**BEWARE** Get all work quotes IN WRITING with copies! I had two tradesmen out over many weeks on a big reno project and much of the work was serviceable, some of it was even quite affordable (when done "semi off the books"); most of the plumbing was quite expensive but just at the upper reaches of reasonable. At the very end I explained I had exhausted my reno budget and would finish the work myself but the plumber convinced me to allow him to install a double sink vanity. Unfortunately I had become complacent and took him at his word for the verbal quote. Well of course he charged me more than DOUBLE that quote, and had my wife sign the paperwork while I was gone so he could leave with a signature and seal the deal. When I called to complain to the owner he of course sided with his employee (and himself) and charged me an absolutely astronomical price, citing the fact that he had an approval form with a signature. The plumber had even told me earlier in the renovation project that he was "giving me a great deal" and that his main business is "little old ladies with money that don't care about the price". Background: I am disabled and have absolutely no home maintenance skills myself, so I have to trust that people won't rip me off. HC was recommended by my dad, who had used them in the past. My bathroom sink was draining very slowly, so I had HC come out. The worker was only supposed to give me a quote, but I ended up signing off on the repairs - again, I know my ignorance played a large part in how this all went down. He worked for maybe 25 - 30 minutes and it cost me $400. (So that's like $800/hr.) There was nothing special that he did, he just put a snake down the drain and cleaned the P-trap. Everyone I checked with after said I got ripped off. The company offered $100 off my next service, but I will never use them again. Had a problem with my bathroom faucet, so I called them, as I had a very good experience with Orville, their Handyman - very honest person and did a great job. But this time, with Robert the Plumber, what a disappointment. He told me he didn't know how long the job would take and he charged me $220 + GST. He knew very well it would only take him 20 minutes, but pretended to not know. He didn't charge me for the $1 part he included - as he told me it was worth $1. "How generous." It took him 20 minutes to fix the problem, and he knew that. He kept talking and talking, with his hands as well, to make the job last longer. But it took no more than 20 minutes. We had contacted Handyman Connection to have an electrician come and provide services on a number of projects in our house and garage. The tradesperson did not show up for the first appointment to do the estimate. I rescheduled the appointment to the next week after talking to the Handyman Connection contact. The following week the tradesperson came out and provided an estimate for some of the work and offered to do other work "off the books". The estimate was reviewed and approved by the Handyman Connection office and a date and time to start the work was set. The tradesperson was supposed to start at 9;00am on Friday but did not show up and did not answer calls to his cell phone. When we called the office they said he should be at our home ready to work. I explained that he wasn't at our house and that this seemed to be a pattern with this tradesperson and Handyman Connection. At the same time my daughter-in-law spoke to my wife and said that the Handyman Connection tradesperson they had hired also did not show up for the work they had requested. If this is an issue with the size of project or type of work I would have preferred the tradesperson say so and we just move on. We moved our work schedules around to accommodate the tradespersons schedule twice. We won't use or recommend Handyman Connection to anyone we know. read more

This company did some work for me which did not turn out great. I didn't complain because the job was for a few hundred bucks and couldn't be bothered. A few months later I received a letter from a manager there by the name of Alex. The letter stated that we did not complete an online survey and he wanted to know if the job the did was done correctly. I responded back by sending an email to this manager Alex. He replied and mentioned what the issue could be and because we were within the 1-year warranty period, that he would speak to someone in his office and then get back to me about sending someone out to take a look. Did I hear back? NOPE!! When did this email exchange take place? Try within the two first weeks of October. Hmmmm, they must still be looking for those documents. Can you believe that?? read more

Handyman Connection did some repair work for me in April and I wish I had read a few of the comments below before agreeing to the work to be done. Had I done so I would not have hired them. For 3 hours of work I was charged $694, of which $66 covered parts, the rest was labour + WCB, tax, etc. This translated into $190 an hour for very simple and basic drywalling, the removal and reattachment of two exterior siding panels and adding a bit of silicon to the cement to prevent future water seepage. When I raised my concerns with Alex on what I felt were unfair labour charges, I was told that the labour price comes out of a Customer Relationship Management System (CRMS), it's based on the project and not the actual hours it may require and the amount of planning that the repairman needs to do before starting the work. No other information was shared as to what goes into the CRMS calculation. Given how basic my work was, I doubt the person who had 25+ years of experience who did the work spent more than 5 minutes in planning. I've chalked this up to a great and very expensive learning experience and wanted to share to make you aware so you can make an informed decision and hopefully not follow in my footsteps. I feel there are many more cost effective options out there than Handyman Connection, companies and independent contractors that reputable, do quality work and are competitive in setting their rates based on the going market rate. read more

