    I ordered 3/13, sauce is labeled 3/11

It pains me to write this review because I'm a third generation customer of Hartle's, specifically off Potomac St. however, I feel obligated to warn the potential health risks from the current operations. I live out of state and rarely visit the area, but will go to Hartle's when I do. I decided to pick up a couple subs and fried pickles today, 3/13. From the minute I walked in, it was an unpleasant experience. I was the only customer in the restaurant yet the older lady work the cash register was snippy and rushing me. I was caught off guard that toppings were no longer included unless requested. I was also caught off guard by the prices- the online menu and physical in store menu signage are not accurate which is misleading. I was expecting to pay no more than $20 however, I paid $25+. The price is incredibly expensive for the substandard quality of not only the food, but the quality of the food preparation and storage. In the past, it usually takes around 10 minutes for the order to be ready so I sat down at the bar. It was then where I took in my surrounds...the visible black colored mold on the cabinets, walls, and ceilings, water marks and holes in the ceiling, the shoe prints on the bar (how and why?!?!). I also watched the same older lady use the register and then prepare my subs without washing her hands or putting on gloves. After about two minutes, my order was ready and I left. After getting on the road, I tried to find the receipt in the bag since I was still in shock over the prices. I opened the fried pickle box and was D I S G U S T E D. I was given two day old sauce (3/11 but today is 3/13) and the pickles were not even pickles, they were the skin of a pickle. They also looked as if the had been dried out/ old. I knew right then and there, I was not going to eat any of the food or allow my family to eat it. It was going straight in the garbage. When I arrived home, I inspected the sandwich's and again, was disgusted to find the meat was brown and pale. This is a sign lunch meat is NOT SAFE to eat. My mother, who ate Hartle's every day while pregnant with me & my brother in the 80s & 90s, tried a sliver of sandwich before she saw it was brown. She said it did not taste good which was at that point when we saw the brown meat. Everything, all $25+ spent went straight into the garbage bin. Very upsetting. Late this evening, my mother projectile vomited the sandwich. I write this long review, to warn others the health concerns with this location.

Pretty sure this steak sub was microwaved. The cheese was hard and crunchy. All the employees did was talk shit the entire visit.

Their appetizers are big enough to be entrees in and of themselves! I really enjoy the Buffalo chicken sandwich, which is coupled with the French fries in the sandwich, not on the side. Even the salads come with French fries! You will not leave Primanti Bros hungry. All their food is extremely satisfying, but not necessarily over the top tasty. I'd give it high-end good, but not great. What may sound odd...is that my favorite thing is the cole slaw served on the side. It's sublime! The service is pretty good. The waiters and waitresses make sure your drinks are full, and are happy to help with navigating the rewards app, which is definitely worth getting. This is a very fun spot, with all the big games on the tvs which surround the bar and dining areas. Give it a try!

The venue can be overwhelming, with lots of choices. One section of the menu was dedicated to hotdogs, one section is dedicated to non-hotdog entrées, and also Appetizers, desserts, and drinks. The dogs here are amazing! I loved the Chicago dog, but when I had my a bite of the Big Mac dog I wished I got that one too. Then we had the pastrami dog making it a three dog night. The fries are also especially delicious because they are crunchy and battered. My little one had a kids meal that came with fries and he was forced to share. With any hotdog, you get your choice of beef,/chicken, or veggie. We went beef all the way, and it was a great choice. The dogs are split and grilled on a flat top, and maintain all of their juicy goodness. And the toppings just enhanced everything. If you're a hotdog purist, ketchup and relish or mustard and onions would also make for perfect dogs. The staff was friendly and super accommodating to a feral toddler. For three hotdogs, a kids meal, I need rings, and drinks, the $40 price felt like a bargain. Great quality and value.

Husband got the foot long coney dog and my son got a sausage with some kind of sauce on it. I eat about 2 hot dogs a year so when I say it was delicious, I mean it. Now the bad. My 4 year old grandson got grilled cheese. It took forever for the food to come out. Like forever forever. He ate like nothing bc he drank his whole drink while we were waiting as we had been at the park for a couple of hours beforehand. I know, not unusual for a little guy. That's not the real problem. I got a side of onion rings and it was almost $5 for like 6 onion rings. Ketchup in little packets... not cost efficient and annoying for us. Had to track down waitress to get husband a second beer and me a first. There was no air conditioning and it was so hot in there!! AND THE WORST THING OF ALL... WHEN THE BILL CAME THERE WAS A 20% INCLUDED GRATUITY FOR "LARGE PARTY", which was not discussed. First of all, it was 4 ppl. That is not a large party. Second of all, this was not mentioned by staff. I see this sometimes with a group of 8 or more and it is usually noted in a menu somewhere or mentioned. But 4 people is not a large party. My husband and I both worked in the restsurant industry in our younger years. We get it, servers need to be taken care of, but come on. BEWARE. I would have gone back for that hot dog even with the sloooowww service and just not gotten a side, but that automatic gratuity thing is ridiculous. Customer lost.

It can be difficult to find gluten free options and they always deliver good food. However, there definitely seem to have been some changes recently--not sure if it's new management, perhaps multiple factors. I'm excited to see some new additions to the menu, and any period of change is bound to come with some hiccups, but the use of generative AI is a HUGE concern for me. The environmental impact of generative AI is well-known, and that seems to be at odds with the values of Free Range which emphasizes local, fresh food and being more environmentally friendly. However, on my most recent visit, AI-generated merch was available for sale, as well as AI-generated coloring pages for kids. Some of the text on recent social media posts also has hallmarks of AI generation. There are many free coloring pages available online, and it could be really cool to see a collaboration with a local artist for merch designs instead. Free Range Cafe is a place I've always really enjoyed, and their food is still delicious. I want to continue coming here, so I hope that management can take these concerns into consideration as they move in their new direction.

Even if I'd be Hagerstown for some reason, I'd either be on the freeway or downtown area at best. This is on the north side of town, so unsure when or if I'd ever be back. On my way to my work travel, the rail was coming which might mean I'd be waiting 10 minutes, so I decided to pop in here for lunch. Staff was very nice. I asked several questions about the menu, and they were helpful. I got a grain chicken bowl with rice, Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, & more. It was excellent. The place was clean with plenty of room to seat and enjoy my nice meal. They had a beautiful water jug, which I enjoyed water in my courtesy water cup. Overall, it was an excellent experience with the outstanding bowl. I'd come back if ever back over here.
