My sister and I own a house together in Traverse City. I live in Denver and she lives here in TC. The last time I was here was at the beginning of October when we had Hammond Tree Service out for an estimate. We both felt the price was reasonable and we decided to move forward with their services. I am back in TC visiting my sister and when I arrived to our house, I was completely blown away at the amount of work that was done and how great the outer area of the house looked after they had been here (last November). I still can't get over how much they did to improve our property for the the amount of money they charged. We had a sad looking Colorado Blue Spruce on our new property. Its best years were behind it, I'm sure, and it needed to go. We called several companies for an estimate of cost and time frame. Some gave ridiculous quotes, another didn't even come out until a week after the tree was gone. I've had the best experiences when the actual owner of a company takes the time to come out and talk to me himself. And that's what Keith Hammond did. No sales reps or gimmicks, just the expert himself who puts his own name on his business. That really impressed me. Keith came out the day after I called him, looked at my tree, gave me a very reasonable quote, and a quick time frame. Later that same week, his crew came out with all their equipment and had that old tree gone in no time! The tree was in a tight corner of my yard with fences on two sides and a shed on a third. It's quite amazing to watch skilled professionals do their magic. Every piece fell exactly where they wanted it to. Afterwards, they cleaned everything up real nice. Keith and his crew spent a day at my house helping me with large downed trees that were the result of several wind storms and numerous dead trees just waiting to come down. Keith, a certified arborist, identified trees that were destined to become problems in the future. They spent another day at a relative's house cleaning up an overgrown yard around the house and a deep back yard with two huge brush piles and many more downed trees. At both sites I was amazed at how much they were able to accomplish in a single day. They are all exceptionally knowledgeable, professional, hard working and nice. I researched three company's and went with Hammond Tree Service. One reason was good reviews and the other was price. I did ask Keith to come see the two trees due to their proximity to my house and beloved koi ponds. He stated photos would be sufficient. In hindsight I wish I had insisted he come out. Upon arrival the first issue was the job would take two days. I stated I had the text staying "doable in one day" Keith said I miss understood and no way this job was one day. I again concede Because other quotes were two days as they came to see the site. I restated that my pond was a big deal and needed great care. I had moved the koi to the lower pond figuring less stress for them further from the worksite. Day one went fine and I was able to remove sawdust from the pond at the end of the day with no problem. I did loss some plants on the path the ditch witch used. Again wish I had moved them before the machine ran over them but I did not foresee this nor was it discussed. Again my fault. Day two was where things went south. I was not prepared for the amount of sawdust that entered my pond. As the trunks came down the pond was inundated with sawdust and floating oil. Near the end of the job a rope used on the zipline broke and a huge heavy trunk landed on my waterfall and rolled into the pond. I was in shock and hurried to extract my koi. One of the employees helped and we got most out. Keith stated it was a new rope, like that was my concern, at this point I mentioned the spout on my pump was broke and some koi were still in there. Keith googled and said take off 90 dollars. third mistake on my part was I paid balance of 4910 dollar at the end of the day but mentioned I had concerns about my pond and fish issues. Plus I was not aware of the massive mess I would need to clean. That night I could no sleep I was stressed as I could not find all the koi and the size of my mess and how to get out the sawdust. I then at 3:00 a.m. stopped payment on my check. Keith very quickly text a long reply "You were changed for two days of tree removal. Your pond was around the tree being removed 330 degrees and saw dust is unavoidable when removals your Hazardous trees. Stopping payment is unexceptional. ". With videos but not of the dropped trunk. I stated a tarp might have helped. In conclusion after several days of unpleasant texts I gave up and paid what he demanded as fair and of his threaten to put a lean on my house and take me to court. All I ask for was three hundred off to assist with clean up, loss of three koi and Some minor stone work repair. I cleaned the 7000 gallon pond and the ponds almost was back to normal. It took me four long days of draining and vacuuming. However the treatment I personal received has left me sad and feeling mistreated. This all could have been avoided with a plan to best protect my pond. It was never discussed. I thought he had that as part of residential work. I hope Keith learns to slow down and listen, plan more and visit the property before work. I hope others learn from my experience. Hammond Tree Service gave us great service. They arrived at the time they said they would and they AND MY TREE were gone by lunch time! They did a great job, left the property looking better than they found it. One of the branches of the tree in question was reaching out over my neighbors fence and roof and they were able to get it down without disturbing either. I would recommend this company to anyone who has problem trees growing in places they shouldn't be growing. Good job guys!!! read more
