It was a Wednesday night but i assume they only had karaoke on then because it was Christmas. The bar is pretty old fashioned inside, with the bar in the middle of the pub and tables surrounding it. We ordered some vodkas which were reasonably priced (just slightly more expensive than The Brandon Works) and sambucas. Instead of the normal clear shot, the barman gave us Luxardo Sambuca cream, a kind of coffee tasting liqueur, which blew my socks off. Safe to say the rest of the evening is a tad blurry. The locals were really friendly, the karaoke host was lovely and had some great banter with us, we even got up to belt out a bit of the classic Kenny Rodger's The Gambler! The pub always has entertainment on, with bands playing and themed parties for special occasions. It also has quite a sizeable beer garden which is perfect for summer. I would suggest that they make a website for irregular punters like me to see what is on and when. Other than that, it seems like a great wee pub!

This pub used to be known as more of a traditional 'old man's pub' but in recent years has become very popular with the younger generation. It is traditional in decor and style and has a bar wih an adjoining lounge for karioke or live music. We had very plesent lunch; i went for a chicken curry which was nice enough. It came with chips and rice, and the potion was waaay too big! Good for a hungry shopper though. It was really quiet with minimal background noise except for the jukebox when we went, which was a nice oasis from the busy shopping centre.

It's a small pub, but I thought it was really cosy and warm and I quite liked it! It's sort of an old mans pub, but the interior is quite contemporary, with bare stone walls and big plush couches, and a well populated darts board in the corner. It's got a couple of 'rooms' almost, with two seating areas away from the bar, and its also a sports bar, with large screens showing sky sports channels. Great wee atmosphere, and good for a drink after dinner in Riva!

It is great bar for food, cocktails and has live nights, karaoke and other entertainment throughout the week. They have freshened up the look of the bar and it looks and sounds more like a bar from the West End of Glasgow rather than in Hamilton West. It also has a side room with booths which is great for getting something to eat. I've also seen it reserved for private functions. I haven't tried the new menu yet but it looks good. My friend and I just went out for cocktails. I was unfortunately driving but the bar staff were very accommodating and made me virgin French Martinis and they were absolutely delicious. If you're ever out that way pop in and you'll see what a difference it is with the refurb and check out the live music as there is plenty of local talent.

Mavrix is a great wee bar located right in the heart of Hamilton town centre. Despite it being a…read moresort of sports bar, in the sense there's always different sports and games on the multiple flat screens, and me not bring a sporty person, I still love it! They have a full bar, and pride themselves on having life acoustic sets and karaoke on different nights. They also do an open mic night, which is a great idea I think! On Fridays and Saturdays there's a DJ on playing chart hits, but he also takes requests if you ask! Quiet most week nights but very busy on weekends, go here if you fancy a good wee night!

You may wonder why I mention old lady bars, this is because The State reminds me of an old man's pub. It has the original features so has lots of wood and there's many old photos plotted around the seating area. I like them! Fortunately it does not reek of an old man's pub. You know that smell when you just walk by the door?! Bolk! The State is just off of Sauchiehall Street and just round the corner from the King's Theatre so this makes it a wee cheeky break from the pure madness of Sucksthelifeoutyou Street. The State is also good for wee gigs based downstairs in the basement. I've been to a couple of gigs and I do prefer a more intimate gig so sound was admittedly LOUD but it was good music I was listening to. *shimmy* If you want a wee change pop round to the State and I saw they also have plenty beers if you like beer. The reason for reviewing again, is since 2009 The State has dramatically increased the variety, quantity and quality of its real ales/craft beers, offering such an excellent selection that it was crowned Glasgow CAMRA Pub of the Year 2014. This is no mean feat as there are literally thousands of pubs stretching from Oban to Rothesay, Glasgow to Strathaven, Biggar to Airdrie all included in the voting. Fan of Fyne Ales? Oakham beers? The State has at least one beer from each brewery at any one time, being a member of each brewery's "Pubs of excellence" schemes. This also means very difficult to get and one-off beers are often launched or sold exclusively here. It's just a really great pub. And it isn't expensive either. £3.50 max for a pint, including sometimes 7% beers (which I really should stay away from but it's too damn hard given how tasty they are!). If you're not sure of what beer you fancy, ask for a wee taster and the bar staff will be happy to oblige and share their recommendations. Go there now! DO IT! PS - I almost forgot... this is like the only place in the West of Scotland that shows live cricket... if that's your thing. There's also live football on the Sky Sports screens, but it doesn't attract some of your usual footy watching crowd who are just in the pub for the "bantz". The sound is never turned up that high either, but the conversation can make this a loud pub at times!

If you manage to get seating here, guard it with your life--especially if it's in one of the cozy booths. There's regular live music of the Irish folk variety, and the atmosphere tends to get extremely lively. Just as nice is to come here during the down times and appreciate the authentic Irish vibe while have a good long chat with a friendly stranger over a very well pulled pint of Guiness. There's a beer garden for sunny days, and a thoughtful amount of outdoor standing room for smokers in the evenings. Be careful, though - when things get a little too lively the bouncers do not have a sense of humor. One wrong turn and you're out. So just settle in to whatever real estate you can grab and enjoy the raucous and cheerful atmosphere.

I don't love this area of Glasgow - the roads are so confusing, the area is quite industrial and it's not really somewhere you'd head for a pint. Or, so I thought. Once in the doors of the Laurieston, it was like I had an epiphany. It was just like my Nanna's house (although my Nanna's was a bit classier, no offence). It was warm, comforting, welcoming and had some seriously retro decor. As others have mentioned, there's a tasty selection of beers from Fyne Ales but on this visit I opted for cider. We took a seat in the lounge area as the bar was pretty heaving for 1pm on a Saturday (those damn subcrawlers!) and enjoyed the atmosphere and hospitality of by far the friendliest bar staff I've encountered in a long time. Over they came to take our photo, find out our story and give us tips and advice on completing the subcrawl. They even have maps for you! That is SO cool and was very handy later on when I'm sure some people didn't know where they were (um, like me). There's a JUKEBOX as well - a proper old school one where some of the cards are handwritten. It tells you that you have to pay, but just push the buttons and you'll discover that you don't. I put on some great tunes while we were there but I'm not sure anyone else appreciated them. Handy tip: the ladies toilet is only accessible from the lounge.

Yes from the outside you would not give it a second glance. It all looks a bit run down and perhaps even a bit dodgy. To be honest the inside ain't much of an improvement on the outside. It is an old bar that looks like it has not been done up in years. Why four a stars then? Well, what it does not have in terms of polished finishes and decor is made up for by the friendly atmosphere and great array of beers on offer. The staff could not have been more welcoming. They supplied Subcrawl maps and made a point of coming out to chat with us. The even took our photo as they take records of all the "subcrawlers" who pass through their bar. I must admit, I stuck to a boring bottle of becks on the drinks front as I was being very careful what alcohol I took on at this early stage. I would like to go back though and try a few of the far more interesting beers they had on offer. 4 stars for a traditional and slightly shabby, but friendly boozers.
