I am planning my wedding for next summer and was REALLY excited when I saw this space that just opened up for the Senior PGAs at Harbor Shores. My boyfriend and mom checked the space out and had an appointment with the event coordinator about two months ago, and at that time Harbor Shores had one wedding planned for this summer. This was the first venue we visited and so we didn't really know whether the prices they gave us were expensive or not, but were overall impressed with the space and the dinner options offered. They had lunch afterwards, which they loved. However, after looking at other venues in the area and in Chicago, this is on the more expensive end in terms of rental fees, and doesn't offer a drink package whatsoever. The kegs are extremely expensive ($125), and the bottles of wine as well ($22) or thereabouts. The deal is that you pay for what you drink. They have an option to have punch bowls of champagne punch, etc, which will run about $125, but that seems very costly as well and a poor use of resources (not too mention old fashioned and kind of non-hygienic). It's also really important to us to have local vendors featured: ie. local beers and local wines, and we were told that the drink options are "non-negotiable." This seems silly when the venue lacks experience and when the competitors offer these types of packages and will negotiate to please the bride and groom. Another note of warning: the tent accommodates 200 (again, non negotiable!!), with an extra tent expander that must be rented at an additional cost to you. I believe the cost is $3500 for fewer than 200 not exactly sure what that number was and $4200 with the additional expander piece. This seems very high for the area as well. But the tent IS beautiful!! Hopefully Harbor Shores will loosen up so that they can get more business! As the lady said today... They currently have nothing booked for next summer which seems odd (but makes sense based on their lack of flexibility)..... "but lots of inquiries!" read more

Just played the Golf Club at Harbor Shores and enjoyed on a beautiful day over Labor Day weekend. A nice addition to SW Michigan golf. One of the most scenic places I've seen in quite some time. Can't imagine what the land was like prior the golf course, but it's a huge improvement. If you can hit the ball well during the day you will enjoy and if you can't hopefully you can enjoy the environment. Benton Harbor, you are lucky to have a place like this in your back yard and thank you representatives. I wish the course was not so tricked up. Lot's of elevation, though nothing quite so unbelievable as # 7 hole(I think) Arrow Arum, which is one of most challenging par 4's I've ever seen. Hard to explain except you need terrific drive and then unbelievable second shot and then to terrific puts on amazing green to par hole. One of course where if off a little, especially on front off a lot. Classic example is # 3 Sunflower a short par 4 where any pulled second shot goes into the river. Typical. Other comment is greens need maturing as not rolling good at all, especially back 9 and all have a tremendous amount of undulation. Super challenging. All in all nice experience and would suggest you try. If homeowner or resident in Berrian County make sure you let them know as worth a discount off normal greens fees. read more

Challenging course with beautiful, scenic views. The greens were impeccable. This was my second time playing this course & just absolutely love it. The peak season green fee of $130 is justified with this Championship level course. Be sure to arrive early for your tee time so you can take advantage of the range & practice areas, which is included in your green fee. Locker rooms are clean & well-stocked if you need to shower or freshen up after your round. read more

This course is beautiful. Everything is maintained to a first class degree. The staff is very nice and helpful. It is also a very challenging course. I was golfing with a group that included 2 separate foursomes. The weather was terrible. The cold and the rain did not deter us. Our group had an amazing time and not one person regretted playing. I recommend this course o anyone who loves golf and lives beautiful scenery. read more

A Nicklaus signature and annual senior PGA championship venue the course is always perfect and currently greens fees are set at the daily forecast high temperature so it's a great value. Played the Beautiful and Challenging course in SW Michigan. I don't have anything but positive things to say about the course but it was a complete nightmare because it took us 5 hours and 45 minutes to play 18 holes. That is unacceptable. There is no way in the world I would ever reccomend this course to my friends until they improve the pace of play. read more

There is so much to talk about this golf facility..... ...The practice range is fantastic! Great wide open range. Great chipping area (including bunker) to test real life situations at the course. ...Must hit the putting green!! It is very realistic compared to what you will face during your round. ...The locker room is a bit small- probably the biggest downside of the experience - especially considering the price you pay. ...The grill is good. ...If you get a chance to get a lesson with Ross Smith (Head Pro) - take advantage of it. The tools he has to teach you are fantastic and he is capable of giving you some great tips! Ross can seem disinterested at times, but his feedback is actionable and usable. ...The golf carts are great (don't get too close to restricted areas-they will shut off!). You get GPS views and yardage - which I found to be fairly accurate. ...The amenities on course are sparse - really, you can't have anything better than a port-a-potty on the back 9? ...The greens are slippery, but true. ...The staff is quite helpful. Ask the starter a few questions - it is usually quite helpful. ...Stay out of fairway bunkers and you will score well!! I am an 11 handicap and shoot between 84 & 92 at the course. Very fun course. The wind will play havoc with your confidence and ball flight!!!! read more

