I cannot praise Ashfield House vets highly enough!…read more I use them both for as a volunteer for a local animal welfare charity but also for my own pets. The staff are exceptional and all vocationally driven. From the reception staff to the nurses to the vets - animal welfare is clearly a driving force for them. This is not to say for your own animals care it isn't pricey (which vets isn't!) but I believe their costing to be fair and the quality of care is beyond doubt. As vet care is expensive one thing you can rest assured is they are a practice which fully explain the costs to you in advance and will not undertake unneccesary work for their own financial gain. For those with their animals insured they have members of staff specialised with helping you in your claim. The main site at Long Eaton has hospital status and they are able to carry our surgical work from the routine to highly specialist. Having brought them many trauma and abuse cases through my volunteer work I have been amazed by their expertise on several occassions which gives me greater confidence that should any of my own animals ever be in such a situation, they would be afforded the best possible treatment. Many of their vets sepcialise and if you speak to their knowledgable reception staff they will be able to recommend a vet should your pet need a specific area of care. Their specialist fields included oncology, orthopaedics, dermatology, optholomogy and much more. A visiting pet behavourial specialist also holds a clinic here. They run a number of clinics and clubs including the weight club and the puppy club which are well worth attending. They have a second branch in Spondon and a specialist feline clinic at Bramcote. Most importantly this vets will do all in their power to make you and your pet comfortable. This is especially important at times of stress after an accident or on losing a pet. There is a small car park for clients to the rear of the surgery.

I…read morethink mainly that has to do with the fact that I'm uninsured and pay through the nose for treatment. As with all vets the drug prices are extortionate. At least double the price of what can be had by buying from an online pharmacy. But they have you by the short and curlies. You must have a prescription, to get a prescription you must see a vet and pay for their consultation. Once you have had the consultation you must then pay for the prescription. The prescription only covers one drug, so if like me you need two you must pay for two prescriptions. I still save nearly £1,000 per year by doing it this way, so you can see just how extortionate vet drug prices are in order to still save that amount of money.

My dog had a TPLO at Scarsdale derby Pride Park practice, our experience with them was negative…read morestart to finish. The miscommunication with the staff is what let's them down, a lot of them are not competent at their jobs. Reception staff are a classic example. Most have an attitude problem & no manners. When it came to paying for the TPLO, The bill was wrong, phone calls had to be made to Dawn to sort this out, while I'm at reception with a huge queue behind me, they expect you to hand over your card, pay and go! I was made to feel like I'm doing something wrong by querying my bill. Not really, when paying over £4,000 NO INSURANCE, I have every right to know exactly what I'm paying for. It's called clarifying your bill so you can then pay in full, without any fear you've overpaid. They seemed upset I had found the overcharge. No sorry, no nothing, just scowling faces. Another time We checked in to reception, or so we thought & we are waiting and waiting & finally get a phonecall asking where are we? They hadn't checked us in. So we were then classed as being late for the appointment & absent. again eye rolling & whispering about us.Next my dog returned for stitch removal, I handed her over in good faith that the staff would remove the stitches, got home & 2 days later I find a large metal staple still left very visible in my dogs stomach. (She had a wart removed) alongside the TPLO.This was before Xmas and to drive another 50 mile round trip back to Pride to get it removed, was out of the question! Their error, their fault!I then had to ring around multiple vets near my home to get the staple removed, which before Xmas was very difficult. They needed all of her history sending over etc before they would take the staple out. It took me all of Saturday to sort this out. I insisted Scarsdale pay for this. Why should I pay the penalty for THEIR mistake. What kind of incompetency is this to send a dog home with a staple still in its stomach. Bizarre. They were really 'funny' with me after this incident and when we visited again my mum overheard staff members talking about us. Not very professional is it......I had a 1st physio session booked in for my dog so I asked at reception how do I get into the physio, do I go outside to the main doors a good walk away, or can I go through the pet shop area to them. The receptionist (super rude with a huge blonde bun on top of her head) told me I had to go outside and walk round to the doors to get in. I carried my dog out, into the cold, round to those doors. They are not in use. She knew this when she spitefully sent me out that way. How can a receptionist not know that the outside doors are not in use? She works at Pride, not me! I returned back to say I cannot enter that way, then she said, oh yeah, go through the pet shop area..I asked why had she sent me out that way then? She said she didn't know you could go through the pet shop area! Seriously? She's dealing with physio patients on a daily basis, she had sent me on a pointless mission outside with my dog. She then proceeded to bad mouth me to another staff member as my mum overheard them talking about us. I had booked my dog in for 10 sessions of physio, so they gave a discount of £200 off of that as a goodwill gesture for the metal staple they left in her belly. Fair enough. My dog went back to pride for a 6 week post op Xray and check. There was another 'miscommunication' again with a nurse, Adriana who had said information to me that was not correct..this then resulted in another chat the following day with a very hostile Alice, who said I seem upset every time I visit. Well I'd say it's normal to be upset at a metal staple being left in my dogs belly, also being badmouthed by reception staff, the incident with blonde bun deliberately sending me out into the cold with my dog the wrong way to physio, then the incident with Adriana.I have lost all faith in this practice. It feels uncomfortable & awkward to go there now. Some of the staff there are quite simply incompetent & some reception staff are not very good at their job, sadly Pride will never accept that. It seems it's the customers fault, never theirs.THEY WONT ADMIT THEIR FAILINGS NOR DO THEY APOLOGISE!

