My experience with Dr. Ashlyn Hankey and her office was profoundly disappointing and left me feeling disregarded, unsupported, and concerned about the quality of care and communication I received. I sought treatment for mental health concerns, but felt that my primary concerns were not adequately addressed. Dr. Ashlyn Hankey prescribed medications that I understood were intended to treat mental health conditions other than the condition for which I was seeking treatment. I am familiar with these medications and their uses because I have colleagues who work in the medical field. When I questioned why those medications had been prescribed and how they related to my symptoms, I felt that she could not provide a clear or satisfactory explanation. This left me feeling excluded from decisions about my own care and concerned that the medications were not appropriate for the issues I had sought help with. I also felt that Dr. Ashlyn Hankey did not take accountability for the treatment decisions or communication problems that contributed to my concerns.
At my final visit, when I questioned her prescribing of what I believed were the wrong medications, Dr. Ashlyn Hankey abruptly decided that she would no longer treat me. She stated that she intended to treat only patients with ADHD rather than continuing to address the condition for which I had sought help. This was the visit at which she ended my care, and the decision came unexpectedly, leaving me without clear guidance about next steps or how to transition to an appropriate provider. Her manner felt unresponsive, and I found her bedside manner deeply lacking in compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism.
Communication with the office was similarly frustrating. Scheduling and billing issues were not handled clearly or consistently. The office told me that certain visits would be dismissed, including the visit Dr. Ashlyn Hankey was unable to attend because she had undergone surgery on her face. Despite that discussion, I later received billing statements and learned that charges had been submitted fraudulently and pursued for visits that I understood would be dismissed. The billing did not reflect what had been discussed with me. I was concerned that the billing practices were inconsistent with the agreement and conversations I had with the office, its billing department, and the office manager. I did not receive a clear explanation or adequate notice before these charges were pursued, and I was especially concerned to learn that the balance had reportedly been sent to collections after I had been told it would be dismissed.
I am currently unable to schedule further care with any other medical practice affiliated with or related to that practice because of the disputed bill, which was fraudulently submitted and improperly pursued. The bill has reportedly been placed in collections, and the resulting dispute has prevented me from being seen by another provider within that practice or any related practice. As a result, I have been unable to obtain necessary ongoing mental health care while the balance remains unresolved. This has added significant stress and interfered with my ability to seek appropriate treatment.
When I contacted the office, the response felt unresponsive and unproductive, further reinforcing my impression that patient concerns were not being taken seriously. Based on my experience, I felt that the office prioritized questionable billing practices over patient care and mental health support. The lack of transparency and communication raised serious concerns for me. Patients deserve clear explanations, informed consent, respectful treatment, reliable continuity of care, and transparent billing, not to feel ignored or pressured while trying to obtain mental health services.
Because of the seriousness of these concerns, I intend to submit complaints to the appropriate state medical licensing board and the Better Business Bureau, and all other relevant agencies or oversight organizations, including my health insurance company, the state insurance regulator, consumer protection authorities, and any applicable patient advocacy or professional regulatory bodies. I will also seek guidance regarding whether the care and billing practices I experienced warrant further review for possible professional negligence, incompetence, or other violations.
I encourage prospective patients to ask detailed questions about medications, treatment goals, follow-up plans, appointment policies, cancellation fees, insurance claims, and billing practices. If you do not feel heard, respected, or adequately informed, consider seeking a second opinion or transferring care to another provider. read more
