Just saw this show at the Harlot, and I must say, I enjoyed myself immensely! So refreshing to FINALLY have a unique theater experience in SF!
It's a hoot! These gals have it going on, and completely covered! There are several different theatrical elements at play here keep us entertained: singing, dancing, humor, improv, light drama. There is even a little 'gentle' audience participation prior to the show (no worries! not the kind that makes you feel uncomfortable or violated! Just good fun, if your game!)
At times I felt like I was watching a fairy tale on stage (except i was in a nightclub, which was new!) I often found a grin plastered across my face. This is not a common occurrence for me while watching theatrics. So, I was obviously entertained.
The story was charming. In a nutshell, it's three rebellious lady royals (thus the "Rebel Highness" part) trying to break the chains of conformity. They each want to do their own thang, and break the mold. Go against the grain, if you will. Pretty awesome theme, I my opinion, for some of us have a little experience in mold breaking, and can relate. I can definitely appreciate the sense of empowerment the show invokes. (think there is even a song called, "Empowerment," So, let's hear you roar, ladies! (eh, you guys will roar a little too!)
The costumes are stunning! (Dude. Where can i get one?) The vocals of the ladies are terrific. Pop stars & opera singers? Together? Neat-o! The songs are also quite original. The tunes seem to bounce between the classical & the POPpy. (Think, Madonna, hanging with Marie Antoinette, dancing to DJ Johannes S. Bach,...that is, until Marie Callas come & crashes the party.) Again refreshing to hear something new.
The supporting players are also fantastic. The gent playing the part of footman was very engaging and funny. The chamber maids are both sweet and friendly, as they walk the room offering finger foods & chatting with the audience. The dancers on stage are smooth and interpretive, adding just the right amount of art to the performance. Lovely choreography. Best of all, all members of this troop stay in character throughout the night, so the atmosphere is consistent. There is even an opportunity to mingle with the cast after-wards. Maybe snap a photo or two.
I will end my two cents by confessing that I had a great time at this revue. The show is polished, balanced and ORIGINAL! I intend to go see them again with some friends, at their final show this Sunday. I also plan on asking where they bought those costumes! read more
