As a Trans-Woman on ssi/medicaid in East Texas, 3 years on Gender Affirming Care, I was deathly afraid of being locked up with men. I felt hopeless, depressed, I felt like there wouldn't be anyone who could represent me. On top of the fact I have so many health issues and need to help take care of my grandma, I almost gave up.. Being on a fixed income, I could not afford to plead "not guilty". Being on fixed income, I couldn't afford the time to contest a Jury Trial even when I felt not guilty, as my court dates had already been reset to the maximum and then some for a little over half a year out on bail, and the rise of anti-trans legislation made things so much scarier. I hired him during an incredibly serious and stressful legal situation and paid a substantial amount of money for representation. After ending the attorney-client relationship, I requested an itemized accounting showing exactly what work I was charged for and how my money was applied. I believe a client who pays substantial legal fees deserves a clear accounting of those charges. Instead, I was left frustrated and dissatisfied enough with the situation that I pursued the formal channels available to me. When you're hiring an attorney, you're putting your finances, your trust, and potentially some of the most important matters in your life in that person's hands. Based solely on my experience, I would strongly recommend that prospective clients ask detailed questions IN WRITING before paying any money: Is the fee refundable? How will you be billed? Will you receive itemized statements? How are unused funds handled if representation ends? And exactly what does the fee agreement say? I wish I had demanded clearer answers to those questions before hiring this attorney. I would not hire him again.
