It was not a particularly busy day for the farmers market but we had a nice time strolling along and seeing the variety of produce, handmade pasta, baked goods, and other items for sale! We stopped by one booth for a sample which had packaged Indian curries that can be easily boiled as a meal for one. At $10 we found them rather steep, but quite tasty! There was also a dumpling booth that seemed quite popular. This is a nice farmers market perfect for a relaxed stroll on a Saturday! Very family-friendly and a nice mix of local Houston finds.

While there are a couple of farmer's stands with fresh produce, nuts and dairy, I would say most stands sell prepared food items. There's a wide range of items from fresh baked bread, salsas, kombucha, donuts and more. There's also several coffee vendors to grab a nice beverage to sip while strolling the booths. Parking is very limited for this market. Expect to park on a neighboring street (be sure to pay attention to parking signs) and walk a couple of blocks to reach the market. Another solid option is to walk or bike in from the heights bayou trial. This is a great option to get a little exercise and reduce congestion in the area. Overall, a great market! Don't forget a reusable shopping tote and bring some cash if you can!

Grabbed a few awesome products -- local honey from Bee2Bee, seafood pot pies from Miya's Munchies (she's got both frozen pies and hand pies), and some gluten-free sourdough bread from Leven. Everything was good but like I mentioned above, the pot pies from Miya's are amazing. My one complaint would be the lack of produce. Only spotted one vendor with a relatively small selection. You can always head to the Houston Farmer's Market on Airline Drive, which is open daily. They have loads of produce. Maybe this goes without saying but it gets brutally hot. Parts of the market were in direct sun so please be safe. Water and sun protection. Leven bakery sells fresh coconuts to sip from. They're very refreshing but too small to share (and priced at $8 each). Might be a good idea to bring some water from home.

I spotted one vendor selling goat milk and another a ray of bread like jalapeno, raisin, and sourdough. Also, they had food vendors on-site. My favorite was Don Jorge, who used chamoy sauce and condiments on everything. I got his chips with olive oil and his fruit drink with a sprinkle of spice. I must say the chamoy made the taste even better. Charleston Kitchen Pies sold out quickly. I was actually going to purchase the display, which was a bourbon pecan and eggnog rum sweet potato pie. Gumbo Now Vendor and Pain Train Salsa, where I tasted their avocado sauce with their Tortilla Chips, is one of many vendors. It's a nice farmer's market and shouldn't be missed. If you come out, there's a huge park for the children to run around and for you to sit on the benches relaxing or eating a taco or chicken biscuit sandwich; there's really so much out here. Since it's a non competitive market there are so many diverse vendors and products to buy from. The salon is open to view and purchase some of Houston's local artist artwork too. Everyone that we have encountered has been very friendly and the chimney rock market staff is super helpful and nice too! Usually a food truck is there the whole time so it's great to make a date out of it. I also absolutely love that they support various local dog shelters and you are able to make donations to a great cause. Just make sure if you bring your dog (which they welcome and there has always been dog treats/merchandise vendors) during these hot summer days that they wear their "Barkenstocks" to protect their paws from the pavement! It's not a food/produce/meats heavy farmers market like many others in Houston, but you will find some local farmers selling produce, eggs, CSA boxes, and pre-packaged meals. And you will find a lot of artists goods/gifts and unique purveyors: dog food/treats, soaps, jewelry, bagged coffee, barbecue sauces, Indian food... If you are ever on the hunt for a locally-made and unique gift for a friend, check out this market on a Sunday. I recently bought a handful of gifts for a friend's birthday (and a purse for myself!). On a hot summer day, like the present, they have industrial fans blowing in every direction; they also have live music (sometimes mariachis on holidays). The newly placed shipping containers house permanent shops that are open beyond the market hours, so you're able to check them out on different days of the week, including Perry Ideas and Rasa Libre Coffee (they sell buñuelos, too!) I think as the crowd grows in size, more food and produce vendors will pop up. Support this market on a future Sunday, and then pop over to Ninfa's for some margaritas and brunch.

I wasn't sure what to expect, so I brought along a shopping bag for food. When I arrived, only me and a small family were there. Farmer Joe walked around with us and picked out fresh vegetables for us! It got to a point where my bag was completely full and I had to decline any more. I got eggplant, collards, fresh herbs, swiss chard, broccoli, flowers, and a jar of raw honey. Farmer Joe was suuuuper nice. He explained to us how the farm operates and how they give food to the food bank across the street free of charge for neighborhood families. I won't reiterate information you can find on their website, but they are a great organization! When it was time to pay (cash only), the price was unbelievable for the amount of organic food I had received. (Both me, and the family, paid $5 to $10 extra as a donation to the farm- he said we didnt have to, but we insisted.) I will probably be coming here weekly to pick up greens instead of visiting the grocery store, even if it is out of the way. Not only are you able to get farm-fresh organic food, LITERALLY picked that day, for a low price, you are also helping a farm that gives a lot back to the community. I will also be back to volunteer! TL;DR: Great organic food for cheap. Bring cash when you go, and be sure to chip in some extra cash for donation.

They seem to have a pretty diverse offering of food and even allowed us to pick out our own produce. The staff was very knowledgeable on growing and taking care of plants and was extremely friendly with any questions we had. They are pretty kid friendly as well and we found that many other parents bring their kids to hang out as well. They were pretty relaxed and laid back and just let the kids run free and roam around the property as they pleased which was really nice. The crowd that was there was pretty diverse which was pretty cool. I am not sure if this is how the pricing always works but they gave us a standard size grocery bag and told us we could fill it with whatever we wanted for $5 which I thought was an unbelievable deal. They do everything local, sustainable and organic as well. Naturally I gravitated to the kale plants as its one of my favorite greens and its does not get much better than picking it fresh off the plant. My only concerning observation was that the place seemed kind of like an utopian dream. The location is pretty unique in that is it located in one of Houston's less glamorous neighborhoods which can be totally overlooked but I noticed that very little of the people from the community seemed to be attending and participating. This is concerning since having the community backing up the establishment could be really useful for expansion. But education folks on healthy eating habits is a challenge so no pun intended. Also, as much as I love the easy going type of environment that they create, a little bit more order in the way that they do business could be very useful for them and consumers. All that aside, I highly recommend this place, especially if you live by. There is a great crowd of people to interact with, experts on growing food, kid friendly and open minded environment that is very welcoming and they also do a lot of events regularly which are mostly free to attend. Make sure to check them out and support them because there are not a lot of places like this in Houston.
