We love The Village Academy of San Diego!…read more If you are looking to break away from the traditional, limited education model offered by public and private schools, but are not quite ready for full time homeschooling, The Village Academy is a fantastic choice! I appreciate the peaceful, calm learning environment; the multi-age classrooms that allow for customizing the learning level to my child's needs and that allows kids of different ages to interact; and that my wishes are honored (i.e. I want my kiddo to have time daily to practice cursive).

I am so glad I found the Village Academy for my daughter!…read more We took her out of the local public school last year because it was not a good fit for her, she cried nearly every day because it was too overwhelming and she was struggling. At the Village Academy she is thriving in the smaller intimate mixed-aged classrooms. Because of the small class size and individualized learning plan she is noticed, encouraged (and loved!) and the teachers understand her learning style and keeping track of her progress. There is close communication with the parents and our input is valued. Fridays are called adventure Fridays at the Village Academy. She has done so many fun and educational things on those days: Museums, tide pools, parks, a farm and much more.... learning doesn't just happen in the classroom! Nature and in-person experiences make learning come alive, the school is small enough to be able to facilitate many hands on activities both at the school and outside. I am thankful I get to take her to a place every day where she is challenged, feels known and is thriving.

I am sharing my personal experience because I believe other parents deserve to ask detailed questions before enrolling their children. During our time at the school, my child came home with bruises on his body. I repeatedly asked staff what had happened, but I was unable to get an explanation that addressed my concerns. I am not claiming to know how the injuries occurred; I am sharing that I could not get the information I needed as a parent. I requested an IEP meeting because I wanted my child to have increased access to general education with appropriate aide support. Although the meeting took place, I was not provided with the data or information I requested to understand the basis for the decision. My request was simply denied. I also clearly requested that a female aide assist my child with toileting. Without prior notice, a male aide was assigned instead. I only learned this when I spoke with the principal, who told me it no longer mattered because there were only a few weeks left in the school year. I found that response extremely concerning. On another occasion, I picked up my child unexpectedly and found him outside wearing a sweater despite temperatures being around 80 degrees. When he saw me, he immediately asked for "water." His water bottle consistently came home full, which caused me concern about whether he was being offered enough water during the school day. I also found communication with the classroom teacher difficult. Based on my personal interactions, I experienced the communication as passive-aggressive and, at times, unprofessional when I advocated for my child. Ultimately, I decided withdrawing my child was the best decision for our family. I am not suggesting every family will have the same experience, but based on mine, I strongly encourage parents of children receiving special education services to ask detailed questions about IEP decision-making, aide assignments, supervision, communication, hydration, and how concerns are documented and addressed. This experience was extremely difficult for our family and left me with serious concerns about the level of communication and support we received.

The first day I thought it would be easy to just stop in front of the building as my cousin told me, let him jump into the car and it would be done, but NO, it was designed as one way in and one way out. I could not turn back and got stuck in the parking lot because everyone trying to get out at the same time. His house was about 15 minutes away, but by the time we got out of the parking and hit the road, we already hit the 4 o'clock traffic, it was just terrible. People picking up their kids from this school didn't have any courtesy on driving, there's 2 lines of cars getting out of the parking lot, and they just drove from all different directions and tried to cut in front of the main line, created that traffic since they kept trying to squeeze in the middle. Sigh The second day, I learned my lesson, I parked up the hill and told my cousin to walk up the staircase. We got back home at 3:45 before everybody else still running around. So just a little suggestion for the school in the future, maybe expand the parking structure, redesign it, have someone to direct traffic when school is out, or maybe put some signs and cones out just like Costco gas station, that might works.
