I'm not one to usually doff my cap at a Wetherspoons, as I've not managed to find that many a good one, but in this instance I change my tune. Well, for a Wednesday night, at least.
What's the sketch? Super cheap drinks that break the boundary of gross alcopops and crap lager, including something like nine cask ales, and various interesting craft beer bottles. Winner!
Inside has air conditioning. On a stuffy September evening, this was bliss. Well done that Wetherspoons. The building itself is grand, with high ceilings and clean tables. The staff are a tidy and chatty outfit, whose banter and great service was muchly appreciated.
The outdoor seating may be on top of the main road, but you're nicely caged in from the passers by, with a railing. Although that won't stop some utter plums popping the balloons tied to the gating with cigarettes, as if they're extremely clever. (They are not. They are idiots.)
The blue lighting, facing you as if you're on stage, can cause minor headaches. There is an outdoor non-smoking section too.
The toilets are a long haul down the stairs, but were nicely clean! Clientele ranged from suits just out of work, students just back from summer, bar flies, and others - basically a fairly mixed bag. The atmosphere was fair.