The Kedleston road practise is just outside the town centre. I don't drive so it is good for me…read morethat I can walk from town in about 20 minutes. The lobby area is big and has separate waiting areas for dogs and cats, which makes it easier if you have a nervous cat that gets scared by dogs. I took my kitten to be castrated and all the staff were excellent. The animal is treated well and booked in by their own name. It doesn't seem to matter which member of staff you speak to, they all seem to know your pet personally. I also like the fact that even though they sell lots of pet foods and products, they don't do the hard sell on you to buy anything. The nurse was really great with him and even though he is usually scared of other people he never made even a whimper with her and let her examine him without trying to escape. The after care is just as good and when I needed a taxi to take me home, the receptionist offered to ring for me from their phones and I was able to wait in the waiting room for the cab to arrive. I would definitely use the practise again. Next up my little girl kitten

The waiting room is pleasant, clean and tidy with plenty of leaflets, pet toys and foods to browse or buy. It creates the perfect first impression. The receptionists are equally lovely, putting the customer at ease whilst making a big fuss of the patients. The vetinary nurses and the vets are just as kind. It seems it is their policy to be animal lovers first and pet care professionals second. Whilst a trip to the vets is always stressful for animals and owners alike, a visit to Ashwoods is as pleasant as it can be. I can't recommend it highly enough. The only downside is that the car park is rather small, making it tricky to manoeuvre your 'ambulance'. Off-site parking is pretty tricky too as Ashwoods is on the main Lichfield Road.

Upon arrival, there was no introduction from the vet, and did not see to want to meet my nervous german shephard. The vet seemed very annoyed that he was meeting a new patient, and after I asked him why he felt so upset, he became verbally aggressive towards myself, pregnant fiancee, and dog. After he started to verbally attack us about the nature of our dog (whom is very anxious around new people as he is a rescue dog), we decided to leave. I would not recommend this man to anyone! He is a very rude, arragant and a vile man. I do not know how he has sustained his business so far.

You have to fill in a form (for insurance reasons I presume?) then they give you a dog and tell you a bit of information about it (like 'keep him away from other dogs' or 'he's recovering from an operation so bring him back in half an hour') then you take the dog off for a walk over the fields, down the canal, or wherever you like really (within reason). I think this is a really good idea because the dogs are always so excited to go for walks and it is a massive favour to the staff there. It is also good experience if you are thinking about getting a dog yourself. My friend did try to adopt a dog from there but didn't manage to pass the (very strict!!) criteria which was a shame :-(
