    Sobeys - Holy $18.99 for a watermelon!

I dropped by Clearspring Centre to visit Winners. I was parked closer to Sobeys, which has its own entrance next door to the mall entrance. I decided to use it. I briefly cut through Sobeys to get to the mall and ultimately to Winners. Although I had just got groceries earlier in the day, I always enjoy checking out new grocery stores. Huge, long watermelons greeted me. I'm not sure what mammoth fertilizer was used on them, but they were gigantic. Each one was going for $18.99. Insane! I love watermelon. Not that much! Speaking of insane, this store had an extensive selection of freeze pops. Mr Freeze. Crush. Popsicle. Kisko. Wow! I was impressed that it had the no-sugar-added Mr Freeze. My mini fridge in my hotel room didn't have a freezer. If it did, I would have bought a box. The produce section looked great. I loved seeing grapes, cherries, avocados, and more. You can get hot foods to go. It's has Our Kitchen, which features sandwiches, entrees, pizza, and more. I like Steinbach because it has one of every grocery store. This Sobeys is perfect. It had everything that I liked and would want at a grocery store. As with all Sobeys stores, you can earn Scene+ points. It's nice to use your points towards free stuff and a lot more. I like this Sobeys. It's convenient at a mall. It's also nice that it has a separate entrance so folks can shop here before the mall opens and after it is closed for the day. (259)

It was perfect to get some fruit, drinks, and breakfast items. This grocery store is located in a plaza with a Starbucks. It is next door to a Liquor Mart. There was a lot of parking available. This store also has a Mobil gas station across from it. When you walk into the store, the produce section is in front of you. It looked fresh and appealing. I ended up getting a bag of imperfectly perfect gala apples, which lasted my entire stay in Winnipeg. They were delicious. I also picked up a twelve-pack of Pepsi zero lime. It also lasted my entire stay. It was refreshing to consume cold with some ice. I also got some unsweetened vanilla almond beverage. It was the same deal having it cold, but without a ton of sugar. The vanilla was subtle. I realized that I didn't have any breakfast items, which prompted me to return the following day. Done! I got some Pizza Pops that were on sale. This store had the limited taco version that is awesome if you like a bit of spice to them. I then got distracted seeing Hostess cakes going for $2 a box. I don't recall ever having the vanilla cupcakes, so I got some. You get six cupcakes, with two of them hermetically sealed in each package. I managed to take a couple back home after this trip. They were smaller than I had expected, a bit on the sweeter side, but they were enjoyable for dessert. I got a human cashier both times. Both staffers (female on the first day and male the second) were helpful and friendly. I paid with a credit card both times. Done! The plastic bag rule isn't as strict in Manitoba as it is in Ontario. I came prepared with a canvas tote bag (habit!), but you can get a bag if you need one. I used a shopping cart the first time and a basket the second. I never had any issues using either one or finding an available one. This store has a pharmacy and a wellness station. Thenkatterballowsnyou to test your blood pressure and more. I like that this store posts notices about the hours of operation for the week, thanks to Canada Day landing on a Monday. You see them by the baskets before you officially walk into the store. This store also takes a flyer and posts each page up for folks to read. It's a nice touch. Prices were decent at this No Frills. It had everything that I needed. I enjoyed shopping here during my stay. I'd return here when I'm staying in the Island Lakes area again. (263)

The owners should really do something about this cashier with an attitude problem. Some people are meant to work in the back where they can't be seen or heard. So the good news about Doug's Supermarket. Chuck & Steve and family run a great show and excel in…read moremy favorite food areas, the filling kind! Always being the critic, hard to condemn Doug's Supermarket. Once you understand how tough its is to do business in Warroad, you'll have a whole new respect for Doug's Supermarket when you understand the Two day round trips from Minneapolis which makes logistics expensive and critical to fresh produce, and fresh meats. The audience, well the majority are very even keeled salt of the earth kind, you know the average Joe. "Butt", in every crowd there's a few high brow folks who you might say are hard to please, with a more refined palate which demands a higher good feel environment hence the Doug's Supermarket recent re-model. So Doug's might feel high end, but they try hard to meet the demands of all people who call Warroad home. The gang at Doug's try's hard to bring the freshest produce, and price sensitive commodities to what is a declining market with both shrinking market share, and aged out demographics, they still do a fine job even with all the oversight from some particular audience members. Fresh produce, as good as its gets North of Saint Cloud, Bakery not scratch, but ready made. Will custom bake upon request, you just need to request. I have ordered scratch made rhubarb pie, and its absolutes any pie that's crossed by palate. By far the best meat department I've been into in a grocery store in Twenty Years. Great cuts of Choice Steaks, and occasional rift of Prime cuts in house. Homemade sausage plant, real smoker. Some exceptional Jerky's, Brats, Steaks, beef sticks and hams oh my! Caribou Coffee, nice addition to Warroad. But, how about the addition of a drive through window, to heat things up in Warroad with a little push back to that new copy cat coffee company. Food for thought ? Anyways, Doug's never really disappoints in world of high shrink, low margin, long hours, huge geographical ebbs. Doug's really does a fine job in a tough marketplace. Keep up the good work Doug's Supermarket, you may not hear it from big brother, but you make Warroad a better place. Without you, Warroad well it would still be Warroad, just without food! So hey, you have that going for you! Thank you,
