I'm writing a review now because one person gave a 1-star review with anger over the library's mask policy in 2021 (please note that they followed the Maine CDC's guidelines for masking all throughout Covid, which I greatly appreciated; notably there is no mask policy now). This skewed the average star rating greatly in a negative direction, so I wanted to do something to skew it back up where it belongs. Ellsworth's librarians sincerely care about their patrons, and it shows.

Ellsworth is in a unique spot -- they call it the "crossroads" and that's for good reason. It's…read morethe hub in between Bangor, Downeast Maine, Belfast, and Bar Harbor. If you're coming from one of those directions, chances are you'll pass through on your way to one of the others. The downtown area is cute if a bit touristy. There are a ton of great shops to browse, some good restaurants, and some interesting bars. Further uptown, there are larger shopping centers and a kind of crappy little mall. But the town is quite bustling, especially in the summer, so there's always something interesting to see. Traffic can be a supreme clusterfuck during peak tourist season so it's beneficial to learn the side roads if you want to get around it all.

Get that permit before you burn or there could be a $500 penalty. The people working here are always helpful and friendly. The hours are a little quirky but for a rural small town office, they get the job done.

6 years ago when I bought my house the women at the town office were very helpful and nice. Those…read morewomen I had met are no longer there. I understand the difficulty of getting good help, of replacing people who had been in the job awhile, etc but the past (at least) two years are a nightmare! Hours changing all the time, no one answering the phone and no voicemail during posted office hours (just happened again tonight), no one available to talk to regarding a tax question. This past year (June I think) I got a notice of delinquency from my mortgage company. I had paid my taxes in Oct! it took 2 weeks to catch them in. I got a quick response: "we have a new tax collector (we don't) and she had calculated some peoples' taxes wrong but we don't send notices". This was not true- after a time I found out I had added wrong and was short $10. on those taxes. They don't send notices............ I said, "since it was an honest mistake, how would I have known?" and they added finance charges! This is run so poorly; we have no mayor but we have a few "selectmen" who apparently run things. So who is responsible for the town office? and why aren't the selectmen making sure things are done correctly and the office is "manned", especially at the posted hours which are very limited as it is!

I find it's easy to pick up a conversation while you wait with others in line, and they are efficient. Two new guys in training, but they too have the right groove. If you need to mail something, it's worth a stop!

This town pronounced "ma CHAI us" not "ma KAI us" is the county seat for Washington County and the…read moresecond largest town in the county. There are no 3-color traffic signals, just a couple of flashing yellows. There are a number of cute shops to visit with a walkable downtown.
