Suffers enormously from the same negligent malaise that endangers patients in the worst possible way. Staff are asleep at the wheel. Receptionists socialize at the expense of patients waiting to be seen. Be prepared to wait. If you have an appointment, be sure to show up at least an hour early. People always complain about hospitals. We live in a country were its free. So you wait awhile the important part is that your injuries are seriously looked at. My family have been here a few times and have been looked after. Gone through 2 pregnancies with great care and friendly staff. read more

This hospital is awful. My boyfriend was there for surgery and they made him wait over 12hours with no food or water. They didn't even give him an IV to keep him hydrated. They also didn't provide him with any information on how long his recovery would take or what he should expect. Also, they didn't update his emergency contact information. Angry, disappointed and will never be returning. read more

Ahh, my local hospital. The only reason I go here is because it's nearby. The quality of care is nothing to complain about and the nurses are nice, but the emergency ward is completely abused and you'll end up waiting at least 3 hours, even on an off-night, to get care. I hear they're modernizing it though, so it'll likely up its service as well. read more

Not much to look at on the outside. But this hospital prides itself with being baby-friendly (as designated by the world health organization). It can be confusing, but I do find that they are constantly looking for ways to improve their processes. I think that's something that's pretty positive. I've received some good care here, so I can't complain. read more

I recently had surgery here. And I am thoroughly impressed with there patient care. I had to go to emerge first because the medication I took had some severe side effects and was able to stay there and rest with medication from 3 am to 8 when the checked me in for my surgery. Check in for the surgery was very smooth and everyone was so friendly. I ended up having my surgery bumped up by an hour. I had never had surgery before and walking into the OR to me looked just like a TV show. Not a bad thing again all the nurses and socialists were so comforting and nice. Coming out of surgery they made sure I was OK before sending me to my hospital room. They explained everything to me and ensured that I was OK and comfortable. Once I got to my room they checked on me constantly for an hour and because I wasn't sure how I was feeling my surgeon came in to talk to me to put me at ease which is apparently not something they normally do since everything went well. I had 2 or 3 nurses come in and check on me and they were all very helpful and kind except one she was ready to quickly get me out of the hospital and I told her I wasn't comfortable or ready yet and wanted I talk to my doctor and she rolled her eyes and said she would see if she could find her. Otherwise everyone else was very kind and comforting. Additionally the next day a nurse called me to follow up and see how I was feeling which was surprising but very comforting. Overall very impressed with patient care at this hospital. read more

I had my son here 23 yr ago. I had to returned today for a medical appt. the hospital very old not much was done as far as I can tell in the past 23 years. Waiting time wasn't bad at all, very reasonable.The staff nurse/doctor at the breast clinic are very nice, friendly and informative. read more

This review is for a trip to the ER at Toronto East General. This was Friday night around midnight, and the wait was about 3 hours for me at that time. There were 4 people that I interacted with. 1) Initial triage nurse. She was friendly enough and got me through without much hassle, but it was hard to tell at first when I would be seen. A numbered waiting system would be better. 2) Admissions secretary. Again, friendly enough and got me through without problems. 3) ER nurse. This one does a more in-depth assessment. This one was very aloof and not very pleasant. I first walked in, didn't know where to go, and she told me to "just stand there and we'll get to you". So I stood with no concept of when I'd be talked to until finally someone came around. Extremely poor way of handling it. 4) Doctor. Finally, I saw the doctor, a young man named Dr. Kaufman. Very pleasant and helpful guy who made the whole wait feel like it was worth it in the end. So hats off to him for basically making up for the other staff. Overall, some more communication would have helped greatly, and they were lucky that Dr. Kaufman was working that day, as he made up for the other staff. read more

Went to emerg for acute abdominal pain. First thing they did was a chest X-ray! No one asked if I needed help as I struggled in pain to the washroom. 2 X-rays and 2 CT scans later they found my ruptured appendix and then I finally got some attention. The rooms are dirty. When I was concerned about my headache, wheezing ann swollen body pot op no one seemed fazed. Those are are serious symptoms of fluid ademea. Will NOT be going there again. read more

