Some of the best literature that you have never read is being published by this impressive literary…read moremagazine. Most of the writers published in this quarterly aren't aiming to be The Next Big Thing In The Publishing World, although they certainly have the talent to become just that. They're writing for writing's sake, and their work reflects that fact. Usually themed, Tin House Magazine packs a punch with its unique offerings in fiction, poetry and the art of the essay. It's a wonder that this magazine isn't available on newsstands everywhere, but then again its Fall 2009 issue, the doubly-themed "Hope/Dread," featured a brilliant sun on one side and a menacing devil on the other, and the literature was chosen accordingly. Try putting that out there on the same rack with Cosmo and see which one sells faster. But then again, Tin House isn't about sales, at least not in the conventional publishing sense. They are all about good literature, and they're not afraid to publish good literature. In a world gone mad - or at the very least, dominated by popular fiction that's often not worth the paper it's printed on - Tin House is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes strange, often different, usually thought-provoking air, but fresh air all the same. Can I get an "Amen" to that?

And one of the draws is their summer workshop which has readings each night for an entire week from the likes of Aimee Bender, Steve Almond, Jim Sheppard. Students and literary fans come for workshops from all over the country. It doesn't get better to sit at the bog at Reed while your most favorite authors read their work! And I almost feel like I am at adult summer camp or some Ivy League east coast campus for that one week in July!

I think that means that the local Alpha stations are probably the only locally owned broadcast facilities. This includes KBFF-FM, KINK-FM, KUPL-FM, KXL-FM, KXTG-FM, KUFO-AM, KXTG-AM, KWEE-FM. They have talk shows, but I only listen for the news, local and CBS Radio. The KXL talents are great, I only wish they had longer news breaks, it's great news. They really grab me when I'm backpacking out in the Gorge, somewhere out on the Pacific Crest Trail... late night by the campfire... one of my favorite times to listen to KXL.

Let's face it - radio sucks…read more Unless you're dazzled by the ditherings of shock jock radio, feel that npr makes you smarter, or are numb enough to just accept the bland helpings of your (insert genre here) station's latest "hits", radio these days just doesn't deliver. That said, KPSU sucks less. kpsu.org streams their broadcast on the internet 24/7, but if you want to chance the airwaves, take care to listen to 1450 AM only after 5 pm on weekdays. Before 5, the malicious and cunning student geniuses of Benson Polytechnic broadcast their pirate signal featuring show toons and cartoon themes in an effort to discourage you, talented listener, from reaping the joys of college radio. KPSU, alongside KBOO, features a healthy mix of local musicians and off-beat musical selections and radio personalities.

Christa does a lot of interesting audience interaction via e-mail. Hear more local music on "Northwest Previews". Edmund Stone does request shows - let him know what you want to hear. Bill McGlaughlin. Robert McBride. Great hosts. Syndicated programs like "St. Paul Sunday" and "Metropolitan Opera" are pluses. I listen to OPB to get caught up on what's going on, then switch to KBPS. That's all the radio I need. Give a listen at www.allclassical.org.

The selection is incredible, you get the NPR and BBC news bulletins, the DJs are knowledgeable and very listener-oriented. There's organ music on Sunday nights, a humorous show featuring talented young musicians called "From the Top", and they're even going to play the Star Wars movie music for us in celebration of Star Wars 30th anniversary! I've spent years listening to this station; while playing City of Villains, while doing my homework, trying to drown out the old Cobalt lounge I used to live across, and just to relax while looking out at the rain and not washing the dishes like I was supposed to. Not only that, but the fund raisers aren't obnoxious affairs rife with crap programming like PBS's are. In fact, this is often when you here some of their best stuff. This is definitely my favorite radio station in this town.
