We have kept our garbage containers in the same spot for over 30 years. Hartel demands we move them now. I disagree with those who say Hartels is easy to deal with. There are other options. Suggest you look elsewhere for your waste removal needs. read more

We are on a rural route and Hartel's has treated us very well. Our garbage pickup is scheduled for every two weeks. Occasionally I screwed up on the schedule and put the grabage out on the wrong week. Rather than pass dby or ding me for my error, the driver simply took my garbage and left a kind note to let remind me of my schedule. They run on time, do a good service, and treated me well. read more

I'm gonna start with people need to accept responsibility for their actions. And let me tell you, this company did just the opposite of that. I was traveling down the highway, far behind one of their garbage truck, and a fairly large object (7-9 inches) flew out of one of their trucks, and cracked my windshield. I called their customer support, which just told me to file a claim under a normal glass breakout, and that they are going to check their gps to see if that truck is still open. Keep That In Mind. I than contacted Dan Hartel, which told me "We don't get into that, as we can't prove anything". Well, I'm sorry to be the one to inform you, but your customer service agent provided that for you. They already proved that they can match up the time and location, AFTER I provided My time and location. And at this point, it's not so much about the repair, it's about getting someone to admit their fault. I haven't gotten one person to say anything related to an apology, or admitting it happened. I am new to the Duluth area and choose Hartel's off of favorable google reviews. I am VERY happy so far with their service and just now when watching their truck on its run, the truck driver emptied my neighbor's trash can. When the truck arm put the can down, the can fell on the ground. Now the driver could've just drove off, but he got out and fixed the can upright. THAT was great to see and I am looking forward to being a customer for a long time!! read more

I've been pleased with Hartel's service. I only wish they picked up recycle bins every week. I seem to travel every two weeks when they pick up the recycle, meaning I usually have 6 weeks of accumulation by the time my schedule fits theirs. read more

Very expensive service with poor communication and terrible customer service. I signed up for yard waste cart service and was told that there were 2 pickups remaining in the year and my next bill would reflect that charge. I was told that I need to call at least a day ahead for pickup. That is fine. The first pickup went well. When I called to indicate that I would like the last pickup of the season I was told that I would need to pay $6 more per bag because I hadn't signed up for cart service. I explained to the person that I had signed up for it and she said, " It wasn't noted that you had.". So basically somebody decided not to do their job correctly and now I have to pay for it. They are unethical, have extremely poor customer service, and are only looking to make money by any means possible. When I asked for a confirmation email about my service termination, I was told that they couldn't do that. When I insisted, the person said, "I can try.". I received a form email 5 minutes later. Obviously these emails are sent routinely and Hartel's just didn't want to do it. Do yourself a favor and go with another company. read more

They tell you that you have a week but they will come early to pick up the dumpster. They dropped the dumpster off very late Wednesday and came the next Wednesday very early in the morning. I had a pile of stuff outside the dumpster that i needed to put in the dumpster but they came and took it away and left me with my trash! I had to rent another one from a different company! When i called them they said, "sorry there is nothing that we can do for you". They then hung up the phone. Seriously, love this service!! Always have been willing to work with us about various situations. When I was 8 months pregnant I had one of their drivers offer to bring my heavy trash out to the street for me. read more