This hospital is very dysfunctional, i was there for 7 hours, slipped and fracture my arm. i went in at 11am on Friday 15 Feb, standing there for 15 minutes in front the STOP 1 sign, and a 4 behind me, then we were given a number. There was 2 nurses there and then 1, she taken her sweep time, chatting with her colleagues as they walk by. She did check a few patience, she seems working on a quota or something., very 15-20 per patience and yet there are 2 registration staff sitting there waiting to register patience. Short story is i waited about an hours before the nurse check what is wrong with me, then to the registration. I was sent tot the green zone, greeted by a friendly nurse.. great finally there is service... i was sent to xray.. and hour wait., worst no one is there, and only a place to leave form in.. back to the green zone.. wait another hour.. and wait.. doctor came see the that the bone is broken, and wait .. to put cast on.. then x-ray and then wait.. Toronto East General, there is not accountability, no one seems to care about patience( i could be wrong on this one) but nurses and doctors a very good there but the service i'm getting is subpar, luckily this life/death situation. read more

OMG - I have been trying to get hold of the Family Health clinic on Danforth for 7 working days straight in order to set up an appointment. I call at 9:15 Am, 10:30 Am, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:15 PM every day.. I let the phone ring 20 - 25 times and NO ONE PICKS UP !!! So work out the math - 7 days x 5 times a day to set up an appointment = 35 calls to book an appointment and NO ONE ANSWERS!!! I finally went to a walk-in clinic right down the road on Danforth. Was seen right away, no issues. And they still have the nerve to call and write asking for donations !. What for....to hire competent staff??????? read more

Broke my elbow and was advised by a clinic Dr. to go to the Emergency Room for xrays. Went to TEGH because it's close to home, and was prepared for a long wait. Was pleasantly surprised to have seen a triage nurse, had X-rays and be fitted with a temporary sling and have an appointment booked for a fracture clinic within two hours. The staff was pretty friendly - my only concern is that I'm not able to see a fracture clinic Dr. until Friday - 6 days after my injury. Otherwise a solid hospital - perhaps not as updated and modern and Sunnybrook or St. Mikes but still did a great job. read more

Have nothing but praise for this Hospital. My husband was admitted early March for a mass! The prep assessment was the most organized of any hospital I've been in the last few years! He was put in a room the assessing nurse, pharmacist , anesthesiologist, and internist came to see him! The day is surgery was well organized as well with a waiting room for families. His post operative care was excellent! We have high praise for the nurses and axillary staff on the surgical post operative ward. We had contact with cleaners, nursing assistants, student nurses, a nursing supervisor, a nurse practitioner and his surgeon as well as his interns and residents. The hospital ward was well staffed, clean, they kept the patients well hydrated and everyone was kind and took excellent care of my husband. The only complaint I have is with parking which cannot be helped as the hospital is in the middle of an addition. read more

On October 24th I was in Toronto East General (now renamed Michael Garron Hospital, please note, Yelp!) as an outpatient for a colonoscopy and gastroscopy. I arrived as scheduled 40 minutes before the procedure and registered on the main floor. But it was only when I got up to the 6th floor that I was handed one of those medical questionnaires asking what medical conditions do you have, what operations have you had, what medications do you take, what are you allergic to. I find that at the best of times, these questionnaires take a lot of concentration for you to remember everything sitting awkwardly with no desk balancing the clipboard in your lap. If you know anything about having a colonoscopy, you will know that your colon must be as clear as possible for the doctor to successfully perform the procedure. Of necessity you have to take 2 powerful laxatives, Pico-Salax and Dulcolax, which are meant to continue working on your colon right up until the procedure. So picture I am in acute intestinal discomfort and THIS is the time the idiots at Toronto East General Hospital choose to inconvenience and further stress me by giving one of these obnoxious medical questionnaires. Hello, it's 2016, people. Why isn't all this information already on file from when I initially consulted the surgeon on your hospital's staff? Why can't my medical files be uploaded from Humber River Regional Hospital instead of me handwriting this same info again and again without even a desk to sit at? Why in God's name couldn't they get this information at some point earlier in the procedure, not when I'm having to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes? I suddenly needed to do just that again. I had to abruptly throw the clipboard and pen to the floor and ask the 2 nurses at the counter where the nearest bathroom was. When I came back, livid with rage and embarrassment, I asked these 2 ladies whether they thought that having a questionnaire completed by a person immediately before a colonoscopy was the best time to ask them to do this. At first they told me they didn't know about the colonoscopy, they only knew I was having a gastroscopy (!) This poor communication didn't inspire me with confidence, especially since the gastroscopy info sheet which they'd just handed me said I was to have no hard candy or gum that morning. They were informing me of this way too late, because on coming into the hospital lobby I had bought a pack of gum to chew because my mouth was parched from fasting for hours for the colonoscopy, which wasn't scheduled till 2:00 pm. So I fretted about that and fretted about whether I'd answered the questionnaire properly because I wasn't able to concentrate under the circumstances. The two nurses agreed that the hospital shouldn't have given me the questionnaire right before the colonoscopy like that and that they had mentioned it to hospital administrators before, but that I had better complain as well "because no one ever listens to us!" By the time my surgeon saw me I was really upset. My surgeon assured me that my chewing gum wouldn't affect the gastroscopy (so why did the info sheet say you shouldn't do that?) and she also said she already had all my medical information on file. "I suppose the hospital wanted their own copy of your medical information." My question is WHY? Why did Toronto East General Hospital put me through this and make everything so much more stressful and why was everything so poorly planned and badly communicated? I have the distinct impression of an administration out of touch with patient care and completely uncaring. read more

