Instantly recognizable as a Douglas Tilden sculpture by the movement of its figures and fabrics…read moreforged in granite and bronze, it's one of three San Francisco sculptures commissioned by this turn-of-the-century artist known as the "Michelangelo of the West". All three of Tilden's sculptures were placed on Market Street where two remain ("Admission" and the "Mechanics' Monument") however this piece, also known as the Spanish-American War Memorial, was moved to the foot of Dolores Street at Market in 1925 after it was unveiled in August 1906. The sculpture features Bellona, the goddess of war, astride the winged horse Pegasus with one soldier victoriously brandishing a pistol and one lying prone near Pegasus' hooves. It's a beautiful piece, now dramatically crowned by the shade of a palm tree at the foot of Dolores. Don't pass by without stopping a moment to take a closer look or just gaze upon it while sitting in traffic on busy Market Street in the Castro.
