If you arrive in Munich, especially during Oktoberfest, in search of Weissbier, Pilsner, Dunkel,…read moreKölsch, Bock, you should round out the food you pair with your brew and have some amazing noodles at Max's. The only reason we had lunch at this spot was a table could only be had after a 40 minute wait on the curb. Feet almost never lie, especially when what drives those feet is hunger and a sharp, discerning taste. When it comes to this variety of noodles, I've spent years living in Asia and Max's brought be back to one of my favorite hawker centers. They make the noodles right in front of you. The broth, the beef, the spice.... perfection. Just for fun, I added a Fanta to my meal and then begged for another hit of noodles, which they will do, if you ate the type of person to finish them before consuming the broth, which is the correct way to eat Chinese noodles.

Max' is one of those few super efficiently run seated places where you don't need to feel obliged to tip or even order a drink, which makes the bill quite cheap by Munich standards. The beef soup ... is thin, consisting mostly of cheap noodles and watery broth that you need to make flavorable with the chili on your table. It's a weird niche they found here ... maybe their soupless noodle dishes are more savory, but I doubt I'll be back for more, and definitely won't wait for a spot.

After trying the duck here (and proceeding to come back for the next three evenings for the exact…read moresame dinner), my dad, a typical northeast China expat, has decided that he will not and can not eat Beijing roast duck from anywhere else--not even Beijing! We got the duck noodle soup and duck with chop suey veggies (if you couldn't tell, we just really wanted duck). Fortunately the duck in both dishes came in generously abundant portions. The duck in the duck noodle soup was quite outstanding. The noodles and the soup were pretty typical for a Chinese restaurant, but the duck--oh the duck! It was the perfect balance between chewy and tender, covered with a crispy layer of skin that held just the slightest hint of yummy fat without oozing all over and making you feel sick and worried about the potential of developing atherosclerosis. The noodle soup really let the duck take the spotlight. The duck with chop suey veggies came with a huge bowl of mediocre rice. The veggies were drenched in a little too much sauce, and the duck seemed to have been deep fried, which was disappointing. While the crispy exterior was made more crispy, the oil from the frying unfortunately drowned out the subtle flavors that duck naturally carries. All in all, a pretty authentic place and seemingly cleaner than other places of the same caliber. Duck was the highlight of our meal, and the duck flesh was also pleasantly "cleaner" (in that it exuded a lot less fat) than previous experiences in both the US and China. Definitely worth trying out, both for the local German looking for an Asian restaurant and for the Chinese tourist hoping for a familiar meal.

Not sure how long it's been open for and I assume, less than 2 years. It's situated over two floors and the downstairs is in in a brick walled cellar. Upstairs there is seating for about 50 with a big bar and kitchen and there is an outdoor terrace for the warmer months. The menu is on a tablet and you can choose and order based on a limited set of options for drinks and food. The mainstay here is hot pot a new fad taking over Munich :-) Modeled after the traditional Chinese hot pot places with a big difference, way too expensive for what you get. There are plenty of choices for vegetarians and two broths to choose from. We ordered three different ones mushroom, curry and spicy (should have chosen the extra spicy in hindsight). You have to order a maximum of 12 things to go into the hot pot at a time and, each item counts as 1, like 4 scallops counts as 4 items, really annoying as you have to wait 15 mins before you can order the next 12. Each of the items is also so small that you barely get two or three mouthfuls in a serve. So considering it takes 30 mins to order a round and receive it at your table, it's slow going if you are really hungry :-) The app on the tablet was really annoying as when you are scrolling it randomly picks items and puts them in your cart as it's too sensitive to touch. This meant that each time we had to go back to the cart and remove items, before going back and picking what we really wanted, annoying. I much prefer the places where all the items are at the table and then you can pick and choose the order in which you cook and eat, not here. The app will max out at 12 and then you have rethink what you want. Staff are really nice and the ambience is also nice. They have a small selection of wines and mostly reasonably priced. Flavour is lacking generally and they kept diluting the broth by adding water to it which meant the hot broth just kept getting milder and milder. Without the sauces on the side this would have been a very bland meal. Also some of the seafood was frozen when it arrived at the table and the crab still has the plastic wrapping on it straight out of the freezer. The scallops were frozen when we received it at the table. Not sure many people would like that at all, we certainly did not. Dessert choices are limited but we did end up trying four of their Asian flavoured ice creams - matcha, black sesame, ginger and yuzu - probably more Japanese than anything :-) Ginger was the best and the rest lacked the intensity of flavour you commonly get with these in Asia and when properly homemade :-) The coffee was served almost cold and its never good when you serve an espresso like warm. At over €40 a head this is an expensive option, considering what was delivered to the table. I don't think I would rush back here in a hurry. Value for money is really lacking and there are a few other places that deliver much better flavour for less money in town.

It's a Sichuan restaurant with a wide variety of Sichuan and other Chinese styles including a good vegetarian selection. The food is suitable for those who like it spicy but also those who like it bland :-) Sichuan is one of my favourite styles of cuisines of all time and I like it spicy and hot. This place however is not so spicy and I told the owner he needs to fix it for next time ;-) it lost a star from me for flavour and heat. The popcorn chicken which is always my benchmark dish in Sichuan cuisine along with the beef braised in chili oil were ok but the chicken was not crispy enough and the beef was a bit chewy for me. The beans cooked Sichuan style was good as was the cucumber salad. The pancakes with spring onion were too oily and the tofu dish was ok. All in all the food was a bit too greasy. The dessert was also ok but nothing special. Service is slow and whilst they are very nice people we had to call out for someone every single time. I hope they lift that up a bit. All in all it was a nice meal and I would come back here again. Sichuan food is gaining popularity in Munich and I am glad we now have a choice of more than one place to go to. It's nothing like the one near our house but, it's decent food for a reasonable price.

Apparently she had heard good things about it and, being from the Szechwan province, we decided to give it a try. It has been open for about four months now. They pre ordered the hot pot for 6 (it is recommended that you preorder the day before) and, we chose one spicy and one normal hot pot. The restaurant is located in an office building and is quite big. It can seat close to 80-100 people. They have outdoor seating in the summer. The staff are very polite and prompt. As they all spoke Mandarin, our Chinese friend decided to do all the talking. You can order a hot pot for a minimum of 2 and its €39 per person. The amount of food you get is huge and you won't need starters or desert, as all of it is included. We got lots of different meats and seafood, vegetables, tofu, meatballs and so on to cook in the broth. We also received many condiments to go with the food. I of course, wanted the super spicy and one of our other friends was only glad to join me. I must admit it was not so spicy and I could have had it a lot hotter. The broth was nice but lacking a bit of seasoning. It would have been perfect with a bit more salt and a few more chillies :-)) there was a ton of food and we had no hope of finishing it. The dumplings that came as starters were pretty average and nothing special at all. All in all a good experience. I would not rush back here but if someone said "let's go for hot pot", I would definitely come back. It's an odd location but not too far from the Poccistrasse U-Bahn station. I think I prefer the flavours at the Szechwan near us that opened up recently. They do have an a la carte menu but if you don't like spicy food, you may not enjoy it as much. It is a Szechwan restaurant after all and, the Szechwan province is the culinary capital of China. Food on average, is spicier than southern China or Hong Kong.