SHAME ON YOU TEGH!!!!!! This is the 3rd time ive left after waiting 4+ hours.. I walked in tonight at 1130pm, waiting room was empty. Got registered fast, sent to another waiting room, then time just ticks by with no doctor available to see people. Seems they wait till there is 30+ people crammed into the wait room, coughing and spreading their various organisms. No blood work taken with indicators of a bad infection, staff that are more into having a little pow wow talking amongst themselves, big surprise. Last time I was there for 16hours after admitting in with chest pains, the last 2 hours waited were for blood-work to come back, all the while the results had been at the nurses desk, all they had to do was say 'your good, go home' that took 2hrs!! ?? REALLY? My daughter was born there, emergency c-section, the room my wife was in had dust and God only knows what falling from the ceiling vent onto my 1 day old little girl. This hospital is disgusting, they do not care how long you wait, and take it as a personal insult if you ask 'how long to see the doctor' even if you have been waiting for hours. Dont waste precious time and go to a real hospital like St. Mike's. Last time I went there, even though out of the way, I was talking to a doctor in 25mins, which is exactly how it should be. My sister received kind considerate care when she arrived having broken her wrist. From the ER staff on a Saturday night to the surgical team the next day, I can't say how impressed we were. As she is a high functioning developmentally challenged person her personality is bright and sparkling. Like begets like. Thanks MGH staff and doctors! She was not scared and is grateful for all the attention and just plain good people skills that helped make that experience non threatening even though she'd never been a patient before. the hospital doctors are so unresponsive... my mother was admitted sunday and i have been calling all day today (Monday) for an update about my mother's ultrasound results. i called the nurses and left messages to follow-up... no response. i also went to visit my mother after work and there were no doctors on the Acute unit. The nurse that was looking after my mother was nice, but where are the doctors??? and why is there no doctor on the floor at night?? at least that's what I was told when i called back at 9:30pm today. so disappointing :( read more

Note: this is only about the Outpatient Mental Health Services I don't know about other places that have OHIP covered mental health services in hospitals, but this is one of the worst, if not the worst, I've experienced. Even if you show up early for your appointment time, usually you are taken at least 20 minutes after your scheduled appointment, usually around 30 minutes, and at least a couple times 45 minutes to an hour. It's also hard to get a question answered and the reception for that section of the hospital seem to generally have relatively poor oral communication skills in that they mumble and are inefficient and disorganized. It is often hard to reach the therapist I had, even during normal working hours, sometimes it takes at least 3 days to return your calls. Plus the therapist I had changed two of my three medications for my issues and tried to encourage me to go off a couple of those medications, with disastarous results, and added one that really made me have a bad temper, while my original meds except for my antidepressant (the one I wanted changed) were working fine. Stay away from here if you can for mental health services. For other things, they've been pretty good. read more

