Our first daytime visit out of four to Bad Nieuwschans and we finally found somewhere for a badly…read moreneeded beer. We had cycled 25 miles into a strong headwind with intermittent showers, so somewhere warm and welcoming was badly needed and this was it. Two bottles of Hertog Jan were promptly dispatched, mmmm, lekker! We got talking to a local publican and more beers ensued, with him telling us about his past and about the local traditions. When we paid our bill for6 beers, we were about to leave when two more beers came our way. One of the local traditions apparently! Right, going after these! We put our rain jackets on, only to be presented with two more beers. you get a beer when you put your coat on as well! So after five beers each we left, feeling much better than we had arrived and cycled slowly off to the station to get to Groningen. Highly recommended if you're in the area.
