Raleigh Iron Works is a mixed use development just outside downtown Raleigh. There are restaurants,…read moreshops, offices, a yoga studio, gym and apartments. Parking is available in several lots and there is also a parking garage. I hadn't been to RIW since it first opened and the parking and offerings have expanded with plans to keep expanding on the 19 acres with one more phase. The Peden Steel Company once operated on the property. I liked how remnants of that steel were used throughout the development as the property was redeveloped. The Bow Truss Building produced munition during World War I. Barges were produced during World War II. The original steel was used for the buildings; art; benches; planters; and monuments. The courtyard of the Double Gable Building shows the exposed steel. This is a nice area to sit outside and has a fireplace for when the temperature cools. Native plants were used for the landscaping, and a full-time horticulturist was hired. The native shrubs and perennials provide food for pollinators, and native plants need less water. I could tell that a lot of thought went into the selections for landscaping. There are murals on the property too, one near the parking garage, another outside of the parking garage that you can't miss driving by and another above the pool. On the last Saturday morning of the month, a history and art tour of Raleigh Iron Works is offered, where you can learn more about RIW.

There is street parking but I am unsure of any other place that they have. When you first walk in you can't help but notice the open space and everyone working, I immediately went into work mode. Like many areas in…read morethe warehouse district, parking is complicated, but just drive around the block with the same strategy that you have when you go to Humble Pie (across the street) or The Pit (around the corner). Nice hardwood floors. High ceilings. Steel beams. Modern fixtures. Abstract art. Open space. A great venue for events like the one I attended tonight with a wide great room and some small rooms off to the side. As the daughter of a builder, I was impressed with the design and the layout too. As a sometimes event planner, I also appreciated. Nicely done. When you're networking, you want to be able to see well and move around easily. From what I learned tonight, this is also a great location for start-ups, entrepreneurs, small businesses and people who just need an office space. It's collaborative and friendly with the allowance for your own work space. In addition to the networking event tonight, I did talk to some people who actually work in offices there. They said it could be a little hard to concentrate at times with people coming and going or playing music with such open spaces. Downstairs I saw a ping-pong table and large counter-space. Apparently sometimes they have food there. My new friend pointed out that it can also be a little distracting knowing there's beer on tap downstairs... maybe so, but I relax a little after a drink and work better (no, I'm serious -- did most of my top notch graduate work with wine in hand). But, we're all different. There are some really neat businesses at home at HQ Raleigh though. Really neat to check something like this out for myself.

My wife and I have been living at Wakefield Glen for four months now. We left another apartment…read morecommunity in Raleigh we'd been at for 5 years. During our search, we went to over a dozen other communities, some more expensive than Wakefield, some cheaper. There was no competition, Wakefield Glen was the clear choice. Our tour was lead by Elisabeth. She wasn't the typical uncomfortably pushy sales type we had seen at almost every other community. She patiently answered our questions and let us tour the units at our pace. She was incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and quickly followed up with all of our post-tour requests. The units themselves are gorgeous. The bay windows fill the space with natural light, the units are in great shape from floor to ceiling, and the spacious balcony is one of our favorite features. The grounds are impeccably maintained, covered in trees and flowers that enhance your privacy without compromising aesthetics. The Wakefield neighborhood is neatly tucked away but within 5 minutes of most anything, you'd need. There's plenty of trails and parks to enjoy within walking distance. But the real competitive edge Wakefield Glen has is its staff. Since moving in, every interaction I've ever had with the staff has been positive. It's not just one or two really outstanding individuals, but truly a fantastic team of people. They respond quickly, genuinely work to be as helpful as possible, and go above and beyond any other apartment community I've lived in. Service requests are filled on time, they email you reminders when packages arrive for you, they're vigilant about enforcing the community rules which are far more flexible and welcoming than most communities, and they're an excellent resource all around. Thet engage with resident like they're neighbors. After four months, I can say with confidence that I made the right choice moving here. I highly recommend Wakefield Glen, and I'm confident you'll feel the same.

Markell Wilkins, the assistant manager, is extremely arrogant and not helpful at all. His position…read moreas assistant manager is to HELP active tenants, future tenants, and tenants moving out feel at ease and that is absolutely not what he does. We were WRONGFULLY charged an invoice for "pet seal damage to carpet" after we moved out. We do not have any pets nor have ever had any pets at any home we've lived at. When we went in person to try to clear this situation up, Markell's responses were cold and short which made me feel uneasy about this charge made to us. Because I knew we would not get anywhere with him, I asked to please be taken to the apartment unit for which the damage was done to the carpet to confirm for myself that it was in fact OUR unit. Markell initially said yes and even asked the maintenance guy who was apparently working in our unit at that time if it was ok and they both said yes. Then he proceeds to double check with the manager, Amanda, in her office and she says no. We asked to speak to her directly and were were told she was in a meeting that was going to take very long even though we had just seen her minutes before not working and stuffing her face with food in what seemed like a break room. The BIGGEST CONCERN for us is that we asked for them to send us proof of these damages done to the carpet since we couldn't see them in person and the images sent to us by email were for a completely DIFFERENT AND WRONG unit than the one we lived in. When we brought this to their attention, they stalled and took about a month to even reply just to say that the wrong pictures were sent to us as proof but that they were certain they were charging us for the correct unit. How are we supposed to just believe that after they made that mistake? They handled this in the worst way possible and gave us no reassurance that they'd investigate further to insure they weren't wrongfully charging us. From the moment we were charged this invoice, they would not budge at all at the idea that this could have been a mistake. It made us feel like they thought we were liars and just trying to get out of paying the invoice. We have no issue paying an invoice when damage is done, but that "pet seal damage" was not us. Like we said, we do NOT have pets. The pictures attached is their image sent to us as proof of the supposed damage and the picture with the decorated room is OUR unit. They are clearly different units, the views are different and the gap between the wall and the left door is different as well. Do not waste your time applying to live in an apartment complex where they are INCOMPETENT and treat you like liars without even having proper proof of what they accuse people of.