I have used these guys multiple times. My quotes are always provided up front and not once has the final total been different than quoted. I had one toilet replaced and the guy even went to the store to buy the toilet for me. Anyone complaining they were over priced obviously didn't read the quote. I found their prices quite reasonable and would use them again and again. read more

Beware of their tactics. They send a handyman to assess the situation and provide a lump-sum quote for the work. As per their rules, all their work is based on lump sum, not hourly rates, and once the quote is accepted by the client it is binding. However, a few weeks later and prior to performing the work, they will ask to send another handyman to re-assess the situation, and then will tell you that they cannot finish the job at the quoted price and will tell you that they have to increase the quoted amount. read more

This was absolutely unbelievably expensive. The handyman charged me at a rate, conservatively, of over $100 hour. Wasn't even a tradesmen. They even put a charge for workers compensation on the bill. $1000 for a little bit of grout work and some miscellaneous labour. read more

The people working here are good, they know their stuff. Experts in all trades and the receptionist is very polite and professional. But their prices are about double what they should be. You can tell that the Handyman Connection company takes half of the amount of money for doing essentially nothing. Workers are honest but expect to pay double what you really should be paying for the work that you get done. read more

The "credit" I was offered does not cover the costs of what I was overcharged. Nor, do I anticipate any other work required in my home in the near future. The manager's idea of resolving the issue was to agree to disagree. No explanation, other than their contractor is apparently extraordinarily efficient, was given to the high price. If I hadn't been in an emergency situation I would definately have gone elsewhere. I have no respect for contractors who take advantage of a customer's misfortune. Agree with the reviews. Nice fellow but at the end of the day I was paying for a chatty Kathy and ended up with a extra hr tacked on for it.

In this day and age, you cannot operate like the proverbial rip-off corner gas station who rips off a customer only the first time! Price matters more than anything nowadays. Exorbitant prices will help get the word around to avoid such greedy outfits. Competition will weed them out. Won't be using them ever again. read more

The work itself was completed by the craftsman in a very professional manor, handyman was on time and the workmanship is well done. The issue was with the price. Work was estimated to take 12 hours to complete, but ended up taking 5 as once the handyman started the work he realized it wasn't as bad as he thought. Was still billed the full amount, company was unwilling to lower the amount so I effectively paid over $200/h for the work. read more

After deciding to get the "professionals" in to do a very simple wiring job, the first part went very smoothly. An appointment was set with a Jacob M who I was assured was the best. After trying to reschedule his appointment for the third time with B.S. excuses, I cancelled totally. I too have to organize my days around this appointment which I have to say I thought was over priced. If you don't want the job then DON'T TAKE IT!!!.Due to this I will be looking for another tradesman and would recommend you do too. read more

We had Steve in to prep our floor for tiling and to replace a water damaged sub-floor, as this was beyond our knowledge. Steve was very professional, knowledgeable, and did a fantastic job! I had called handyman for several jobs that I wanted done? They had called me to arrange everyone to come on same day as I have a crazy work schedual . Even though these appointments were pre booked they cancelled one as the trade had to go to a bigger job. Not cool at all!!! The plumber got tied up so it ended up that both plumber and electricIan came at same time. Duanne Askew the electrician was terrific and finished the job off with a fair price as the lights I picked were not the easiest to install. Plumber was fine but could not give me a quote as the sink I had chosen was not the right size. Said to just call him when I got correct one and he would give me a quote. Since then haven't heard from him at all even though I have left several messages. For me the expierence has been less than satisfactory and I think they only want to do large projects even though their advertising implies that small jobs are top of mind. Will not use again.
