As a very health conscious individual (read hypochondriac) Napiers was always going to be a winner…read morefor me. Napiers was established in Edinburgh in 1860 and this store on Bristo Place is where it all started. Victorian botanist Duncan Napier was the magician behind these health potions and up until the 1970's Napiers was passed from generation to generation as a family run business. After the death of the last family member in the line of Napiers to carry out this tradition the business closed down and it wasn't until the 1990's that it was revived - thank goodness for that! Many of the old recipes were found so the store is still true to the original. All medicine here is herbal medicine so it's reassuring that everything is natural. I used to take paracetamol whenever I had the slightest ache or pain but after living in Germany for a year I was a bit lost as you can't even buy paracetamol/cough syrup/ibuprofen anything medicinal without a prescription, but they do have an abundance of shops like Napiers and I found many of the natural products actually worked better and even when I went to the doctors I was given natural medicine as a prescription and a list of health foods to eat/foods to avoid. I guess it's a bit more informative than going to the doctors here and just getting crap that knocks you out. Due to the history and this being the original Napiers store, this branch has a great lived in atmosphere, they have little potted plants outside surrounding the doorway and inside it's bright and airy. The staff here are also very knowledgeable so whatever your ailment they will be able to recommend something for you. This branch is a dispensary but also doubles up as a clinic where you can get treatments such as massage, acupuncture etc.

You can come…read morehere for acupuncture, massage, counseling, hypnotherapy, nutritional advice, beauty therapy, etc. It's also host to the Natural Fertility Centre, which was recommended to me when I was struggling to conceive. For your initial appointment you meet with their Conception Coach (Dee), who is brilliant. Having worked for the NHS she can help you navigate through their treatments and processes which seem to be as convoluted as possible. Dee provides a lot of practical advice that your GP just isn't likely to even be aware of, and creates a plan of action. For me, that was acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. One of the biggest hurtles with fertility is feeling like you are in a situation over which you have absolutely no control. NHS processes take a *long* time and appointments are short so you don't usually have enough time to chat through what you're going through. The Natural Fertility Centre gave me back a certain feeling of control, helped me to understand my diagnosis and have someone other than Dr Google to rely on for advice in diet and nutrition to help lessen my hormonal imbalance while simultaneously going through a battery of tests with the NHS. If nothing else, the NFC helped me maintain something of a grip on my sanity, while also helping me to improve my health through it all. My enormous wiggling belly and graceful waddle are a testament to to the fact that I must have done something right.

This has been my first experience with Osteopathy and I didn't quite know what to expect. With a long line injuries, both major and minor, and being in chronic pain, I was ready to try something new. I noticed a difference from the very first session. David is amazing at helping relive pain and helping you to work towards longer term solutions. He takes every care in making sure you are understanding what he's doing and why. He never rushes you out or make you feel as if you are an inconvenience, like many people can do. I highly recommend visiting Soma, even if you just have headaches occasionally or a small back pain that you think will just go away on it's own. It could be a part of something larger and better to get it dealt with. I receive therapeutic massages form Claire - and am all the better for it. She works in conjunction with my Osteopath sessions and we ensure that each session helps me to reach my ultimate goals to improve various muscles and long term trauma. My last session alone has given me full range of motion in my neck again. She has a great personality and is very skilled at what she does, often sending you away with things you can do on your own to continue improving. All of the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and are willing to go that extra step to make sure your visits are comfortable and suited to your needs.
