I am an engineer retired on Hawaii Island working a small organic farm. My first stage of…read moreretirement, though, was spent in the island nation of Haiti following the devastating earthquake of 2010 installing 10kW solar power plants (there was no reliable electrical grid). When that work came to an end, I headed for real retirement in Hawaii. Waiting for me there (shipped from China) were all the ingredients of a 10kW power plant -- made possible by Dr. Bill Behrens (MIT, PhD), my co-worker in Haiti. I am not a licensed electrician nor a licensed PV installer, and Hawaii is a highly regulated and regimented place. So I began the process of looking for neighborly help. As years passed, trying to procure building permits to build at least a barn where I could mount my panels, I found that some of my equipment would no longer meet HELCO's requirements. Now feeling more pressed, I finally gave up on building it myself and began taking my case to various PV installers. But the "big names" all told me that I would have to sell my solar panels and buy theirs first. (One man even proposed that he could procure 34 SunPower 327s, which he said were fine pan- els, after I had sold the identical panels.) Fortunately, my fifth vendor was Regis Electric. Regis Brun said he would work with me and would be happy to install a system using whatever useful ingredients I already had. I checked reviews on-line and was especially impressed with a manager of about ten-years standing at the Villages at Mauna Lani. He said that of the 80 PV installations he had managed, 70 were done by Regis Electric. In sum, he wrote, "they offered fair prices, knew precisely what they were do- ing, were fast and the quality was superb. The expert service and advice was second to none. Now after many years of service, solar arrays are all working well or quickly repaired if a prob- lem arises. Regis Electric has also repaired photovoltaic installed by other companies." While I can speak to only one system, my experience of Regis Electric matches this description to a tee. The inverter and batteries Regis recommended have received the most favorable expert reviews. They priced the equipment fairly. David, their customer rep was well-informed, well- spoken and responsive. Their technical staff, led by Regis' son Malakai, was also available whenever I needed them. I found Malakai's can-do attitude refreshing. The crew came and followed through till the job was done. I have worked in and among the trades on the Big Island for the past ten years. These young men, led by Manu, were easily the most impressive I have seen. They were respectful. They were diligent, working steadily. They were knowledgeable. And they were professional in all their dealings. The end-result was mag- nificent, exceeding my expectations. I should add that there were no surprises on the financial end. What was represented from the beginning what was charged in the end. Needless to say, I do not hesitate to recommend Regis Electric to my neighbors. They are truly a standout group of men. My solar project which included photovoltaic panels as well as storage batteries was over $80,000…read morewas completed at the end of 2022 and 4 months later has still not passed state inspection. Regis electric did not inform me of the equipment changes they made that caused the inspection failure until I demanded an explanation of the failure.Nor did they promptly resubmit the drawings to the state so that I can claim the tax deductions. I would avoid this company for their complete lack of transparency and their obvious inability to do a proper installation.