it seems to be a hit or miss, depending on who you have to see at this hospital. i was diagnosed with cancer and required a mastectomy last month. the surgeon and his team of nurses and doctors are superb: friendly, accommodating, chatty, and understanding. other than that, the place leaves much to be desired. the registration people are OK. my pre-op for surgery, which is required for every surgery patient, took about 3.5 hours wait just for me to see a nurse and fill out paper work about medical history and take some swabs, which took the nurse less than 20 mins. people in the pre-op clinic could careless about why you were there. on surgery day, waiting for surgery was like being purgatory - the waiting room is depressing, the nurse that put IV in you is only nice enough, and they ignore telling you how long your wait is. waking up in the recovery room after surgery is a mess too. no niceties to be had there, even though i think it's probably the most crucial moment to get some courtesy from the staff. i actually had two people trying to argue about who was taking me to my room because they both wanted to go on break after! the facilities are overall pretty run-down, i'm sure they're making the most out of what they have, but it seems like the place had never been updated. the lighting is horrible on every floor. some bathrooms smell of urine, and furnitures are super old, but everything is tolerably clean. and the patient ward where i was, was super crowded with equipments. it seems like the rooms were never designed to house all the standard hospital equipments they have now. i went there because it's close to where i live, but i having gone through this, i think i would choose elsewhere if i need another operation. read more

This is the worst hospital in the city of Toronto. If you go to their emergency room, be prepared to wait for an eternity. They will shuffle you from waiting room to waiting room, even if you are the only person there. It is as if there is one doctor, maybe, who sees patients occasionally, while for the most part watching television, or doing something else other than treating patients. They got a bunch of money recently, but this hospital still sucks. I went in to this emergency room with a serious condition, requiring immediate medical care. There was not a single other patient in sight, yet the one person who would give me an estimate of when I would see a doctor, told me it would take several hours. I took Uber to Mount Sinai, a real hospital run by professionals. The people who run this hospital should be embarrassed, but I think they are more focused on their salaries. read more

My mother was very ill, without sharing with me I discovered she had fainted. I brought her to the hospital and her blood pressure was very low. The triage nurse was fantastic, put my mom at ease, she knew my mom needed to be seen right away but was very relaxed, chatting. We were sent right through and the nurses were incredible, from start to finish we were there over six hours, as mom was dehydrated and needed IV fluids. They were caring, supportive and helpful. The doctors were equally caring, soft spoken, including the resident who was so caring. They were thorough and showed compassion. At one point during a shift change we had two caring nurses both checking in. When we were finally discharged I was told more than once or come back if any other symptoms presented, or if she had a turn for the worse. I was so impressed! Kudos to you all knowing you have the hardest job In the world, you helped us through a difficult time with empathy and compassion. THANK YOU! read more

I went to Toronto East hospital at 10:40PM with a bad cut / laceration. At triage, I was told there was around a 2 hour wait. I waited 6 hours and wast still not seen. I then asked for an update and was told that there was only one doctor and that I was looking at at least 4 more hours. I left. Staff was friendly but there are obviously staffing and communication issues there. I have had to take my kids there on occasion over the years and have had good care with long waits as well but this was excessive. read more

There is a lot of bad things going on in this hospital that don't get put out. They always like to show how they are caring and helping the elderly. You can say this hospital operates more like a factory and that the staff could care less about your well being as long as its what they want to hear. I remembered two patients getting away from the hospital recently and one of them getting shoot by a police officer. But there are a few good staff there, but I'm sure they are afraid to speak up of the chaos as for fear of job security. Of all, I rather be at St. Michaels or Toronto Western. Their staff are considerate and do not have the attitude problems you'll see at Toronto East. Their image saving press releases only cover so much. read more

