I'm pleased to be giving the Cornershop Barber Shop, its' first review in 2016 and only second in…read morethe past 12 months, and I'm pleased to announce, it is still quite a nice place to go for a haircut. As regular readers of my reviews will know, I'm with Jonny Q and Michael B on this one, I hate having my haircut done and hate the awkwardness of chit-chat with my barber, and just want to get in and out of a place, with minimal effort, this place is right by Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter, opposite the Old Koffeepot on the corner of Hilton Street. It is quite a nice place, and it charges £10 for a haircut which isn't bad considering I'm used to paying £15 at Supercuts and Kim-Creative.Com in the Arndale. The barber was nice enough, he wasn't as friendly as I've seen before at the other places listed above, but he did do a quick haircut, upon request at 6 minutes. Overall, the haircut was okay until he used the scissors, it felt like he went on for hours, being really heavy handed, cutting big chunks of hair with the scissors, and then banging the comb on my head near enough every-time, which shown hints of aggression and perhaps it being too rushed, this probably felt like the longest part of my haircut, even though looking back it was probably nothing more than 1/3 of the time taken, but if you would of told me that part of the haircut, took double what the whole haircut taken, I would have believe you. I got a decent haircut as well, which was much better than other cuts I have had before, but perhaps still not as good as Supercuts in the Manchester Arndale. It is also open on a Sunday between 12 and 6pm which is handy, and when I visited, it didn't seem really busy and I got seated and my haircut straight away. I noticed they did have a few newspapers on the table for people to look at while waiting. My search for a barbershop has been a long one, I've devoted a long list to find one on Yelp, I hope now my search is over. I hope this place doesn't suffer with "Second-time barber blues", I continue to get a lot so for now, I feel it only deserves a 3. UPDATE: I now feel Cornershop deserves a single one star rating mainly down to a huge decline in service and the overall finished haircut of late, the fact they don't do appointments and often leave you waiting with the staff not seeming overly friendly makes the situation worse also.

Anyone who regularly reads my reviews will know my constant battle to find a good haircut with…read moreminimal effort. Not only do I struggle with "barber talk" but the fact that it usually takes a good hour to get my pretty short hair cut makes me want to spend that time doing something much more fun. That usually results in me carrying what can only be described as a birds nest around on my head for a much more desired time period than is acceptable! But for no more - yesterday at the Barbers on Stevenson square opposite Koffee pot, I was in and out within 20 minutes, loved my new haircut and it only cost me £10. All the guys working there were pretty friendly and up for a chat about the local bar scene and that suits me just fine. If you're after a quick cut, walk in service then this place is just for you.

SuperCuts is one of those companies, which surprises me with its' level of success, being a barber…read moreshop which has gone international, it has over 2,000 stores in the US alone. I always have found Supercuts to be a little expensive, charging £14.95 for a dry cut but for a city center, it is reasonable, especially considering my local barber at Kim-Creative was out, and she normally charges that anyway. The woman who served me was quite quick, and got me seated straight away. I told her about my past luck with barbers and she told me to let her know if she caught me, which was kind, and she also tried to have it as quick as possible, while also trying to make it "still look good" It is quite a nice salon in general, but is near enough the typical Supercuts layout. This SuperCuts is in a good location in the Manchester Arndale, and can be found on the top floor fairly close to Currys PC World and The Food Court. She got my haircut done quickly, and she done a good job of it too, for me to actually get numerous compliments, she tried her best not to "catch" me with the blades, as they normally seem to do, although she did catch me a few times. She also didn't soak my head in water, like the flooding of The River Thames, as I've had before which also shown that she was actually qualified. This was my first time in SuperCuts, and I was very pleased so I'm happy to award 3 stars, which is right on the brink of a 4 star review, which will be awarded if my 2nd visit maintains this standard, and I don't suffer from "2nd visit blues" as I have had at Jack Edward in Middleton, Mad Luck in Rochdale and various other barbers, so I do want to make sure a 4 star rating is deserved first. UPDATE: Due to huge inconsistencies in service from different members of staff, which could include treatments such as shaves to sometimes be denied or accepted and priced anywhere between £3.95 and £5.95, while also considering this and the quality of the finished cut and the service from certain staff members, it's hard to even know what you're getting from Supercuts anymore, and that's if you ever do get it, and the price you're getting it for, so sadly this has become much poorer recently and warrants a single one-star rating, I'm sorry to report. Being unable to make appointments and the fact you have to sit in for wait, where even one could be expected to wait an hour for a treatment expected to last 1/10 of that time is ridiculously stupid.

When I first came here I was continiously insulted by the hair dresser how horrible my hair was , and how it needed cutting from waist length to below my shoulders...and when he finished he curled it so i couldnt see the end result. Since then I have brought my partner in (who has long hair) and was treated so lovely, and they did a great job. I came in again and got served by the lady...wow what a lovely difference. This time she kept complimenting my hair and knew exactly what I wanted. She knew I was trying to keep it long so she skillfully layered my hair so the snapped ends were removed. I felt completely relaxed and trusted her which is rare in my case. She also showed me the back ,recommended products and styled my hair beautifully..just a shame it was raining outside! The prices start at £14 for a dry cut, £20 for a cut and wash and anything up to £38 for a cut , wash and blow dry. I just go in for a dry cut, there is no booking system so I recommend you go before 5pm as a lot of people use it when they finish work.

The staff seem really friendly, if a little bit eccentric. I know this as they often sell second hand books outside the salon. Original idea, I suppose! It is £7 for a gent's haircut and a bargainous £7 for a trim for us ladies. I am pretty sure you wouldn't get a trim for any cheaper than that without asking your housemate to do it with the kitchen scissors. My housemate always gets his barnet cut here, and was very upset on one occasion when he had to go somewhere else due to K-Style being closed. On putting the name of this salon into google, up popped a BBC Sport article - apparently Freddie Flintoff, Ian Botham and Mike Atherton have all had their hair cut at K-Style and barber Ron Keeling has even been on tour with the England cricket team!

Kirsten is right, this is by far the most eccentric hairdresser I have ever set foot in! However,…read morethat didn't detract in the least from a great haircut and home styling advice for a rock bottom £7. For Manchester, £7 is cheap - even your run-of-the-mill Manchester barber will charge £12 for a basic gents dry cut. And £5 saved will buy lunch from Barbakan Delicatessen, Unicorn or a huge amount of fruit and veg from the bargainous Khawaja Brothers Mini Market, then you can borrow some books from Chorlton Public Library, etc - and all of this centred around a tiny area, saving you time as well as money whilst...enjoying yourself in chilled out Chorlton! Chorlton has a reputation of being home to a diverse and happy family of quirky businesses and community activities, but I think K-Style would give Wowie Zowie, The Bar and any of them a run for their money! The barber chairs are so vintage they are back in fashion, and Ron Keeling's braces and bald head mark him as also being from an earlier era. Framed pictures of celebrities and signed sporting memorabilia adorn the walls, large ceramic batsman and umpire figurines stand 'not out' on the mantelpiece and union jack bunting finishes off the look. As I informed my stylist what sort of cut I was after, I was slightly taken aback when Mr. K interjected offering me a haircut like his, patting his bald pate for emphasis! The Iranian stylist who cut my hair is equally amusing, but also a gentle and highly skilled barber. I gratefully received his offer of a mug of water - he'd noticed how hot I was, how nice! Lastly, goodbye side parting; hello forward comb and spiked up - I rocked back out onto the Chorlton streets, K-Style! Disclaimer: K-Style also has a pleasant Iranian lady stylist who will simply cut your hair!
