the same car I would have to pay 3 times the original prepaid price AND they would not apply the balance I had already paid. I had to request the full refund. One star is being too generous with HERTZ Mexico in Merida. I am a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member and had never received such low level of service. I made a reservation on Hertzmexico.com for a one-day rental, which Avasa, the Hertz licensee confirmed both at their website and by email. However, when I went to pick up the vehicle at the Fiesta Americana hotel the attendant told me flat out that there were no cars available either there or at the airport, and that there was a long wait list for that day. She offered no solution except that she could cancel the reservation. She also said that the overbooking of cars is a recurrent problem at this office because Avasa's website will make all reservations people request, regardless of whether of not there are cars available. After reading other people's comments regarding their experience with Hertz Mexico throughout the years I wonder how it is that Hertz has not terminated its association with this extremely deficient franchisee who is only dragging down the company's reputation. Hertz car rental in Merida's airport has the worst customer service and is nowhere near the quality of Hertz in the USA. I rented a car online and fully paid for it, when I showed up to pick up our rental we were received with agents fighting over not taking care of us. I wish I would have looked at the reviews before making this reservation. Save yourself the headache and do not use this company! I made my reservation for a total of $45.00 US Dollars. As normal they tried to up-sell me on insurance packages making my total $340/$400 something dollars. I denied their insurance options knowing that my insurance covers me. So then they wanted a $900.00 deposit. A $900.00 dollar deposit?! I could buy a car in Mexico for that ($16,200 Mexican Dollars). It was late so I ended up just ubering to my hotel and around Merida and everything was fine. The Taxi's are cheap, Uber is handy and it is a tourist city. Your hotel probably has shuttle connections and you wont need a car. Side note. They only have a counter at the airport. A shuttle will come and get you and take you across the street where their location really is. read more

We charge you for the service, I was like awesome. Car they gave us didn't have power steering. Hub caps where with tie wraps which one few off with the storm this weekend. Brought the car back 3/4 of a tank and they still charge us extras. Another charge was made because the mat had sand. My rental was $200 pesos daily used it 2 days and I end up paying $535 u.s. that's insane I do not recommend this at all read more

Got to the airport and they did not honor our reservation made thru American Express since I hadn't paid upfront. Told us we were on a waitlist and to go to the Hertz in downtown Centro at 5pm the next day. They close at 5pm!!! Apparently rental cars are in shortage during the winter season and this is a well known fact to most everyone there. If you don't pay up front theres a good chance you'll get screwed over. My story is practically the same as the rest of the reviews here. Costumer service is abysmal... even before you get there! I called in advance to confirm the availability of the Suburban I had reserved, note I was doing this on the morning of the day I was scheduled to arrive. My flight was delayed and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be released if I did not show up on time. Well, no matter how I tried to get the agent to agree to place a hold on the vehicle for ONE MORE HOUR all I got for an answer was "All rentals are subject to availability". I wonder then, WHAT'S THE POINT OF MAKING A RESERVATION!!?? Once at the office I was told BUYING their INSURANCE was COMPULSORY. All Major credit card companies usually will cover this item for their members, but the people at HERTZ were not having it. Additionally, I was not shown a rate sheet for insurance or currency exchange nor was I given alternative vehicle options. The INSURANCE rate came to OVER $100 us dlls A DAY. Assessing your options is something they make extremely difficult at this company and ripping customers off seems systematic. As if that wasn't enough, my party of seven HAD TO WAIT out on the curb in 100 degree and very humid weather for about 40 MINUTES because the vehicle was not even clean yet! Whatever you do, do not trust Hertz and do not trust its subsidiary, Firefly. My mother booked a car rental to see nearby Mayan ruins. Firefly employees tried to trick her into accepting higher charges, keeping her at the off-site help desk more than an hour after her arrival to "work out the details." They were exceedingly meticulous about exploring opportunities to make more money off her, but failed to give any sort of warning that the tank was almost empty. They sent her home well after dark with not one word about it. My mother left for the ruins the next morning, thinking she was driving on a full tank, and ran out of gas on an isolated road. However, at the time she had no idea that gas was the issue. She called Firefly employees FOUR times requesting assistance, only to be kept on hold for 20 minutes at a time and then hung up on when the employee realized that that they had released a car with an empty tank. Were it not for the kindness of strangers, including state police (?!), I shudder to think what might have happened to her on that lonely road. She chose Hertz because she trusted its US-based brand. She rented from Hertz ahead of time trusting that they would be the company she would deal with. She went along with the Firefly, trusting that Hertz would demonstrate responsibility for its subsidiary. She was sorely disappointed with Hertz on all fronts. If you want a positive trip, book anywhere but with Hertz/Firefly. read more

We had a terrible experience with Hertz Car Rental in Merida. There were all kinds of additional charges on our bill and the math on the bill doesn't add up. We were not given credit for the $110 we pre paid for collision and damage waiver and we were not given credit for the $67 we paid for taxes and fees when we made our reservation through travelocity. Hertz corporate has not been helpful. They say that since that location is a privately owned franchise I have to deal directly with them to resolve issues. They will not do so on my behalf, this despite the business operating under the Hertz logo and despite being booked through Hertz international. I will NEVER rent from Hertz again! Beware!