This week my son presented with an apparent broken collarbone (which we explained to the emerg nurse) and waited nearly two hours before getting pain relief (much too long). I thought he was going to pass out from the pain. The nurse in tri-age fumbled trying to put a sling on him and I finally had to tell her to stop as it was clear my son was in terrible pain and she should have known he could not move his shoulder until he got pain relief. After the x-ray confirmed that the snap he heard was indeed a break, he was put in a sling and sent home.Even though I asked for pain killers leaving, they said he won't need them and tylenol would be fine - WRONG! He's a kid and can't suck up the pain like an adult. He could not sleep as he was in so much pain. All I asked for was tylenol 3 in case he needed it and we were refused. I have lots of stories about the bad care there - it's such a needless shame. When he was a baby and I asked for breastfeeding help in the middle of the night the nurse said to give him a bottle. When I said no I want help breastfeeding she said don't you want your baby to have anything all night - guilt is what I got not the help I needed and this was within 24 hours of giving birth when you are completely exhausted. My mother came to this hospital on November 4th for pain in her neck and arm. After an all nighter in the emergency department they did a CT scan and a ultrasound which found gall stones in her liver and she had pancreatitis. They admitted her and preformed two procedures to remove the gall stones. The first time they did the procedure it caused internal bleeding and they had to abort the procedure. They did it again the next day and were unsuccessful. They told her they would try it again on the monday and if it was not successful she would be moved to another hospital that is more experienced with this sort of procedure. On the sunday my mother complained to her nurse that she was having chest pains which the nurse reported as "indigestion" in the early afternoon. By 4 pm she was having major chest pains and trouble breathing. She called two of my aunts and my father to tell them she thought she was having a heart attack and they needed to come to the hospital right away. My aunt had asked her if she told the nurse what was wrong and my mother said that the nurse was there but she wasn't doing anything. We live close by so after my mother spoke to my father he came to the hospital within 10 minutes. My mother asked my Father for a glass of water and the nurse told him to stay with her and that she would get the water. Within moments my mother went into cardiac arrest. A code blue was called and a large group of doctors and nurses came into her room. It took 26 minutes to revive her. She lost her heartbeat and stopped breathing a second time and it took another 4 minutes to revive her a second time. She suffered anoxic brain injury due to lack of oxygen and was stablized with a ventilator and medications to keep her heart beating. My mother died seven days later. She was only 56 years old and did not have a history of heart problems. The fact that she had time to call three people to tell them she was having a heart attack and no one at the hospital did anything to help her except get her a glass of water speaks volumes about the care offered at this hospital. I am not a doctor or a nurse but if someone told me they were having a hard time breathing and had chest pains I would give them some oxygen and get someone that knows what they are doing. I no longer have a mother because of this hospitals negligence and I would not trust them to check me for a cold. My advice to everyone is to stay away from this place at all costs. It could cost you or your loved ones life. I would give this hospital no stars but in order to post this i have to offer at least one. Please take this story to heart the next time you have to go to the hospital. Yes it might be close and convient but trust me its worth it to go some where else. read more

My mom was admitted to TEGH this week, a woman with advanced Alzheimer's who was severely dehydrated. The staff simply lack the training to deal with her. In fact, other than having her on an IV to hydrate her, she is basically ignored. After the first overnight, my sister came in the next morning to find my mother with her diaper down to her knees, very wet, with feces all over the place. When I sister complained, she was told that they could not change her because she is so aggressive. There is a sign posted outside her door to warn anyone entering because the staff have labelled her as very aggressive. If they had any training at all, they would know that this aggression is associated with fear. When we ask for something, the staff is accommodating, but it seems as if they look to us for direction. They seem unconcerned that she is not eating or drinking anything. Meals are not suitable, and there are no meal replacements (such as Boost or Ensure) offered to giver her additional calories. She has lost so much weight since she was admitted. Whatever little nourishment she is getting is coming from home. I am not concerned that the hospital is old dingy and depressing if the staff was more capable. There has only been one person who has really showed any interest in her as a human being. My mother battled a lengthily illness in East General Hospital. This was very stressful on her and the family, when you are old , sick they try to force the family to A DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDER. Even if the patient wants to continue living, they try to force your hand and you are at their mercy. they have the final say, THIS IS WRONG AND HAS TO CHANGE . We went through it over a year of my mother being in and out of the hospital, with them simply telling us they will not try to save her. She suffered abuse from the PSWs , and every time she was rushed in by the ambulance , she was so scared they would not save her, she fought us all on going. We successfully rerouted her twice to other hospitals nearby and they help her and she recovered and went home in better condition. East General hospital has to be one of the worse hospitals for elderly care in Toronto. The doctors have no compassion along with lack of skilled care and the nursing staff has no interest at all in the patient. The night before my mother passed away, the Doctor informed us she would not come out and he would not try to save her, the next night she died. Hours before my mother had told me no one even comes in the room to check on me. I questioned it, but yet when I left just long enough to go home and pick up a few things and return, the hospital called and said, "your mother is dong well" when they did finally check on her it was to late. They didn't even call me to inform me. When I got back to the hospital she had dies and I questioned what had happened they had no idea they said. Their statement was simply "we don't know ". I now know they pulled all her medications and ignored her till she died. read more
