These types of murals in general prevent a lot of graffiti. Some building these owners turn over…read moretheir exterior walls to artists at a specific cost. I recently spoke to one of these artists. There is some pay involved and there is an understanding that the art work generally doesn't last forever. Its a unique relationship between artist and tenant or building owner. I think the bad part of it is the ulterior motive - its not as if people have these murals for pure love of art - rather its to avoid something bad. I suppose building owners are 'in like' with these sorts of projects. I guess I see it as putting a missing person's face on the side of a milk carton.

There have been attempts to declare it a landmark historical site. The exterior corner wall hosts the Hibernia Beach Memorial. The memorial is to mostly LGBTQ people in the neighborhood who have passed away, historically from AIDS. The wall was featured in International publications because of its tribute to Princess Diana. Photos are taped to the wall, items on the sidewalk include flowers, candles, rainbow flags. The plaza also hosts a large heart sculpture & an annual Christmas tree.

Instantly recognizable as a Douglas Tilden sculpture by the movement of its figures and fabrics…read moreforged in granite and bronze, it's one of three San Francisco sculptures commissioned by this turn-of-the-century artist known as the "Michelangelo of the West". All three of Tilden's sculptures were placed on Market Street where two remain ("Admission" and the "Mechanics' Monument") however this piece, also known as the Spanish-American War Memorial, was moved to the foot of Dolores Street at Market in 1925 after it was unveiled in August 1906. The sculpture features Bellona, the goddess of war, astride the winged horse Pegasus with one soldier victoriously brandishing a pistol and one lying prone near Pegasus' hooves. It's a beautiful piece, now dramatically crowned by the shade of a palm tree at the foot of Dolores. Don't pass by without stopping a moment to take a closer look or just gaze upon it while sitting in traffic on busy Market Street in the Castro.

Oakland's governance has been made rockier with the revenue shortfalls caused by the Covid pandemic. Oakland is governed by a city administrator appointed by the Mayor who has limited powers per se. Da Mayor is basically a ceremonial figurehead. Massive overtime cost$ incurred by the police & fire departments resulted in continued budget deficits.
