Do NOT go to this office. They cancelled my two appointments with NO notice. They claimed the first…read moretime I told them I called them and told them I "changed my mind" and that the second time I called and left a voicemail saying I wanted to cancel. I asked if they could be confusing me with another patient because I never changed my mind and I certainly never called and left a message trying to cancel. They said no and that they wouldn't accommodate me because my chart said I had cancelled multiple times before. I've never had a prior appointment with them so that's not possible. I even called multiple times to confirm my appointment both times before making the drive and never received a call back or confirmation. Both times myself and my partner had to take two days off work to be able to spend the night in Hilo. We had to hire a pet sitter both days. The second time (today), we drove almost five hours round trip only to learn that my appointment had been cancelled and I had been discharged as a patient for multiple cancellations. We were rudely dismissed by their receptionist who was truly awful for no reason and said "welcome to Hawai'i" when I told her I had called to confirm but never gotten a call back. I've met Dr. Russo on O'ahu when I was younger and he seemed like a nice doctor. His receptionists are going to make him lose a lot of patients for trying to blame his patients for their scheduling mistakes.

I answered 5-10 questions over the phone and since I don't drink or smoke or take drugs and I'm fully compliant with taking my Meds, I figured His office would call back with a Yes! when the following week rolled around and I hadn't heard from His office by Monday afternoon, I called back to get not only a NO, but an BS explanation that he's on OVERLOAD! Why did you tell me he's taking New patients but only on a case by case basis and ask me specific, personal concerns about my health IF IN FACT BUDDY is NOT TAKING NEW PATIENTS BECAUSE HE's on OVERLOAD! Why? I am practically a Boy Scout! I don't drink or smoke or take drugs! To add insult to injury his office gives me BACK my own Wahine doctor's office like some kine Comedy bit! He took the time to thoroughly read through my medical information which shows me that he genuinely cares about his patients. He shows his concerns by asking questions. He provided me with the best solutions for my situation. I appreciated that he respected my decision with what I was most comfortable doing to take care of my health for now. Dr. Festerling has my respect and trust because of how he treated me. He treated me with much kindness and responded positively towards my values and morals when it comes to taking care of my health issues.

I was a repeat mother, with both severe orthopedic and cardiac issues so I was high-high risk. I chose him after interviewing 4 other OBs on the island (in Kona, Waimea and Hilo) because he demonstrated pure, raw skill. His skill comes from experience, not from hubris. His appointments are quick, to-the-point, and he wastes no time. He often took me in early. His bedside manner is straightforward and direct, his advice and instructions are no-nonsense. I get it that some folks won't appreciate that. But I did. Every time I had a question, he would take as much time as needed to answer it fully. We would sit in his office as long as it would take. I had a cesarian. He listened to my concerns carefully and we made the decision on how early to do the procedure together. It was just right, not too early, and not too late. The baby was 8' 10oz. The procedure itself, despite my complications, and my worry, went smoothly. From the time they wheeled me in to wheeling me out was 45 minutes. The baby came out quickly, and was screaming from the very first breath. Dr. Nitta is fast and efficient. Really, I could not have asked for better. Sure there are folks who prefer to go to Honolulu and be treated in the big medical centers, but I didn't want that. I wanted to be home, with my family, and I needed someone skilled enough to manage my case. Dr. Nitta is in my view, the best, most confident, and experienced OB on the island. If you want skill - he's your man. If you want warm hugs and a sunny disposition, try the women's center in Kona.

I couldn't help but think this guy is just trying to get more insurance money off me by making me schedule multiple appointments. I ended up having surgery which he was 2 hours late to show up to. He didn't offer to write me any prescriptions for my symptoms I was dealing with. The lack of empathy and caring demeanor were not very comforting. If you get a referral to this guy, I would highly recommend asking to see another doctor. Don't forget you have options. Don't get stuck!
