So…read morewhen I had to get an endoscopy and colonoscopy, I felt like I was going to be in good hands. When we arrived, the door said to call the office and someone would meet you to ask some questions and take your temperature. The nurse was friendly and just asked some screening questions for COVID-19 precautions. (Note: You do have to get a negative COVID-19 test before coming). I signed some papers and gave him my paperwork (my doctor gave it to me ahead of time). He lead me inside and I sat until my appointment time. The waiting room was socially distanced, had wifi, and good AC. I was asked to verify my name and birthdate on my bracelet and then was escorted back to my bed. I don't remember the nurse's name for this part, but she took my vitals and put my IV in. Unfortunately, I've been hospitalized multiple times so I was used to this part. We talked lightly about her kids and my job until the anesthesiologist came. I was extremely nervous, to say the least. Dr. Bielamowicz ("Dr. B.") was a wonderful person and made me feel that everything was going to be okay. We also celebrated that I was getting my second vaccine dose and talked about our lives. I had a million worries and questions and she calmed me down. I am so grateful I had her on my team. When it was time to get rolled in for the procedures, Erica came and helped. She was really kind as well. We all gabbed together about nails. Dr. Han Ton-That was my GI doc doing the procedure. He is also amazing and likes to joke around with you to get you to laugh. When I had to put the mouth guard in for the endoscopy, all my worries came back and I started crying. Erica and Dr. B soothed me into my sleep very quickly and said everything was going to be okay. All I remember is waking up with my glasses on (I don't remember putting them on LOL), with a snack and water on my lap. My GI doc had all my papers ready to go and shared my results (I signed them ahead of time). I don't recall my post-op nurse's name, but she was patient when I was getting my bearings and asked if I wanted more snacks. She gave me a chair to sit in to put my clothes on too and walked me to the waiting room to be discharged. I don't know why this place has such bad reviews. They made it as pleasant as they can and make you feel that you are going to be okay. Don't go anywhere else for these procedures! This place is the best.

During the past thirty years Dr. Manalo has performed three colonoscopies, two sigmoidoscopies and two endoscopies on me. In each case my recovery was outstanding and I did not experience any problems. I have felt fully confident in his diagnosis which has led me back to him each time. He is a calm professional who treats his patients with the utmost respect and does not skip around the facts. He will explain in clear terms any condition he may find and provides solid recommendations for possible treatments. He does not push his patients into making decisions and ensures that they fully understand the pros and cons of how symptoms could and should be treated. During his time as my family's general medicine practitioner his diagnosis of any problems we had, his recommendations for treatment and his treatments were all spot on. On one occasion a pulmonologist recommended a treatment when a small spot was discovered on my lung during an x-ray taken during a military reserve exam. I consulted Dr. Manalo and he explained that the recommended treatment would definitely remove any problem with my lungs but that the medications recommended would probably destroy my liver and kidneys.

Really really disappointed in INOVA Gastroenterology. My primary care physician referred me and…read morewhen I called to make an appointment (which was a feat in itself, having to leave a call back number multiple times in order to make an appointment), the scheduler said based on my orders it was urgent and that they'd want me in as soon as possible. She put in a note in the system (to check availability I assume?) on a Thursday and told me if someone hadn't contacted me by Monday to make an appointment, to call back. No one ever called, so I called a week later (today), and was told that they were instructed to schedule me 6-8 weeks out. When I asked about the urgency the original scheduler had referred to, the woman I spoke to today just said, "Well, the nurse reviewed your file and we don't have anything for 6 weeks." Needless to say, I'll be scheduling elsewhere. The fact that one person can cause such worry with the supposed urgency of a situation, while another is so unhelpful and shows such a lack of care is astounding. Not to mention, where was the call they were supposed to give me to schedule/inform me that they decided my situation wasn't urgent? I'm so grossed out by this place.

I connected those ideas with hospitals because hospitals have to keep going through challenging situations, day and night, while teams work together to care for patients and help them recover as much as possible. ‍ And Inova Fairfax is especially meaningful to me because it is Inova's flagship medical center. It is also home to Northern Virginia's only Level I Trauma Center, where trauma teams are available around the clock for life-threatening injuries. ‍ I personally think of Inova Fairfax as "the greatest" because of how special and amazing this hospital feels to me. It has so many medical teams, specialties, services, and people working together toward the same goal of helping patients. But this vibe video is about more than just the hospital itself. It is also about overcoming difficult challenges. Hospitals see some incredibly challenging situations which patients and families may not know what is going to happen next. Healthcare teams cannot make every difficult situation disappear, but they can keep working, caring, treating, researching, communicating, and supporting patients through those challenges. ‍‍‍ To me, stamina means having the strength to keep going even when something is difficult. It means facing a challenge, taking things one step at a time, learning from what happens, and continuing to work toward something better. That's also why I wanted to dance it out! I wanted my dancing to capture that feeling of being thrilled when a difficult challenge starts getting better, that moment when something that once seemed overwhelming becomes more hopeful. When our daughter dislocated her shoulder after falling down the steps while taking her dog out for…read morea walk, we experienced one of the most frightening days our family has ever faced. She was first taken to another hospital, where the plan was to put her under anesthesia to reset her shoulder. Because she had a life-threatening reaction to anesthesia about 10 years ago, when she flatlined during surgery, we were extremely hesitant. Combined with the circumstances there, we decided to take her to Fairfax Hospital. That decision led us to Dr. Titus Park and his incredible team, and we are so thankful it did. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Park had a clear plan that did not involve anesthesia. He immediately put our entire family at ease with his calm confidence, compassion, and professionalism. My daughter was in excruciating pain--a true 10 out of 10. She asked one of the nurses if she would pray with her, and without hesitation, she kindly did. That simple act of kindness meant more than words can express. When Dr. Park successfully put her shoulder back into place, the relief was immediate. My daughter looked him in the eyes and said, "I could just kiss you!" It was such a heartfelt expression of gratitude because her pain was instantly gone. What also stood out was Dr. Park's wonderful bedside manner. Even in the middle of a stressful situation, he found a way to make us smile. He asked my two daughters, now both in their late 30s, which one was my favorite and which one had been the cutest baby. They both immediately raised their hands and looked at me, and I just turned my head. We all burst into laughter. It was exactly the kind of lighthearted moment our family needed. Dr. Park and his entire team turned an unbearable situation into a bearable one through their exceptional medical care, kindness, compassion, and genuine concern for both their patient and her family. Decades of loyal patronage ruined by non-existent customer service and scheduling gridlock…read more I have relied on Inova Health System for medical needs for many years, but the severe decline in their administrative operations, responsiveness, and overall care, over the last couple of years has finally pushed me find better alternatives. While some the clinical doctors remain okay, trying to actually see one or communicate with their office has become an agonizing, exhausting chore. A healthcare provider is only as good as your ability to actually access it, and Inova is, I believe, fundamentally broken. After years of loyalty, I will no longer be using Inova facilities. If you want to find institutions that respects its patients' time and communication, I'd suggest Medstar or VHC Health.
