The Gun has recently come under new management, with the aim of turning the place back into what is once was. Which was a fine pub where you could have a nice drink, in comfortable surroundings, without football or music on the TV. The Gun also had a reputation for good food, either in the bar or upstairs in the restaurant. Well the good news is that Stuart and Emma have got the place just how it used to be. Good beers at reasonable prices, with casks ales available too. The food in the bar is very good, but upstairs in the restaurant you will be spoiled be a fabulous menu, cooked to your taste, presented very well and served by Emma or her staff, with a smile. Themed food evenings, such as tapas nights are very popular too. If a nice malt whiskey is your thing, then Stuart is building a good collection and will make you welcome with a friendly chat. In the past, people have tried to build up custom here with football on the TV, cheap beers, karaoke or live music, but Stuart and Emma are succeeding with The Gun Inn as it used to be.

Yet it retains its lofty ambitions, sat aperch a hill and surveying the area around. Such a classic Sunday lunch pub and one that people love to discover. Various family and friends have bragged to each other about this place only to find it is not such a secret with locals. This is the kind of place you will take someone to try. They must see it. They shouldn't have to miss out. Bearing all this in mind, it is not perfect. The layout is a little annoying for large parties- no tables will accommodate more than six or seven easily and there simply isn't enough space to be pushing and joining etc. Also, you run the risk on a Sunday of running out of certain meats so either there will be a hefty wait, as on my sister's most recent birthday here, or various diners will eat at different times depending on which meat they want with their Sunday roast. The carvery is good though. An ok amount of choice, but enough to satisfy most eager customers. The air is lively and chatty whilst being relaxed. If it weren't for the points above I'd have given it a 5.

The pub itself it's not really a 'drinking' pub these days, although it is a popular spot for people to stop have lunch. The cooked sandwiches (baguettes, Ciabatta etc) are hearty and delicious. Due to the location many people do choose to drive as its near the top of long and deceptively steep hill, but there is good parking so you should be fine most times if you do drive. The interior is a cosy layout of dark wood tables dotted around the room in a somewhat un-uniform manner, soft lighting and an unmistakeable smell of tasty food often wafting from the kitchen on arrival. This also one of those pubs where the landlord is really hands on, he's always working the floor, looking after the customers and making sure the service is working as it should. This is reflected in the experience that you receive, attentive staff, plates moved quickly, drinks often offered and always service with a smile. The prices are about average for a pub / restaurant such as this, although the menu is not huge, what this does mean is that everything you order is cooked fresh to order. There is always a good amount of people and a good amount of back ground chatter, we were there on a Thursday night, when at 9:30 a pub quiz starting taking place, it seemed a bit late to be starting a quiz but as it was free to have a go we decided to try our luck before fatigue and failure with the sporting questions forced us to make our exit. I would highly recommend a meal at the Wagon and Horses whether it is Sunday lunch, a tasty sandwich on a Saturday afternoon or a scrummy evening meal - then this place hits the spot every time!
