one of my favourite luxuries that i treat myself to each month is a really good massage. being a…read morekeen runner means i put my body through a lot on top of the fact i'm stuck in a desk job 5 days a week so my muscles are pretty sore sometimes. finding a really good massage therapist can be tricky as i often find that the pressure isn't what i'm looking for or that the massage just doesn't quite get all my knots out. however Knotstressed Therapies offers a huge range of massage with really excellent therapists and i thoroughly enjoyed my treatment last week! I came across Knotstressed as they very generously donated a gift voucher to a raffle i was holding for my fundraising (side note, i'm raising money in aid of Mind for the london marathon in april 2016!) when looking to book a massage out with my usual therapist i decided to give this place a try as the prices were quite reasonable and it was nearby my flat. booking is fairly easy, i dropped them an email with what i was looking for and they came back with a list of times to try to suit my availibility. i asked for a 60 minute massage initially but they explained i would be better taking a 75 minute slot so that the therapist would have enough time to discuss my massage needs and still provide a 60 minute massage. quite good advice as this meant i could talk about what sports i do and the areas i was having problems with so they could focus on that. my massage was heavenly and it's the first time in months my shoulders don't feel like a bunch of balled up knots attached to my ears! the whole experience was so incredibly relaxing as the new location is done up really nicely. it looks like they have a room for yoga and exercise classes to the front and then treatment rooms at the back. the room was nice and cosy and warm which makes such a difference when you're on a massage table just covered by a towel! there is also water and hot drinks on offer in the reception area if you come early or want to sit and relax after your treatment. a really lovely business with a huge range of services! i can't wait to book in for another massage :)

Here is different. Steph chatted with me for a time before the massage to understand what I wanted from it. Already off to a great start. She also asked about what excerise I do which is actually quite relevant! Basically I said that I wanted a relaxing massage. It didn't take her long to say that my muscles really needed ironing out so I said for her to crack on. I can't tell you how relaxed and loose I felt the next day. She was intuitive and new exactly what I needed even though I didnt! Great service. Would really recommend this place for a great massage.

I suffer from massive back pain and I was able to book a 30 minute pressure relief shoulders back and neck massage. The lady gave me a fantastic thai massage. She knew exactly where I was in pain without me having to tell her! I feel so much better and the congestion I was feeling in my head is gone, I can move my back and neck now! Every place has its own group of therapists, some specialise in one area of physical and personal well-being. Active Health has been on my radar for a long time now. I made the step today to pay them a visit. Mainly for one reason: Briana Eades. Back in 2010 she was one of the leading masseuses that was treating my Sciatica and lower back problems. Her approach was novel, personal and very effective. She introduced me to new ways of experiencing Massage Therapy. The Deep Tissue Massage sessions are done with clear expertise and skill. Clearly she does give it her all, but stays bright and joyful throughout! I suspect that Briana has possibly 'used' me to expand her knowledge during my treatment as on her suggestions I was introduced to the G5 Machine (deep tissue) and Manual Lymphatic Draining (a type of massage that helps the lymph nodes drain and is incredible relaxing!) and this only makes her a very versatile member of the Active Health Team. From their website: "Briana is qualified in a number of massage therapy techniques including Remedial, Sports, Deep Tissue, Swedish/Relaxation, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Aromatherapy including Raindrop Technique." She takes detailed notes during the sessions and will adjust the therapy to suit the current need and wants of the client. On arrival I was asked to fill out the personal contact details and the physical issues you need assistance with. Some medical details and insurance details are also asked for. The massage room I had was of an adequate size, heated and no distractions. (well there is some classical music in the background). The table was comfortable and had an warming pad to avoid getting cold. Nice touch. After the initial consultation - as we shared a history it wasn't that long of a chat- we got straight into it. Working on some problem points on my legs and lower back, some tension release around the neck & shoulders and to finish with the Lymphatic Drainage. I felt reborn! I will definitely make another appointment, and as I understand they have evening times available too. This session was an hour and cost £42 - well worth every penny!

Unfortunately as a recent graduate it was a little out of my price range and too frivolous for someone on a budget. For me however, a leg wax prior to holiday time is a must. Given the unpleasantness of the treatment it was (almost) a pleasant experience. In a calm, clean, quiet salon I was lead to a warmly lit waiting room and offered a drink. The well groomed receptionist and beauticians weren't as aloof as those in other salon despite and my waxer chatted to me all the way through as though we were old friends. The treatment itself was fantastic as the woman explained they use hot wax that they rip off rather than using cloth strips. This makes for a cleaner, easier and (marginally) less painful wax that lasted longer than others I have had. This is a more expensive place than I would usually go but worth it as it was a top quality job. They do give a student discount but I would say this is a place for the people of Edinburgh who have more disposable income than the average student. My plan is to ask for Zen gift vouchers at Christmas and head back for the pomegranate facial!

I first booked in for HD Brows which by the way is so worth it. But now i regularly have a sports massage , myriad facial and my hd eyebrows done. It is a bit more expensive than what i usually pay but the service of the receptionist, the beauticians doing the treatment are of such high standard. I now use their products on my face and it is a big difference on my skin. They do block bookings which can save you a bit of money in the long run, student discount and vouchers to purchase. I would definetly recommend this salon if your looking for a real pampering session, they also have branches over in Hanover street and Teviot Place.
