When my parents and my grandmother moved to the Ocala area about ten years ago my grandmother was already starting to show some signs of short term memory loss and dementia, but she insisted on living in her own home and not with my parents. The retirement community they moved into was great and it's the kind of community where everyone seems to look after each other. When my grandmother got to the point where it just wasn't possible for her to take care of herself any more they sold her house and my Mom found her a place called the Bridge at Ocala. It was a difficult decision, and a very expensive one, but the employees at The Bridge cared for my grandmother until her last breath. When I say they cared for her, I don't mean they just took care of her, I mean they cared, they really did. When she was still able to get around they brought her into the community rooms and sometimes even forced her to have some fun (she'd fight it, but then tell my Mom afterwards that she was really glad she went). When over the past year or so she had gotten so weak and ill they would get her up into her wheelchair and bring her outside to sit with her or at least so my parents could sit with her. The place wasn't perfect, and there were times when there were miscommunications and even issues with things like her meals and the cleanliness of the place, but they were few and far between. The last time I visited my grandmother it took her quite some time to figure out who I was, but it was a nice visit for me...even if she didn't remember it the next day. My grandmother passed away yesterday in the early morning, in her sleep, and I'm happy she was at The Bridge with people around her who cared for her and about her. I can't thank you all enough for everything you did with my grandmother over the past couple years and for my mother who just simply couldn't be there all the time...I don't know what she would have done without you.

Families considering placement here should be prepared to install a camera in the room or visit frequently--because trust alone is not enough. Far too many troubling events were witnessed to simply look the other way. Promises of attentive care, consistent oversight, and responsive management were nothing more than empty words. Reaching someone in authority was impossible, and when contact was made, accountability was absent. This facility is the definition of overpromised and utterly underdelivered, failing at the very responsibilities it claims to uphold. From the start, the sales pitch was filled with assurances: personalized care, attentive staff, regular check-ins and medication management. . The lobby and dining area were staged to impress, projecting an image of quality and comfort. Yet those appearances were nothing more than a façade. Beneath the surface, the reality was disorganization, and a complete failure to prioritize what truly matters--the health, safety, and well-being of residents. There is no consistent nursing presence in this facility. Critical medical support is missing, and even the most basic emergency equipment is unavailable when needed. In a crisis, the default response is simply to call EMS, leaving residents exposed and unprotected. This dangerous lack of immediate care fuels constant fear about whether residents will receive timely help--or any help at all. Medication management is equally unacceptable. Prescribed medications were not given at scheduled times and, in some cases, appeared to be absent altogether. This failure is inexcusable, placing residents at serious risk and destroying any confidence that families might have in the facility's ability to provide even the most basic medical oversight. Communication is unacceptable. Management is often unavailable or unwilling to take responsibility. Staff morale is shockingly low, with employees openly complaining to residents and families about low pay and poor working conditions. This is unprofessional and deeply unsettling. Constant caregiver turnover has left the facility struggling to maintain consistent employees, directly impacting resident safety and comfort. During one visit, a stop at the billing office resulted in being told to return another day because the accountant was in the kitchen cooking. This was not only shocking but a clear illustration of dysfunction. Basic health care plans were ignored. Heating and comfort were also neglected. When the weather turned cold, heat was often turned off in resident rooms, leaving cold, damp air. The activities program was a constant disappointment. What was advertised as a vibrant calendar of events turned out to be inconsistent and uninspiring. Scheduled activities were , poorly organized, and offered little encouragement for meaningful social interaction or mental stimulation. Personal belongings were not safe items went missing from the resident room, with no accountability, and no resolution. Families should be warned never to leave anything of personal or sentimental value, as losses are permanent and replacements will not happen. This entire experience was heartbreaking. No elderly resident should ever be subjected to this level of indifference, and unprofessionalism. Do not be fooled by appearances. For the safety and dignity of loved ones, look elsewhere for care that can truly be trusted.

This facility was once a wonderful place to live when Allan Burns was the caring director in…read morecharge. Watercrest bought out the previous owners, and started bringing in their own staff. Since that time, care and services have continued a steady decline. I had hopes last fall when a new director was brought in, but her inexperience and inability to manage staff have proved disastrous. The "care" given to the most vulnerable in memory care is scary. There have been mornings at 8 AM when staff haven't shown up for work and all the residents had been left in bed or wandering the locked halls at will. Just last week I saw, from an upstairs window, a wheelchair bound man who had been left unattended in the direct, blazing sun when the heat index was 96 degrees. I reported it to the front desk person who went on the unit to bring him in. The new Memory Care director was nowhere to be found. The same was true when I was visiting on the unit and there was a reported fire with alarms blaring and lights flashing. The director opened the locked door to the unit and yelled evacuate. She closed the door, and left the staff and me to get all the residents to the back to get out. Needless to say, NO ONE checked the rooms for clients. When we came back into the building after the "all clear" several residents were seen wandering around, meaning they could have died had there been a real fire. I have called corporate to no avail.... nobody answers calls or returns them if you leave a message. The state should really come in and close this facility down like they did Watercrest Sarasota..... loved ones lives are at stake!

