I was wheeling on Main Street when Beech Grove Clay Works caught my eye. This is a storefront directly on Main Street. As you might guess, it's a ceramics studio. It's an adult community ceramics studio where members enjoy access to "instructional classes at all experience levels." They have as much as 40+ hours of open studio time a week - however, it's worth noting they do not offer walk-in classes or studio time. All classes are scheduled in advance, and only paid members can participate in the open studio times. There's a front gallery space, my primary interest today, where you can buy local and support indie artists. I saw everything from refrigerator magnets to kitchen wares to decor to quite a bit more. It was really quite impressive. The class and studio area is visible from the gallery, and it's also a quite impressive space. The front entryway is accessible, not always true in Beech Grove, and I was acknowledged when I entered. I believe the owner was in conversation with someone - perhaps a potential member or someone for an event - and I waited patiently for my turn while checking out the gallery. I stuck around 15-20 minutes. My turn never came. I'd grown interested in a couple items, however, I had some questions (including price, as these items were out of my reach). After waiting what felt like a reasonable time, I finally left without further acknowledgement and without a purchase. Buying local is wonderful, but that doesn't negate the requirement that you actually serve the customer. I'm actually pretty low maintenance, but if I'm not served I don't buy. Pretty simple. So, cool shop. Cool gallery. Great concept. Needs some work in the area of customer service. I may or may not be back.

The tender there was very courteous and offered samples and even suggested a really good mixture of their beers. For the actual event, it's pretty low-key and casual. You walk in and make sure you find whoever is hosting it so you can check in. Then you find the class that you want and sit there. Whomever is leading the event will walk you through every step of the way and answer any questions you have. The only thing that I felt was a little bit misleading about this event was that you pay for admission and then you also have to pay for a supplies fee on top of that. I feel like it would just be so much easier if you just clumped it all into one free.

I like the variety of their pictures as well as the location of their events. They travel to various restaurants to use as venues. Two of my visits have been to the Hard Rock Cafe downtown Indianapolis and one to the Spaghetti Factory since that is fairly close to my home. The restaurant staff tends to be very friendly and you get your choice of the entire menu and bar. So lots of variety, a big plus... but you also need to tip, a little downside... well I do tend to spend way too much on food and drink always... Generally the event is set up in a smaller private room, this way we can paint and follow the instructor without the usual restaurant/bar noises, which is a good thing. The instructors/artists tend to be funny or at least try... there are just so many jokes you can make and so if you go more often, you'll hear the same jokes again. They also try to entertain you with silly games while you wait for your paint to dry, because we all know, just watching the paint dry is not a highly rated activity. So far they have always been helpful if you need more paint, towels, help with the picture, repeat instructions cause you were running your mouth and not paying attention... And let's just mention that you really truly do NOT need any talent in order to paint a picture once the artists break it down for you into little easy to follow steps. And generally there are some discount codes flying around, I found a Groupon for my session and you can win a free event sometimes, and generally they give you a discount code to use for your next event.. that's how they keep you coming back ... a fun experience, a cool picture to brag with and a discount code...

For $60 four of us ( great idea for double date night ) were taught to paint over the course of two hours. All paint, canvases, smocks, and cleaning supplies were included. And the best part is they encourage you to BYOB! We brought a cooler full of craft beer and a bottle of wine and it was awesome to relax and drink and be creative with friends. The teacher was fun and patient and we loved our final result. ( check out purple and maroon painting pics above ) We have the paintings hung in our living room as a reminder of that night. Good times!! I wish there was another locations closer than Fortville, other than that no complaints at all.

His enjoyment level is entirely dependent on the instructor which varies widely. Even when we start the program sometimes the teacher changes .. to someone less qualified (at least in our experience). The class seems to build on the topic so by the end of the week th there is a contest or a way to show off the final product which makes it fun for the kid. They get to go through all the stages from concept to design to development to using the final product.
