Awesome little spot to visit in the area. The parking lot is small, so it could get crowded and hard to access in a busy day. This lighthouse had a nice garden in back that leads to the sea wall walkway. You can go for a longer walk or just sit in the garden and watch the butterflies, whichever you prefer. There are several benches to sit on around the property. When we arrived it was empty which made for a very peaceful experience. The lighthouse itself is small, but with very pretty views. There is a small souvenir shop as well and ways you can support to lighthouse inside. You can see the whole property in 5 minutes, but on a nice day you could stay for 30 minutes enjoying the nature and sites. It's a great spot you can add to your day of adventures to see the area. read more

They are typically on a breakwater or at the end of a spit of land. This resembles a lightHOME! Hereford Inlet Light is a 50 foot tower that encompasses the home it stands with and was put into service in 1874. This isn't the original location; due to erosion and high water, it has been moved a little farther inland. It is still in service as a functioning aid to navigation, run by the US Coast Guard, in contrast to many lighthouses that have been replaced with modern technology. We ventured out from Atlantic City to see this lighthouse. It's free admission and plenty of street parking. Pro tip: they do not have a bathroom on site so be sure to stop by Wawa on your way in. The inside has a lot of history about the lighthouse. The woman who greeted us was very friendly and helpful. Outside there are beautiful gardens and a walkway to a great view of the ocean. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area! read more

Well, we did indeed dork it up as advertised and wound up doing the Lighthouse Challenge this year. Because we had already climbed Hereford in June we skipped doing it again as quite honestly with only 69 steps and at a height of 49 feet, it's only so interesting especially when you just climbed a few months prior. The one thing about coming to Hereford on NJLCW is that considering how small they are they really know how to do it up by adding some external toilet facilities, a few food vendors, musicians and several vendors selling more types and kinds of Lighthouse/beach themed arts and crafts then I knew could exist. It also helps that their garden still looks fantastic even in October. The only obvious downside was simply that parking was very tough. Sure, it was the off season but Hereford on Sunday morning had a very good turnout and when you combine that with their very, very small parking lot it equaled a bit of a hike. read more

We found this Lighthouse by mistake. We heard the fog horn and saw the light going around late at night. It's kind of fun and spooky. I like it because it is right on the street accessible. Some lighthouses are inaccessible. It operates under the volunteers of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Commission. According to the Lighthouse Commission's website, the Hereford Lighthouse is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places as of 1977 and it is part of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. It is operated and maintained with money generated by Lighthouse tours, the gift shop and various fund raising projects. John Marche served as the first lighthouse keeper for less than three months before drowning when his rowboat overturned on returning from the mainland. The next keeper, Freeling "Captain" Hewitt, an American Civil War veteran, served that position for the longest time, 45 years. We only went at night so we only have night pictures. I am giving it 4 stars because it has garden tours and on going festivals. The gardens look adorable. This lighthouse has alot of history but so do they all. I love the individual stories of each lighthouse 69 steps to see the view. Great area. Beautiful homes to enjoy while driving to and from. I went during the off season so traffic both cars and people were at a comfortable level. I could only imagine how busy it is during the peek season. This lighthouse is not located at a park. They have a small parking lot next to the building. read more

A great place to visit while in Wildwood. The grounds are beautiful. It's filled with beautiful flower gardens, trees, and flowering shrubs. You can stroll through the paths and there are benches throughout to rest on and enjoy the gardens. There is a gift shop in the lighthouse and you can climb the lighthouse for a small fee. We had a nice visit at the lighthouse. Came across on our walk down the seawall. The woman at the lighthouse was informative and fun, my kids loved it. I visited the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in May 2013, and I discovered a special site. The beautiful garden surrounding the lighthouse sets it apart from the other lighthouses I have had the privilege to visit. We stumbled upon this lighthouse by accident when taking a walk on our vacation. What a great surprise! Beautiful gardens surround the exterior and have many benches that face the inlet. We saw a few people enjoying their morning coffee & newspaper in this lovely setting. ( A lot of great photo ops for those who are so inclined.) We came back the next day for the tour inside of the lighthouse and had a really nice morning here. Learned a good deal about the history of the area, the lightkeepers, and general seafaring history. Great tour, beautiful history. It's worth stopping by and checking out. I gained a greater appreciation for the families and captains and light keepers. You should know the history of any place you love, and the tour guides keep the stories of North Wildwood alive!