I really wanted to like this course, and I did with the exception of the greens fees. More on that later. This is an excellent course located on land that was largely brown field before the course was constructed. The course meanders over 540 acres of Benton Harbor MI. It also offers some employment opportunities in a depressed area and the high school golf teams of St. Joe and Benton Harbor get to golf on a fine course. All good stuff. Many holes are scenic, offering views of Lake Michigan or the PawPaw river. Other holes are not so scenic, offering views of the highway or urban blight. The course is in great shape. The greens are very udulating. For me this is a challenge and fun. As long as you realize you're going to score higher than your home course (more than likely) I don't think the greens are a problem. I think they are a plus. The problem with the course is the fees to play. $150.00 is the max rate for a morning weekend round in the summer. That's $50.00 more than Eagle Eye, and $10.00 more than The Bear. This course does not compare favoribly to either of those courses. If Harbor shores needs to book most of it's golfers at $125 - $150 I don't think they will make it in Benton Harbor. I paid $85.00 to golf this course. I think $85 - $100 should be the maximum greens fee here, not $150.00. read more

I recently took a golf trip up the SW Coast of Michigan and The Golf Club at Harbor Shores was my first stop. It's important to note that I gave it 4 stars but that also factors in the fact that the greens fees were 77 bucks at 4pm. Had I paid twice that pre-twilight rates, my review would be 3 stars at best. Its difficult to say that the course was in the kind of shape to charge 160 dollars for... 77 was fair though. To start, my first impression was a negative one. Putting on my shoes in the parking lot, I got to witness a pretty good shouting match between two employees. One was upset about being asked to do something and both handled it about as unprofessionally as they could have. This standard of employee demeanor continued in the bar when I tried to order a sandwich before heading out. I was brushed off by a waiter and then felt like the bartender was so irritated by my request that I was doing something wrong by being hungry! He also snapped on some of the wait staff in public and again, the level of professionalism (or lack thereof) was on full display for all patrons to see. The course has a huge range and a really nice practice area. The carts have the touch screen GPS which is nice too. I am a good player (2 HCP) so I found the course to be a good test. It's a course that you'd definitely score better on the 2nd or 3rd time around because there are definitely some nuances that arent readily seen right in front of you. I've read alot about it being tricked up and while there are some pretty good humps and swails in the greens (which can be goofy if they use bad pin locations) it's still a fair test. For instance, much has been made of #7 but myself being a pretty capable player, I hit a 285 yd drive and only had an 8 iron in... allbeit that you've got to be able to hit it high to hit a good shot into that green. But a good player isnt asking where the windmill is in the least. Another example is #10. It has a HUGE tier in the green and coming out of a short fway bunker, I hit it on top and had to come down the slope. I actually had to chip it from the green because a putt would've rolled off the green or into the bunker. You can say that that is a goofy tricked up green but the point is that you just cant hit it up there. Even still after my mickelson-esque chip from the green I still had a look at par. All in all the course is nice. Alot of the foot traffic and golfers not repairing ball marks made the greens just okay but then again, it was 4pm when I went off. If you can play this track at twilight rates, I'd definitely do it. Full price doesnt have much value in my mind though. Unfortunately, as I write the review, although it was a great round and memorable, the glaring memory is the poor conduct of the staff standing around and either yelling at one another or just chilling and gossiping. Beware... not a female friendly course. We had 3 females and 1 male in our group. The first 6 holes we had to wait on every hole but didn't mind because they seemed busy. We slowed down on holes 7 & 8 and then the ranger showed up saying the guys behind us complained about our slow play. He said "you ladies need to speed up your play and start playing ready golf, do you know what that is, You are 14 minutes behind". We are all good golfers and he never said anything to the male in our group. We played the 9th hole fast and once again were caught up with the group ahead of us. We stayed with the group ahead of us and were always about 18 minutes behind. The guys behind us never caught up to us again. I guess it was okay for the guys head of us to play slow because they were males. read more

This golf course lives up to everything I've heard. The service is great from the moment you arrive to when you hastily step on the gas pedal to leave the property. The practice facility is amazing. The range is stocked with practice balls, and has plenty of targets to work on many parts of your game. The chipping green has 4 pins set up in creative locations to test your skills with landing location and reading the greens. There are two putting greens with many undulations that get you ready for the course. As for the course, holy ****! I only got to play 9 holes, for the other 9 got rained out. But the front 9 was absolutely amazing. There is a mix of holes is the woodland and holes in the dunes, which gives it a feel of 2 courses in 1. And that's only the front 9!! Unfortunately, I'm not local here, but I'll definitely be back to finish what I started. I would take the 9 holes here at Harbor Shores over 18 anywhere else in Southern Michigan. read more

From the sounds of things from past remarks the course has matured wonderfully! Played it yesterday and it is prob in my top ten best ever played. Number (7) is absolutely one of the neatest, yet hardest par fours I've played. Then again, just about every hole is wonderful, but hard. You need to be a very long hitter and straight or you'll have another five plus hour play. Do yourself a favor and try this course! read more
