But when it comes to booze, I could go on all day. In a city where cocktails are questionable and scotch is king, Good Spirits Co is a gasp of fresh air to a drowning man. Not unlike Gerry's in Leeds/Soho or Astor Wines in NYC, this shop offers enough variety and substance to satisfy most any liquor lover. Beyond a product selection that could leave me browsing the shelves for hours, the staff is knowledgeable (and trying to become even more so!), welcoming, and the space is noteworthy in its own right. Ask about the cashier's counter sometime - it's a piece to be pondered and appreciated. I'm excited about the forthcoming tasting room to come, and hope that local Glaswegians come to admire and adore this liquid gold outlet for the treasure it already is.

The shop can only be describes as a treasure trove for all things Whisky, Cigar and tobacco. Not being smokers I can't really talk too much about the smoking products but there seemed to be an extensive collection and they have a humidor located at the back of the shop. The whisky selection was absolutely brilliant, with lots of bottles I had never seen before. I could have stood and looked at the range for hours but my attention was immediately pulled to their small selection of gins and wines. Deciding to treat myself to a little bottle I started looking at the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. After picking up a tasty looking little number a member of staff saw me looking at it and said it was the only wine Victoria Beckham drank and it was very difficult to find in Glasgow - SOLD! Who cares if it's true of not I still feel now that VickyB and I are now destined to be BFFs. As you would expect in this type of shop the staff are incredibly knowledgable and helpful. A great little shop selling brilliantly interesting things - I will definitely be back soon to stock up again.

Sadly I picked poorly in my rosé as it wasn't the nicest but I don't blame Oddbins for that. They had a good beer range and I picked up some Fyne Ales Jarl & Sanda Blonde. All up it came to £17 which I was pretty happy with and the guy working was friendly and chatty. This is in a handy spot just off the motorway or if you're heading out for dinner around the area. While I wouldn't go out of my way to return here I would definitely pop in if I was in the area.

They have a good selection of beers, ales and ciders, with a fair view available already chilling in the fridge. The staff have always been lovely and super helpful when I've been in, helping me choose items including a rather fab malt whisky for a presents. You can also pick up a small selection of crisps etc to eat with your carry out!

I developed a close bond with one of the staff who worked nights. He would chat and give my friends cheap prophylactics. But this dream was burned to the ground when a massive fire consumed my treasured store. Raju had monopolised the Gibson Street convince store trade! But now it is back and better than ever and though the management may have changed the store will always have a warm place in my heart. It is open 24 hours a day and will cater to all your nocturnal whims.

This Oddbins is on the fabulous Skirving Street and generally has a pretty good range for whatever you're looking for. We didn't want anything specific, just some "weekend alcohol" - I went for wine whereas Graeme had a look around the beer section. At the moment they have quite a few January offers and I was happy with their offerings around the £5 mark per bottle. I'm not sure what beers Graeme got but they looked like hipster craft ones so he seemed happy. Service is nice and friendly, and I'm sure if you needed help they could give it. On this occasion I was happy just to pick something and give it a shot but if it was a special occasion or a gift I'd definitely ask for help. They'll wrap your wine up nicely in paper too, which I always like as it makes me feel that bit more fancy.

All of those things, and more. It wasn't cheap (well, it was sometimes, but not usually), but I liked it. What happened? Oddbin's parent company more or less went to the wall, and all the stores shut with the exception of the most profitable ones who were taken over by new owners. The new owners appear intent on driving this place into the ground. £9.49 for a bottle of (yuck) Blossom Hill? Check. £9.99 for a bottle of Isla Negra? Check. Not only have this new mob stocked up on the most bland, generic, pointless examples of mass-market crap to ever blight the face of the earth, but they have then decided to overprice them to oblivion. Gone are the days of picking up a cheeky Bordeaux, loving it, popping in the next week to find that;" there's no more, but how about this one instead?!" Gone are the days of Schneider Weisse Adventinus (even better at 4 for £8) or a cheeky case of Schofferhofer Hefe. Gone are the days of those wee orange spicy thai ricecakes in a green paper bag that were horrendously overpriced. Even gone are the days of asking the staff for recommendations. Imagine - "what would go with the roast I'm cooking tonight, the JP Chenet or the Jacobs Creek" - two years ago you'd have been laughed out of the place! Also gone is the excitement of walking in, not quite expecting what you were going to come out with - THAT was the magic of Oddbins. The new owners have ripped the heart of of this place. Generic crap like Carling (who deliberately drinks this?!), white Zinfandel and Bells whisky. I feel sorry for the workers, It's a shadow of its former self and it will NOT survive lest it's brought back to its former glories post-haste. SHAWLANDS DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER HADDOWS/THRESHERS (why do you think they all closed?) Shawlands needs its old Oddbins back. Run well, it would thrive.
