A nice table in their garden with a view of the waterfront during a summer sunset is the best aspect of this long-standing restaurant. Unfortunately, the positives basically end there. Both the food and service leave a lot to be desired. Having dined there with a large group of over 10 people, the servers were overwhelmed and disorganized. Thankfully, such a large group gave me a chance to sample a wide variety of options from the menu. The starters we ordered all satisfied and had me looking forward to the main course. In the mood for a nice big meal, I ordered the herb-butter steak. What I got was a large serving of fries even a bar would be ashamed to serve, a portion of flavorless vegetables, and a small side of poorly seasoned steak. Thoroughly disappointing. Thankfully there were plenty of other options for me to sample from the rest of my group: prosciutto pizza, sea bass, and eggplant rigatoni. All utterly unappetizing. I went home and made myself a sandwich. As I mentioned, the atmosphere can't be beat - and that's what you're paying for. It's the only reason to eat there, since its spacious garden is great for large parties. Just don't expect anything else.

However where this cafe excels in is the atmosphere, the service and the quality of people it attracts. You can people from all walks of life here, from the extremely rich elite to the middle class teacher. Everybody comes here to have their breakfast. It's a unique mishmash and for that worth visiting. I guess it has to do with it being a snippet of old Istanbul and feeling authentic. The tables, the decor, the waiters, everything feels authentic. This isn't the sort of place you go for a culinary experience, you go here to sit down and enjoy your tea right next to Bosporus. P.S: It's very full on the weekend so be prepared to wait for a table if you want to have your breakfast next to Bosporus.

The area around this place is chock-full of cafes, and the crowd here was very yuppie Istanbul-young and modern. I came here for brunch. My friend and I had menemen, an omelette, and these delicious tomato-basil sandwiches that were neatly cut into triangles. We had fresh orange juice as well (why am I so blessed that every restaurant/cafe in Istanbul serves fresh OJ?). Everything was reasonably priced, waitstaff is friendly, and the decor on the walls is trendy and done by young Turkish artists. There are also the ubiquitous cats that are ALL OVER Istanbul, wandering about the tables in the outside seating and looking cute.

Of course, the menu is a bit pricey -- I wouldn't eat a full meal here unless it was a special occasion. Drop by for an amazing dessert (the souffle is INCREDIBLE) and some Turk kahvesi. Actually, I'm not a huge Turkish coffee fan. If you're like me, get an iced mocha with whipped cream, for 3TL less than the Starbucks variant! The inside is very nicely decorated, but there is a super cute garden in the back of the restaurant, where you can hide and relax. Unfortunately at the time of this writing there are some renovations, so it may not live up to the praise I'm lathering on. :) Just check it out and if it's unsightly simply lounge outside. A great place for a date or a conversation between friends. Quiet and a well-kept secret. Staff is very friendly and non-interfering.
