My husband and I contracted Heidi Mortensen to help us out of a jam with painting the interior of our new home. She came as a referral from the store where we bought our paint, after we had become stuck with our paint test patches. Since we were going for bold, bright, strong colors we didn't want to screw it up. And there was a GREAT potential to screw it up. Enter Heidi. She was amazing. I went around for weeks later telling everyone who cared (or pretended to) that the hour and a half she spent with us was the best $$ we spent in the whole project. No lie. Her normal service is geared to take people through the entire process of selecting color for their home, but my husband and I were on a budget and we already KNEW about what we wanted color-wise but we couldn't nail the right shades. She came in and just charged her hourly rate to help us through the jam, narrowing our issues by listening to us both describe what we each had in mind for the color gold for example, and working from there. She was so amazing. We did the 3 rooms we were stuck on, along with the rest of the house, in an hour and a half flat. All of the colors looked warm and inviting (our goal) and the different colors throughout the house flowed well together. She got us unstuck for an extremely reasonable price. And anyone who has painted an entire room the wrong shade knows what a nightmare it is time and money-wise, to fix. What was also great about Heidi was her willingness to be flexible with us, and not insisting on sticking to her normal routine (which involves several visits and is I am sure, a more thorough and complete service). She came in and did a scaled down visit at our request which was what enabled us to hire her. She also does interior design but I am specifically here to rave about her paint consulting. Heidi's designs were great, and even better... they were great for me. Heidi took the time to get the feel of my place and my lifestyle/tastes. She came up with colors/designs that were right for my condo and right for me. I had tried to remodel the kitchen on my own, and when I saw the results, I knew it was time to call in a pro. Heidi came up with a new setup which worked much better. She came up with improvements from the backsplash to the living room blinds, all while keeping my preferences (and budget) in mind. With Heidi's sharp eye and wealth of experience/contacts, the bathroom came out right the first time. I wish I'd contacted her before I worked on my kitchen. By using Heidi's hardwood-resurfacing and tiling contacts, I got a great deal, and it was hassle-free... or, as hassle free as remodeling can be. And with the great rates Heidi got me on materials and craftsmen, it was like getting her design service for free. Now to go relax in my newly-remodeled home. This review is long overdue! I had moved into a new condo and all the rooms were builder's white - yuck. After six months of putting test colors on the wall, I still could not figure out what colors I wanted to paint. Luckily I found Heidi. She came over to my place with these giant color swatches, probably 1 1/2 by 2 feet each so I could really see the color. Her suggestions were right on target and I love how the place turned out. My wife and I used Heidi for some help picking colors to paint the interior of our new home. She saved us from what may have been a very "interesting" look. She had a great eye, and within the range of colors we were proposing, she helped pick the right shades, and also gave advice to help bring some continuity from room to room. Definitely worth the price, given how much the painting itself cost us, and given how long we'll be living in these colors. Thanks Heidi! By the way, the only reason I gave 4 versus 5 stars, is that we never received a document or email at the conclusion of the project summarizing the different colors she recommended in each room (we relied on our notes). Would be helpful in the future when looking to retouch areas, and it's something we've heard that other consultants provide. Simple fix - next time we'll ask! Heidi is fantastic! She worked within the parameters of our budget but still did not rush us to make any decisions. She took our taste into consideration and listened to our ideas. We picked out a wonderful color scheme that flowed beautifully throughout the entire house. I contacted her again by email after the initial meeting for a last minutes suggestion on exterior front door and she was able to suggest a few colors which worked perfectly. If you want your new home to look like out of the magazine (and cozy at the same time), you should hire Heidi for consultation. I found Heidi through Yelp and I have to say that she did an amazing job for our new house. We are not new to remodeling and have done most of design ourselves. However, color has been always a problem for us. I like using color in my home as part of decoration but always have trouble picking the colors. I have contacted Heidi and we exchanged a few emails about the project. I was looking for someone who can mainly help me with color consultation for my new place as well as help me integrate my current furniture into my new place. It was important for me to find someone who can make sure there is color unity, balance and flow between all of the rooms. I found everything I was looking for in Heidi. She spend 8 hours working on our project. She had to visit our current house in order to take a look at our furniture and decor and then we went to our new house where she was supposed to pick up new colors considering our current furniture and accessories. She did an amazing job. We are very happy with outcome and how all the colors work together and how they accent the furniture and that feeling that you get when you enter each room... I am a building contractor that has worked with Heidi on a few kitchen and bath remodels, and i would encourage anyone looking to hire a kitchen or bath designer to hire Heidi to do their design, and here is why: The main reason is that Heidi has a very good eye for design and color, and that the final product is always harmonious and pleasing. She has a knack for finding those small details that draw a project together, like having iridescent glass tile accents that catch the light just so, making a whole back splash glow with color. Are the iridescent glass tiles expensive? Of course they are, and that's why the whole kitchen looks so rich and luxurious. But I am the guy that installed the tile, so i know that the client only had to buy three square feet of the expensive tile , while a modest tile was used for the rest. So thru careful planning, the nice tile is highlighted, complimenting and not overpowering... Heidi's designs give very good bang for the buck. Secondly, she works well within parameters. I have sat with her on initial client meeting, she asks many questions to both homeowner and contractor... do you want this, can we tear down this wall, how much will it cost, etc. As a contractor, I know i can do certain things cheaply, others are more expensive to pull off. For example, a load bearing wall between a kitchen and a dining room with plumbing and electrical lines running thru it can be expensive to remove. So i have seen her present options... for this much we can do this, but you can save this much to do the other. In the example of the wall above, she saved the clients thousands of dollars by specifying a opening in the wall rather than demolishing it; she then found a remnant of a gorgeous marble slab for a counter top - an accent piece that really tied the kitchen and dining room together. Once again, a luxurious result without spending very much! Finally, she is truly pleasant to work with. She keeps appointments, gets back to me when i have questions, clarifies details, and knows enough about construction (unlike most kitchen and bath designers) to provide good plans that i can build off of. So if you are looking for a designer that works well with contractors, one that will work to build a team to give you a good final product, and one with lots of local knowledge of resources, you would do quite well by choosing Heidi Mortensen. read more

Heidi is wonderfully creative and such a pleasure to work with. She helped us renovate our condominium in the Marina and all her recommendations were fantastic. I have been amazed at the transformation and all of our friends say it looks like something you would see in a design magazine. Heidi spent the time to understand what we were trying to achieve and provided us very reasonably priced options that look amazing. At each step along the way she kept us fully informed about what was happening and let us know early on if there was a problem with supply. Having done several renovations I can tell you this is a key issue. In the past I have been significantly delayed because a tile or countertop choice was out of stock and we had to wait or change our choice. Once we had settled on a design choice Heidi immediately checked availability and ordered so that everything was available on time with no disruption to the contractor. Heidi is easy to talk with and is always prompt and professional. She was patient with my initial over the top suggestions and brought me back to reality with a gentle nudge.
