In many ways, I love this school. It is one of the cheeriest schools that I have seen and I have seen many. They combined 3 houses to create the school. The playground is also the combination of 3 backyards and it is one of the greatest playgrounds I have seen. There is a small kid play area with a huge sandpit, swings, gazebo, slide, etc. The big kid play area is awesome with a huge playstructure, the cutest cottage with separate rooms and kids can play house, lots of grass, a trike track and (best of all) a make believe village. This make believe village is amazing. The village has probably a half dozen little "shops" and a barn complete with hay, fake rooster, and fake horses. There is a fire station, farmers market, a garage with a car lift, a flower shop, etc. Each of the the little "shops" has the cutest and most life like props that make the parents want to be a kid again. The garage has a car lift with a race car mounted on top. I mean - how cool is that?! Anyway, enough about the playground... it's just that it is impressive.
I also like the fact that there is a lot of diversity at the school in terms of kids and staff. The staff varies in nationality, languages spoken and age. The kids vary in nationality and socio-economics.
The owner is very sweet, attentive and caring. She takes a lot of pride in her school and it shows.
They have all the basics down... a computerized check-in and check-out system, daily experience sheets to let you know what your kids did, ate, their moods, any boo boos, pottying habits, etc.
They have good teacher/student ratios.
They have music and movement every day for an hour, which I like. They serve hot lunch and 2 snacks.
They have separate little stations set up for the kids so that they can gravitate to their interests for the day.
They have family fun nights each month where all the parents are invited with the kids for dinner, a craft and some other activity.
They help you with potty training and they have a lot of patience for accidents.
The teachers seem happy and seem to enjoy their jobs and each other. They have a lot of energy and they keep the classroom organized and clean.
All in all... it is the best place I have seen after visiting at least a dozen or so schools.
Things that are only "ok" about the school: It is play based and there is not a huge focus on academics. They kind of gravitate toward the lowest common denominator - the basics for an age group. If you have a curious kid who thirsts for more, you may not get the individual attention to push your kid to their desire to learn more - which can lead to mischeif. Circle times seem rushed, and therefore kids don't seem to be that engaged. I think circle time can be better and more engaging. I think kids will be more engaged when they are challenged more.
We haven't found a great community there since people come from all over to go here. Since the school is so centrally located to many office parks in San Bruno and the Millbrae BART, families literally come from all over the Bay Area. We know families from SF to San Mateo and East Bay that go there. Family fun nights are set up to bring together community, but they are usually a bit too chaotic for us to meet any parents.
The food they serve seems just ok. I wish they served more fresh fruit and vegetables at snack times and at lunch.
Most importantly, my child only semi-likes the program. He isn't all that excited to go to school which is the biggest let-down for me as a parent. Can't tell if it is the age and personality of my kid or if there is something about the school itself he doesn't like. Perhaps he is a little bored... I'm not sure. If my kid LOVED going every day, then I would give this school 5 stars since I do believe that the staff works hard to make it a great experience for all. read more
