It's been awhile since I last came by this library. It now has even more wonderful updates, and FREE parking in their garage. The parking spaces are limited however, but it's a nice perk for the patrons. LOVE! read more

I really like the place and am glad they got rid of the cold war bunker they had previously. It is light and airy and has a good selection of seating. The Wi-Fi works well and they seem to have plenty of computers. In addition, you can often obtain free copying and faxing. You will only find out what services are available if you ask. You will only find out what access to materials you have until you ask. It is not up to to the staff to provide you with all your solutions, sometimes you just have to dig. Tips: If the south wall is too bright, ask staff to lower the blinds--easy enough for them to do. Use the reserve system--you can get any book in the system. If you find something unacceptable, say something. I once found a homeless individual washing up in our male latrine and alerted security forthwith. It was delt with immediately. All in all--a great library. Anyone in our community should not hesitate to visit this spectacular resource. read more

I give all libraries 5 stars, bc HELLO FREE BOOKS FOR EVERYONE. Right in the prime of Uptown, Walker has the best windows. It's a great place to sit and get some work done. It's also a large reminder of the diversity of Minneapolis, and here's another job I would never ever want: Security Guard at Walker Library. I would like to give this guy huge props bc in 90 minutes he was non stop talking to people who may have had various health issues, substance use issues, or just general bad manners. Thanks Security Guard. You must go home very tired and proud. read more

This library is wonderful -- great service and book selection, easily accessible via transit, decent WiFi, easily booked meeting rooms, really awesome book return, so much natural light & so many outlets. The only downsides include the limited hours, the small size (sometimes it's hard to find a table to sit at, especially with a group), and that there isn't a place with a taller surface where people can stand and work/read. 95% of the time, it's quiet and clean and I can find books I'm looking for and a place to hang out undisturbed for a while. Since I first reviewed the Walker, they redid the entire building. The musty smell is gone, replaced by a beautiful building with a big bank of windows. It's full of light and friendliness. The librarians are very helpful, as usual. I was able to reserve a meeting room and the Internet was good enough for Google Hangouts. I can order books online and pick them up when notified. They have exhibits, and allow you to check out ipads (although I've never needed one). Who needs more? Five stars! read more

Super small library but they've done well with maximizing the space. Lots of window = lots of sunlight. I love all libraries! No matter what the size is, you can always get the books you want by reserving them ahead of time. And it's clearly a convenient thing to be able to drop books off at the nearest library location you're currently driving by. Whenever I dog-sit for some friends while they're out of town, this is the library that I walk to. Since it's in the heart of Uptown, parking isn't a thing of convenience, so I only will go here when I'm staying at my friends place. Oh, and even if parking was reliable, it's on Hennepin Ave (congestion city), so when it's all said and done, walking will probably be faster than driving...even if you live 10 miles away. Another unique feature that I've noticed is the "vending machine" of iPads that one can rent. Clever, even if I never plan to use it. And while it is rather small, just as I do at the big libraries, I request books ahead of time to be transferred to its location and come pick it up. And when I pick up the book, I can't resist browsing a little just in case my eye catches something interesting. read more

Braved the coldest day this winter (-10) to go to a MacPhail Center "Sing, Play, Learn" for little kids at the library. But it was very worth the freezer-burn; the teacher from MacPhail was fantastic. For 45 minutes she lead songs, activities, dances, parachutes and more. She had lots of instruments, toys, and props which everyone, adults included, got to use. She was so liked, that after every activity, all she had to do was ask for the instruments/toys back, and all the kids, even my 19-month-old, dutifully cleaned up. My kid had a blast, and was congratulated by the teacher for her monkey noise (oo-oo-ah-ah). I've also been to some fun and educational story times here put on by the resident librarians. This isn't a place I come to hang out or browse through the shelves, though it is a quiet spot for reading. My favorite thing about the county library system is the website. You can easily see what books they have and reserve them. If there's a waitlist, you get notified when the book is available and they will hold it for you at the location of your choice. This is what I generally do. If the book I want is available, I'll occasionally go and pick it up at a different location. Overall I love using this library system. read more

Who doesn't love the library? It's free books! The older man at the front desk is very helpful for finding books or just figuring out how the library works (I needed help). This location isn't very big and doesn't have too big of a selection but I'll tell you a trick. Use their website and request your books from the other libraries. In a few days you'll get an email that they are ready for pick up. Couldn't be easier! I breeze in and out of quite frequently trying out cookbooks before I decide to buy them. It's kind of dark and dingy inside so it's not exactly a library you'd hang out in. Nonetheless it gets the job done which makes me happy. Park in the lot, pay your meter for a few minutes, or use the drop box. Couldn't be more convenient. read more

Being just down the street from my apartment, Walker is a convenient place to go to work for a few hours when I need to get out. There is nothing impressive about it at all (in fact it's a little dank and depressing, and "bumbish" people are abundant at times), but its a free place to go with books, magazines, movies, music, and fast wifi. Nothing to complain about, especially considering the small budget they must have with which to operate. read more

Walker Public Library is awesome if you want to read some graphic novels (they have the entire Strangers in Paradise collection, which is just lovely), get some test prep books (very extensive collection for the Praxis series and GMAT, though I'm not sure about the rest), or read some travel books (incredible collection). I can't really speak to the rest of the collections, though they seem on the small end. That being said, what a wonderful place to rent some movies, get some books, or get a free pass to your favorite local museum! Additionally, the mall is super-nice for sitting and reading while people-watching in Uptown. read more

This library was completely torn down and rebuilt, and opened recently. There are big windows and lots of light, public computers and plenty of chairs and tables to use. I mostly use the library to request books and pick them up, but there's a decent browsing selection. I wish it were open more evening and weekend hours, but I'm sure they're doing what they can with their budget. read more

I'm torn on this library. I want to like it really bad because it's small and quaint and is close enough to ride to on my bike, but it's really small and has a poor selection of books. I've seen better book selection (and quality) at thrift stores. Also it's smells pretty strongly of piss and mold and the fact that it's underground makes it vaguely reminiscent of a subway station. It's really seems like more of a hub that is used mostly for the computer stations which take up about 65% of the library. The nice thing is I can have books delivered there for pick up from the other libraries in the county so I'm not stuck just reading Grisham and Clancy novels. In the end I'd rather have this library to go to than none at all so Walker Public Library I am glad you are here. read more

This library is very nice since they remodeled it. It is clean and people aren't laying on computer sleeping as is the case with a few of the other ones. I am not saying that the others are wrong for doing it for right now it is cold outside and many of the homeless use the library for their refuge. Even so I enjoy coming to this library. The staff seem to pretty knowledgeable and nice and the location is great. I wish they would remain open later but in lieu of the location (bars etc.) around it's probably wise for them to close when they do. read more
