There's no wrong way to dress a window, as long as you start with Apollo blinds…read more As part of my mission to make over a strangely shaped bedroom, Apollo was a local stop off for ideas on making the one window into something a little more... revealing. Roman, Venetian, Vertical or more, the staff here will help match the right (mass market) blind to your room. Tailoring and installation services are available as well as aftercare once everything is in place. Unfortunately for my mission there was no perfect solution for the postage-stamp skylight I was dealing with. However the couple chatting comfortably with a saleswoman were clearly delighted with the selection for their conservatory.

Keep in the heat. Having a beam of light penetrate through my eye lids and induce momentarily blindness each AM was getting rather annoying. "We need curtains." "OK, what do we do?" "I have no idea - do I look domesticated?" "Yelp it?" "Yes, that might just work." I had no idea that curtains come in lots of different sizes, colours, shapes, fabrics and yeah. So I brought the shoddy curtains that we had been putting up with. "Oh dear." "I know, it's a nightmare in the AM." "Sure that's dress material." "That's one damn ugly dress." My spec was, cheap with blackout. The total came to €342 with a €170 deposit. 10 days to make them up as the windows that we need the curtains on a very unusually shaped and there are five of them. I happily paid but at the same time I panicked after as it seemed like a lot of money to us. So I called the Mammy. "Mam is €342 a rip off for curtains?" "Oh jaysus no! With black out and for five windows that's amazing..." She proceeded to spend 30 minutes talking to me about curtains and her curtain woes and how good curtains can change your life. Simply put - it got the Mammy stamp of approval so happy days!

When I went in they were extremely helpful and the woman I spoke to gave me a sample to take away, in exchange for a fiver that I'd get back on return, to put up against my kitchen wall to see if it worked. Later I rang to order the blind and would be told they would come twice, once to measure and once to fit. While we were measured the guy recommended a friction (with a chain) blind, I dislike these so I called in two days later to specify I wanted a pull blind with a tassel. I also gave back with the sample and agreed with the woman in that day that the balance would be charged less the five euro. A few days later they came to fit it and put it up with a chain. Thankfully they had a spare pull cord and they managed to do it properly but without the tassel I ordered. Two hours later I got a call asking for payment, I told her I would pay when the job was done but was told this wasn't good enough because the books have to "balance today". I relented but told her I wasn't happy, then I discovered they charged me the amount including the fiver. I called back to ask for a refund to my card and they refused, telling me I'd get it in cash when they returned on Tuesday at 12, I work full time and don't have the ability to wait at home for people who can't do the job properly the first time. When I told the person on the other end of the phone "I guess I don't have a choice", she replied "guess not". I definitely won't be using this crowd again. No company should ask for payment for an unfinished job and if you are going to have so many different people working for you, maybe they should tell each other things such as, what the customer wants? Just an idea.

When I went in initially, I didn't have a clue about what types of blinds I needed. I fought there was just cream and white and a couple of shapes at the bottom. When I went into the show room I was a little overwhelmed at their range of stock, but once I got talking to Helen, I was sorted. I had a picture of my sitting room and kitchen windows, but I had no measurements so she was able to help me with style, but I had to organise a call-out. She was able to sort me out with cut, colour, everything. I thought they had hired an interior designer by the time I was finished with her! Now, the shop is not that big, but there is a lot of good well laid out stock, so if the staff are busy, have a look around yourself at their catalogues and one of them will be to you quickly enough. When they deal with you personally, you will see why there is a queue in the store for the personal shopping experience! Unlike a lot of places, which sell cheap ready made blinds, Clonsilla Blinds sell tailor made, good quality blinds made to measure for your windows. It was a surprise to me that me and my neighbours houses (I live in an estate) did not have the same sized windows, but they came out to my house free of charge and measured my windows up. Between the measuring and the fitting, my blinds were sorted out in no time. You can get them even cheaper if you fit them yourself, but as I don't have a car, there was no way I could transport them. But the fitting did not cost all that much and I knew if I had an issue with how they were done, I could call up about it. If I did it myself, the onus was on me and I did not want that! Before they came out and fitted, I was given a short time window a week in advance that I would have to be waiting. None of the "I'll be there Tuesday" stuff, it was "We will be there next Tuesday to fit between 12 and 1 if that suits you." When the lads did come out, they were lovely and chatty but still got the job done quite quickly. I'd definitely recommend these guys for your blinds. I've not had an issue with mine, but if I do, I was assured that they replace the fabric on your poles for a fraction of the price, so I think I have these blinds for the long haul.

    Baldoyle

I was just thinking about my experience with Baldoyle Auto Centre, and decided to write a review…read more I am from the USA (San Francisco) where auto repair can be rather, shall we say, predatory. Not in all cases, but in more than half, you're going to get gutted. Imagine my trepidation on moving to Ireland, buying a used VW Polo and having a loud BANG emminate from the engine compartment, followed by the smell of burning rubber. I'm in country 3 weeks. Don't know Polos ("3 cylinders? You're kidding!"), don't know ANY auto repair I can trust. Well, I had hired a carpenter who lived in Howth (near Baldoyle) all his life. He recommended Baldoyle Auto Centre. So I limped over there and threw myself on the mercy of the owner. I noticed his shop was clean and well-lighted. His workers were all very focused. No cigarettes. No shaved heads. No track suits. Hmmmm. The owner made a lot of eye contact in a way that led me to trust him. Sincerity is detectable. He said he could look at the car in a few days. He gave it a going over to make sure it was safe, then turned me loose. The problem was likely a broken spring. The car handled ok. The burning rubber smell was the serpentine belt, which had been crudely manhandled onto the car by a previous mechanic, damaging it. I returned in three days, the car was surrendered and I was kept abreast of the findings in the shop as work progressed. No unpleasant surprises. Broken spring. (replaced both sides at the same time. Minimal cost). Upper strut mount mangled, which caused the spring failure. Cheap fix. A bushing on the opposite side of the car required replacement. OK. Do it. And throw in a set of hubcaps because on Ireland's narrow roads, I had beaten the set on the car up pretty badly. Total cost: 400 euro. The car drives like new and the hubcaps helped with the cosmetics. Further, I was told that all the things that likely go wrong with Polos had now been fixed on this car, giving me peace of mind for the foreseeable future. It is so difficult to find trustworthy auto repair facilities, so when you find one, you want to share it with your friends, and that's what I'm doing here and on the streets. I later became aware of the amazing story of how Baldoyle Auto Centre came into being, but that's another subject. You can trust these people implicitly. What's THAT worth to you?
