Heracles Gate separates uptown from downtown in the ancient Roman city in Ephesus. The two existing pillars feature Hercules. Archeologists think that the pillars may have been brought from other structures in the 4th century. It was common for building materials to have been recycled from other structures. The gate may have been placed to limit vehicular traffic down Curettes Road.
The gate gets its name from Hercules who is shown on the pillars. Hercules is considered to be the greatest of the Greek heroes.
The sculpture of the winged goddess Nike is believed to have originally come from this site as well. read more
