Very cool museum! The staff was incredibly friendly. Amazing history and great artifacts!

As a former Navy Leaguer, I have to admit that I have a weakness for our naval services. And Hawthorne, back in the day must have been something. Now it's a quiet little sleepy town. The only signs of life are the private contract employees with automatics weapons at the Front Gate. No Marines here. The Museum is also a nice piece of history, that unfortunately wasn't open as we came through town. The sight of those anti-aircraft guns and 16" shells caught our attention immediately. Wow My Three Star, "A-OK" Review reflects our limited ability to evaluate. Hopefully on our next trip they'll be open, so I can raise the rating and update the review.

Great place to visit between Reno and Las Vegas. Pay respect to our military. The gift shop did not seem overpriced. Friendly staff. Places like this are what makes America great. A respect for history.

Very sad to see Covid hit small towns like this forcing them to close their doors, some forever. We were passing through and hoped to see the museum but it was closed due to the governors order. But even closed there is so much cool stuff on grounds surrounding the building. We wandered through the lot and took some pictures. We will be back when this is all over to take a look inside. But it was worth the stop even closed.

The blighted desert outpost of Hawthorne pretty much owes its existence to the local US Army Depot, which stores its surplus munitions in dozens and dozens of creepy, molehill-like bunkers that blanket the surrounding desert. Driving into town is like an episode of the Twilight Zone -- Red-White-n-Blue everywhere, Stars-n-Stripes everything. Even the local tavern is painted in a USA! USA! motif. If you're driving a Prius, better take the Bypass route...all others come on down; you have arrived in The Most Patriotic City in America (TM). The crown jewels of the Army's collection are showcased at the Ordnance Museum, right on the main drag as you pass thru town. If you're into bombs, missiles, tanks, guns, bullets, grenades, torpedoes and other implements of destruction, you will totes dig this place -- they have tons of freaky shit on display, with plenty of interactive photo ops. Bring your aviators and do your best Gen. Patton; don't forget to hashtag #ShockNAwe! My own interest in ordnance lies strictly in the realm of aesthetics and Freudian symbology, so there was plenty to amuse me here, even tho the museum was closed at the time of my visit -- you can still look thru the windows and get the gist of it, plus there's a bunch o'weapons out front to play with. No matter your political bent, this museum is DEFINITELY worth a stop if you're passing thru Hawthorne. Afterward, stroll down the street for a drink at Joe's Tavern (the one with the USA! USA! motif) to discuss your impressions -- but be cool! This IS the Most Patriotic City in America; if they hear any kinda pinko talk coming out of your elitist Reno-Vegas mouth, they'll put a boot in your ass...it's the Amurrican Way! Alright now you sons-of-bitches, you know how I feel.

While passing through Hawthorne on the way to Carson City we noticed this museum and decided to stop and check it out. Admission is free, but donations are suggested. The museum is small (2 rooms) but packed with old missles, guns, and other old military and war relics. There are volunteers here to answer your questions and they were very knowledgeable and friendly. The museum isn't hard to spot when driving down the road because the front is lined with old missles. If you're passing through or in the area I'd recommend checking this place out if you like military artifacts or history

Familiar.

A gem hidden in a small town. The volunteers, who staff it are knowledgeable veterans. If you're traveling through Hawthorne, it should be a must-see. It's modest outside hides a treasure trove of memorabilia.

Examples of what is to see at this cool Muesem!

This place is large and has just about one of every type of every munitions they have at the depot. Great displays, free and knowledgable volunteers! A great stop on the way to Vegas.

The drive is partially paved, and mostly unpaved down a dirt road. There were a couple of cow gates to crossover, a few smaller rocks in the road. We traversed it in a Toyota Camry and were fine. A truck or SUV is ideal, but a sedan was completely workable. You are driving way out in the middle over nowhere then come of the hill and there is a rather large ghost town. We were COMPLETELY surprised at how large it was. Being a State Park there is a nominal entrance fee. See sign of posted prices in pictures! The park is very educational, historical, cool things to see! It is a great way to be outdoors walking and getting exercise without calling it exercise! There are both restrooms at the parking lot and then outhouses down near the hotel for use. There was a water fountain (we brought our own) I only saw that it was working if needed. This park is preserved as is for people to see. There are things on the ground to step over which are natural terrain like rocks and stuff and then there are items like chains to step over to prevent injury. An individual with serious mobility issues would have a hard time unless they utilized a wheelchair or mobility device of some sort. The paths that you walk on are dusty, plan on being dirty, it is a ghost town in nature!! There was a museum to enjoy. In the museum there was the option to purchase tickets to see the mill for $6 per person. We also saw a sign on the church that there would be a talk shortly. There was an indoor area to sit on benches and watch a movie about the history of Bodie. It was neat seeing some of the items inside the buildings like original wall paper, toys, toddler potty chairs, vintage furniture, old tools, wagons... If you are looking for a great way to enjoy a drive, exercise, family time, history, and see the largest preserved ghost town then this is for you! Would we return: ABSOLUTELY.. I was sad I didn't know about this before and didn't have more time to explore and do the Mill tour!! We only spent about an hour there. I'd love to plan appropriately and spend the better part of a day here. What is there to eat, drink and snack on?? NOT A THING OTHER THAN A WATER FOUNTAIN.. PACK ACCORDINGLY AND DONT FORGET AND HAND SANITIZER!!!

The museum has some cases you can look at and displays of items from the time period. They also have a small section for a gift shop as well as the tour books and pamphlets on the cemetery. We headed up toward the stamp mill for the tour, and checked out some buildings and abandoned trucks in the field. We were s family of 8 for this trip with the youngest being 2. We ran through safety precautions and other general information from our guide, Malcom before beginning the tour of the stamp mill. Malcom gave factual information over the different areas of the tour and answered questions from the group. We had a sold out tour and alot of ears and questions. We got to tour through the stamp mill and see everything from the electrical room to the stamping and the Shaker tables. Malcom was an excellent guide and provided alot of information. We learned that for ever 5 homes still standing there were 80-90 more! The school has as many as 625 students enrolled at one time and that Bodie was the 6th largest town in California at that time. We had a great time visiting Bodie and getting to learn some of the areas rich history.

Most recently we visited Toytopia. This exhibit offers the chance to explore a hands-on history of toys from the past and into the future. My kids loved the oversized robotic claw, reminiscent of an amped up arcade machine. It was a blast trying to get the individually articulating fingers to close around the ball in order to lift it into the basket for the big reward. We also enjoyed the oversized battleship game. So fun to play and we spent 20-30 min there. Mr Potato Head was old school fun too. We made a competition out of it to see who could make the wackiest example. I think I won... or maybe my kids let me win. But the favorite had to be the mini arcade they had setup with some of the best old school cabinets. Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Dig Dug and so many more are all here as part of the exhibit and you could spend a long time here without realizing it! Oh and there's even a Zoltar fortune teller too! When you're done at toytopia you can go learn the history of Wilbur D May on the other side of the museum. I personally love exploring the artifacts and treasures he collected from his travels, especially the hunting and fishing trophies! All in all, a great little place to spend a

Just understand that May was a "big game" hunter when that was not frowned upon as it is now. Many of his "trophies" are found throughout the museum.