Our family had a mixed experience with Serenades, and I want to share an honest review for anyone…read moreconsidering this facility for their loved one. Food & Nutrition: The meals were consistently good, and my mom never had a single complaint about the food. In fact, she regained the weight she had lost during a prior illness, and we noticed improvements in her cognitive function that we attribute to better nutrition. For that, I truly give them credit. Staff: Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, professional, and caring. We never had issues with the people working directly with residents, and that's something we appreciated throughout her stay. Activities: This is where things start to fall short. While our family absolutely loved the activity director as a person--she is warm, dedicated, and clearly cares deeply about the residents--the activity program itself is lacking in both quantity and quality compared to other facilities we toured. Part of the issue seems to be that whenever the facility is short-staffed (for example, going over a month without a housekeeper or maintenance person), the activity director is pulled into those roles. While this shows her commitment, it also makes it clear that activities are not a priority here. If you're looking for a robust, engaging activity schedule to keep your loved one stimulated, this may not be the right fit. Safety Concerns (Major Issue): Our biggest and most serious concern is the facility's lack of functioning safety equipment--paired with the fact that they promote these features during tours despite them not working. During our tour, the director highlighted the motion detector in the room, explaining that staff would be alerted if a resident was up at night. This was a major selling point for us because our mom had previously fallen during the night. She also emphasized the safety lighting around the bathroom door and over the toilet. On move-in day, we were told a safety bracelet had been ordered to alert staff if she exited the building. None of these systems ever worked. The motion detector never functioned. The bracelet never arrived. The bathroom safety lights worked inconsistently at best. The emergency call cord--something standard in medical facilities--also failed because it was connected to the same malfunctioning server. As a result, our mom managed to exit the facility, something that likely wouldn't have happened if the bracelet had been provided. She also had two nighttime falls in the bathroom when the safety light wasn't working, and both times the emergency cord failed to alert staff. Despite all this, the facility remains "in compliance" because they can show a submitted work order. My mom was there for three months, and none of these issues were resolved--or even given a realistic timeline for repair. The Wellness Director even told me she had never seen the equipment functioning during her entire employment. Overall: While the staff is kind and the food is solid, the lack of functioning safety equipment is unacceptable, especially in a memory care or assisted living environment where residents rely on these systems for their well-being. The activity program also needs significant improvement. I hope the facility addresses these issues, but based on our experience, I cannot recommend Serenades for families prioritizing safety and engagement.

My stepfather was forced to quit his job. Two years ago, he had his leg amputated, and months…read morebefore that, he underwent a hip replacement on the same leg. On top of that, he was battling advanced liver disease and had survived two heart attacks. Last Thursday, my mother called me in distress--his condition had worsened. He was hallucinating and had lost control of his bowels, something that had been happening for weeks. When we arrived at the ER, we were told his symptoms were the result of liver failure. Still hallucinating and in unbearable pain, he was admitted to the cardiac floor. As anyone with experience in a hospital knows, weekends bring delays. While the nursing staff has been exceptional, and some physicians have gone above and beyond, the system itself is failing us. My mother, elderly herself, can no longer care for him at home. But to our shock, we found out that because their combined income is slightly over $3,000 a month, they don't qualify for assistance. How is that a fair measure? This is not a safe discharge. I pleaded with them--home is not an option. I requested end-of-life care to keep him comfortable, praying that hospice would be the answer we've always been told it is. But then we hit another roadblock. He was denied admission to a nearby hospice house because he wasn't on pain medication. Desperate, I contacted his physician, who personally ensured he was given something for pain and that the denial was reconsidered. The next day, my mother called--staff were at his bedside, asking if he was still in pain. Because he had finally received comfort measures and was no longer actively suffering, they again denied him inpatient hospice care. I begged them to reconsider--he has no insurance, we have no money, and sending him home is not safe. But the system doesn't care. They say he's "in his right mind," yet moments later, he's confused and hallucinating. And when he briefly returns to lucidity, he apologizes to us, saying, "I know we don't have the money for me to die. I didn't think it would be like this." The very safety net that was supposed to exist for people in his situation is nonexistent. Their only advice? Take him home, and they'll send someone to check in. That's it. Before you donate a dime to hospice organizations, look beyond the polished image they present. Ask for the real stories, not just ours, but those of countless others left without options. Some hospice facilities won't take you unless you're expected to live only 3 to 5 more days. That's not what hospice was meant to be--it was supposed to provide dignity in death, to allow families time to say their final goodbyes. The nurses caring for him are shocked he's lasted this long. But I guess unless a patient is in a complete coma, they don't qualify. Meanwhile, the executives running these organizations will never have to worry about what happens to their loved ones when they're too sick to work, uninsured, and making just barely too much for government assistance. The services that were supposed to be there when people like my stepfather needed them most haven't just fallen short--they simply don't exist.
