My mom volunteers at this charity shop two days a week. While I am here visiting from Canada, I volunteer with her, and shop a bit (or a lot!) between tasks. :)
What was interesting for me to learn, is that many of the people that support this shop are regulars. They donate and shop regularly in support of the charity. And volunteers like my mom appear to be a part of their experience. They come in and chat, ask for the volunteers to watch out for specific items for them. I think the community around this shop is awesome!
Also, the inventory -- the whole store - rotates every two weeks. So these regulars get to see the new stuff coming out daily, and dont run into the same items week over week.
I believe there are 13 of these shops in Northern Ireland. Volunteers drop items daily into the shop, they are inspected, steamed if in good repair, labelled, dated and put on the floor. After two weeks, if items arent sold, they are pulled and shipped to an alternate location.
As someone who loves to shop second hand, i loved to hear the process. That tells me, as a shopper, it is always worth coming in, because there is new stuff daily, and there is a system to move the stuff that isnt selling.
I love that these charity shops operate together to raise funda for heart disease. What a fantastic way to raise funds and awareness.
And.... Unlike other shops, this one is clean. No funky smell. :) read more
