The Salmon was another seafood restaurant on our list of places to eat while in Oslo…read more It was located in Aker Brygge which was a newer and expensive neighborhood. There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. It was the right choice as the rain really started to come down about that time. One caveat was that we had to wrap up our meal within 1.5 hours which wasn't a problem for us. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check. While tipping wasn't expected in Norway, the Salmon's credit card terminals start with a tipping option screen before you can pay. If you're curious about salmon farming in Norway then check out the exhibit at the other end of the restaurant.

The Salmon does an excellent job of showcasing the fresh and wonderful quality of salmon in many different dishes. The tasting plate was one of the best dishes they had. There were three different pieces of salmon with different accompaniment. I don't remember the exact cuts, but one was Lox, and the other was a cold smoke. My guest got a ginger salmon salad she loved. We also got the torched salmon nigiri to taste. The hype is real! This is definitely a must try! They get extremely busy, so a reservation is a must! They had indoor and outdoor seating with a heated patio (it was a bit chilly when we were there).

We did not have a reservation, but luckily they managed to fit us in at a shared table. This place is extremely popular so I would highly recommend making a reservation. To start, we ordered the cod croquettes to share. Perfectly fried and golden brown, these croquettes were absolutely delicious and the accompanying sauce paired perfectly. For our entrées, I ordered the fish and chips while my husband ordered the creamy fish soup and my father ordered the fish gratin. All three dishes were fresh and delicious, but I think the fish gratin was my favorite. So if you find yourself an Oslo looking for a delicious meal down by the water, come check out Fiskeriet.

The outside seatings were very full. We had fish and chips, creamy fish soup, and the langoustine special. All are very good, especially the fish soup with salmon and mussels. Fish & Chips is the famous dish there. The langoustine plate came with 2 langoustines halved and some salad. , Service was fine, it was busy we were told the food could take up to 30 minutes to come out but it came sooner.

Elias Mat & Sant is located in the sentrum, Oslo's city center, so is walking distance to many sites and attractions. I visited here after walking from the palace along Karl Johans Gate as the restaurant is located off this main drag. Make reservations here for the restaurant is small and intimate. It was time to try reindeer while in the Nordic region of the world, so here I did. I ordered the reindeer stew, which was delicious. The reindeer stew was similar to a beef stew, but the reindeer is leaner, so didn't taste as heavy, which is a good thing. Over some mashed potatoes with a gravy and herbs and a side of lingonberry, it completed the meal. It also came with a side of complimentary bread, which is not always the case at other restaurants. That was a nice bonus though because the bread helped soaked up the stew. Perfection!

We tried getting a reservation at Hos Thea, but it was fully booked for the weekend, so we settled for a late dinner reservation here after finding it on TripAdvisor. Originally, I wasn't too excited, but then the day of our dinner, the head chef himself called my boyfriend's cell phone with some questions about my allergies. He wanted to confirm that I was only allergic to the white parts of allium plants and not the green parts, and that butter was okay to include despite my lactose intolerance. Upon walking into the restaurant, I saw that the staff had a printout of all the reservations for the night, along with each party's dietary restrictions. Throughout the night, never once did I have to mention my allergies. They had already crafted special versions of each dish (a garlic-free sauce, a gluten and milk-free flatbread, a dairy free chocolate...) just for me. I've never eaten at a restaurant so at peace before. The meal was nothing short of a gastronomical experience. Dishes were modern, creative, well thought out and executed, beautifully plated, locally sourced, and minimally processed: the "tree" starter contained raw vegetables that tasted like the earth, the herring and lamb brisket were simply pan fried, and I had my very first raw pork tartare. My only criticism was that everything was on the salty side, but my boyfriend thought it was fine, so perhaps it's just me. The service throughout the night was stellar, with the sommelier and chefs stopping by for little chats with the guests. It didn't feel at all pretentious or snobby, but it was very attentive and professional. They always folded my napkin when I went to the restroom and refilled my water for me. It was also much fun watching the chefs work in the open kitchen, which was of course kept painstakingly clean. It's only a matter of time before they earn a Michelin star.
