As you walk up Richmond High Street, past all the chain bars and restaurants, a little sign catches you eye - but it is at foot level. Brouge is located in the basement of a building, so you have to walk down stone steps, and push open a heavy wooden door to get in. The inside is pleasingly designed with cosy, sleek leather booths. I was with friends who wanted to make their way through the Belgian beer list, and it is comprehensive beyond your wildest dreams. I lost count of the varied amount of beer that were on tap, but I saw blonde bier (using the Belgian spelling), brown bier, fruit bier, Trappist bier, as well as ales. Pages and pages of all types of beer. They all went down a treat - apart from for me, who doesn't like beer! Sorry everyone. Still, there was plenty to eat and drink, and non beer drinkers needn't feel left out. The lunch and dinner menu is also Belgian themed, one speciality is mussels, done 4 different ways. I also spied larger plates, like Belgian sausage and mash. I was pleased to see that there was plenty of wine on offer, and they thoughtfully suggested matches of meals to the drinks. The wine list does jump up in price though, most of the bottles were £25.00 or up. There were a handful of house wines which were under £15.00, thankfully. Perhaps next time I come here I will try out a couple of beers? I guess this is the place to do so.

So off we went, with my light coat over every other think layer of clothing I'd bought with me for the sleepover. We slowly traversed the thick snow-covered streets to the extent that we couldn't differentiate where the pavement ended and the road began (we got car-honked several times to get off the road)! By the time we got to Toast, I was covered from beanie-less head to toe with snow and felt like a sorry little ice-encased elf (for I'm vertically challenged by default), but as soon as stepped inside, after having stomped around outside for a good 5 minutes trying to get as much of the snow off us as possible, it was warm and inviting and the buttery fragrance of French patisserie and artisanal breads filled my nostrils and immediately triggered my dormant hunger. So we immediately eyed some comfy lounge seating downstairs and proceeded to ordering our pastries and coffees. The place is deceptively spacious, with upstairs seating and downstairs lounge + coffee tables. The interior decoration is chic; with clean lines and a sleek feature wall downstairs lined with glass shelves and bottles of VOSS water. We wiled the time away flicking through a very beautiful hardcover volume of Vanity Fair's decade-worth collection of photographs and enjoying our ham & cheese croissants and pecan & caramel muffin (omg, it was delicious and beyond the coveted crunchy and flavoursome muffin top - I was surprised to find that the rest of the muffin isn't your typical boring filling-less flavoured sweet nothings, but was generously filled with little squares of divine caramel melts and crunchy bite-sized pecan)! This place is such a gem! Almost tempted not to share reviews lest it becomes overly popular and ruined forever! I really love their salads, especially the No Bread Crayfish & Avocado since I'm on a low carb eating regime. It's just.. delicious. As for the coffee, I find Pret to be better than the Starbuckses of the world. First, it's organic milk. And second, it's just better roasted. It always seems to taste better to me. I was impressed that the shop, in addition to the traditional coffee and cappuccino they also serve freshly squeezed juices. I had a freshly squeezed apply juice which was delicious. I like fresh juice; it always makes me feel healthy. After the juice I also had an Americano. The coffee was a little weak or at least it wasn't as strong as I like it, but the flavour wasn't bad. I enjoyed the little cafe. It is conducive for just sitting, meeting friends, or reading a book. It's warm vibe and fresh delicious juice makes it a great alternative to Starbucks or Cafe Nero.
