I see there are several older reviews where communication was noted as an issue, my experience was totally opposite with communication being a strong point. Afters the Bug's warranty ran out, I realized the dealerships were very costly and always found more wrong then what was the current problem. H&B has always been upfront with what repairs are needed to get you rolling again. Their costs are moderate and the technicians are pretty precise when they troubleshoot the problem. Only gave one star because you have to. Lester- who I assume is a co-owner, seems to be an okay guy. Paul- the other guy is a piece of work. If it is possible to have negative customer service skills- he wins. He is nasty, and acts as if he could care less if you are a satisfied customer or not. I used this shop in the past and was relatively satisfied, most of the time. But I preferred to work with Lester. My son just had some work there on his Audi, and unbeknownst to him, Paul decided to throw away his belly pan because it was attached to the frame with zip ties. The belly pan was fine. Did not ask permission, just threw it away. When he was called on it, and what he was going to do about it, he told my son they didn't need his business, were not going to work on his car again, and that he should f#&k Off! I've taken two VWs here and Lester is fantastic. Up front with me, found my issues quickly, and everything was priced reasonably. Told me what to expect in the coming months with regular maintenance (back brakes need to be done soon) and gave me pricing. Found an issue Checkered Flag VW caused. CF replaced my clutch and forgot to bolt my catalytic converter back in. I told Lester I heard a rattle under the car before getting an oil change and he found it and bolted it back in at no cost. The other guy could use a lesson or two in how to talk to customers (seriously guys, address this) but I've only dealt with Lester with actually working on my car. Not a big enough issue for me to drop a star. For those complaining about Lester being informal, I appreciate that because he talks to you like a human being. Called this location based off a recommendation from another shop for a quote. Customer service rep told me I was "stupid" and "retarted" for asking questions regarding Cat removal within an exhaust system. He notified me it was very illegal and they are unable to fulfill this request. I accepted the information but was still met with disrespectful comments and personal interpretation of his views on car modifications and horsepower. They are the experts, hence why I called. In no ways was I arguing or trying to discredit the experience of the technician I was speaking with. I would definitely look at another shop that will supply information in a respectful manner and explain how the law works to "kids". Took my 2015 GTI in for EPC light . Greeted by Paul, the most arrogant, smug service advisor I have ever met. He would not even look at me when talking. I was just trying to pass on some info that I had got from forums in our initial conversation but he did not want to hear anything I had to say. My better half just wanted the car fixed so we left it with them. Paul called the next day and said the car was ready and the price was 386.00 They had already done the work without even calling us. No problem as we were glad it was fixed, or so we thought. On the way to Chesapeake, my wife tells me that Paul called again and that he changed the price to 686 dollars. We could not believe it. We get to the office and he tells us that he forgot to add a part and the labor for part. He said he would take 10 percent off for his mistake. I was thoroughly pissed at this point, but we needed the car. We sat there for 4 minutes while he had a calculator trying to figure out what 10% of 686 is. He could not do it. He prints out a receipt for 631. We give him cash and he says Im gonna give you 40 of it back, so the total was 591, after he quoted us 386. I could not wait to get out of there. He was blabbing about the APR tune causing the issue. Had 60K miles on tune with no issues. Well, needless to say, I get 5 miles into the drive home and my car lights up like a Christmas tree. I don't thing he did a thing to my car. He ripped us off for 590. I knew this guy was bad news as soon as I first spoke with him. Read the rebuttals he makes when customer has negative experience with him. He is a total jerk. He can't spell, does not know the difference between ( there and their), and in that shop working on high end German vehicles. Trust me, this guy is a lout all the way. I did not meet Lester so I really can't say anything bad about him. I just wonder how these guys stay in business with this guy Paul making a first impression on customers. We ate the 600 dollars because I did not feel comfortable bringing the car back. Paul was getting ready to just throw parts at it and had no clue of what was going or what he was doing. It is pretty obvious that Lester must be the one with the real mechanical experience, but I don't know. . read more

And they were fast to get it done, unfortunately my warranty did not cover the part . And respectfully, HB mother works didn't make me pay for the check engine diagnostic. Manager should learn how to speak to customers in a professional manner, I am not your drinking buddy, I am a customer. My payed request was not met. Old, rusted hardware was reused instead of replaced with new. Was hoping to make this my go to shop, but now it's only there for last resort. Below is my rating breakdown; -Was my issue fixed? Yes, that earns 1 star. -Was I greeted with proper customer service from manager? No, apparently i'm the managers pal to be talked to like that. No star. -Was the work performed with quality? I brought my VW to this location to have work done to the electrical system. I actually had to have it towed there from another location that caused more damage to it while trying to fix a separate issue. Their work was cautious, thorough, and was done in a timely manner. The entire time it was there they kept me updated on everything that they were doing and what it meant. I will NEVER go to Checkered Flag VW again. Several years back my Gov't ID card fell behind the ashtray. I went to C flag where I bought the Passat. I must have been wearing my stupid sign that day. I asked a man at the Service Desk how much to get my card back. He said (w/ a straight face $250) - I'll have to drop the transmission to get back there. Flabbergasted I left. Several days later I was in the Greenbriar area and saw the H&B Motorwerks sign. I asked their mechanic the same question. W/o a word he went for a screwdrive and 2 mins later handed me my ID. The charge? $0! I can only conclude that the Checkered Flag servicewriter must be on commission or is either incompetent or dishonest. I wrote VW America. No answer from them. read more
